It's unfortunate that modularity didn't gain the traction it needed. It's a great concept that is pro-consumer. Maybe we'll just have to wait a little longer

DeuxVendredi the G5 had build issues, it didn't feel like a premium device and didn't look like one either. I think that's why it failed. The fact that many of the modules aka friends were region specific didn't help its cause either

Motorola did it the right way. Not the most popular brand but the mods for the Moto Z line are very useful and seem to be selling well.

I really hope that cellphones can someday reach the modularity levels of the PC. We'll be able to pick and purchase components separately, pick our own casing, and customize it any way we want. It would be so sick, very pro-consumer indeed

Honestly the modular design was super attractive to myself as a cell phone repair technician, although I know that's a niche market. The LG G5 is the easiest to repair smartphone! And the removable battery is a huge selling point with older customers looking for a large-screened smart phone who used to carry around spare S4 and S5 batteries around with them.

I got a G6 last week (silver version,) and it's my first (pure) LG phone. I've had a couple of Nexus' in the past, Note5, some HTC etc, and compared to all those I'm loving this thing. The cameras aren't amazing like the latest Samsungs/Pixel, but they work great for most people and are FUN to use. (That wide lens is really a big deal. I've been using it more often than the normal camera.) I also appreciate the lesser amount of bloatware LG puts on their phones (that is uninstallable even!) compared to Samsung, who CRAMS their phones and you can only disable, not install apps. I'm completely sold on the 2:1 aspect ratio for being easy to hold while giving loads of real estate, and it hasn't proven to be an issue for any app I've opened with it yet. The 2x 1:1 app multitasking is great since you can use two apps in either portrait or landscape orientation without changing their size. I'm getting excellent battery life, too (usually 2 days between charging.) And after having the Nexus 6 and the Note5, I can't tell you how amazing it feels to have a phone that comes in a significantly smaller size without sacrificing screen.
@JanTuts
@JanTuts 7 жыл бұрын
2:1 aspect ratio lends itself perfectly to mobile VR. It's way easier to design VR hardware and middleware when using two perfectly square areas. No hassle with image warping or cropping off perfectly useable screen space. :)

yep but the g6 won't support daydream apparently because the screen is not oled .....so just the cpardboard vr apps.....but it would be suitable res ......I think all of the 5 upcoming microsoft holographic headsets by their partners will have 1440by 1440 per eye ....which is better than the rift and vive

Really though? With batteries easily lasting a full day, even under heavy use? Why would you want to have to remove the back, replace the battery and the back again. Especially now that quick charge is an option depending on the phone.

God I love youtube, nice to have a reasonable discussion. All good points my man, something I didnt really consider as in 15 years of owning phones Ive never had a battery go bad. Always seem to upgrade before it happens I guess. Maybe leave out the insult though, it always helps during adult conversations I find.

I don't think people realize that we want something different than what other phones offer. This is as generic as could be. I love my G5 and chose it because I can swap things out and get multiple batteries (important when on the go). I switched out of Samsung because they changed things up for the worse. the G6, the galaxy 7 (and 8) and pixel are virtually one of the same. Just shuffle up a few display and performance differences and they're all the same. Boring.
@JD2jr.
@JD2jr. 7 жыл бұрын
Right? I'm stuck with the galaxy line because their active line is the only one that offers physical buttons anymore. A screen is a screen and If I want to watch content I have a computer or a tablet. I know I'm probably a minority, but it seems like batteries and sd card slots are so simple to make swappable, it's like a free feature to claim for your phone. it baffles me why all these phones keep removing the simplest features and just copy each other.

Not quite sure I'd go for LG's phones anymore, my G4 is amazing and hasn't bootlooped yet but LG's actions (or lack thereof) on the bootloop issue is discouraging. Non-removable battery for some reason outweighs the really nice bezels and other features for me. For that price I'd want something that has essentially all of the features I'd prefer, or I'd spend that money on a phone made by a company that cares, like the One's. But that's just me talking out of my end, great review, well-written and I can appreciate the work. Also Tested, I think maybe the camera could focus a little better on the screen around 8:00 though I'm not sure how the camera deals with the lighting in that situation, it just looks slightly fuzzier than the other clips of the screen, or maybe it was the content on the screen that wasn't great.
@Raydiayt

thechosendude Yeah, as dumb as it sounds. All I hear about LG's support is negative, and though it's only one experience, my brother has been using his One2 and says their support has been amazing. If I don't get everything I love in a phone, I'll choose the one with the happiest customers. I'm not getting a new phone anytime soon though so that's just my plans

I have a G4. I did have boot loop repair done 10 months after I bought the phone, annoying but no big deal, service was great and got my phone back in 6 days. I still can't see myself upgrading. I've tried numerous phones and something about the G4 I like best. I love the camera, I've taken amazing shots of the stars and milky way at night, the curve is wonderful, the leather back is holding up strong. I don't even use a case, it fits so snuggly in to my pocket. Like the curve was made for my thigh. I also enjoy turning off TV's at bars during sporting events. Keep your G4's, if phones ever become a collectible, that is the one! :P

I currently use a Galaxy A7 as it has twin SIM card which is perfect for work and personal use - however the second SIM slot is also the one for the extended memory and is not 4G only 2G - is there any chance you could do a review on TRUE twin SIM 4G phones available on the market?

Really hoping HTC or Google can get it with the HTC 11/Ocean and Pixel 2. Hoping we get a sort of blend of the S8 and the G6... Thin, but present bezels (Not a fan of the Edge), dual (each being great) cameras, IP68, AMOLED, and hoping for stereo speakers. And a decent finger print sensor placement. Come on Samsung.

I feel the same way with buttons. I have to go with the galaxy because the active line is the only phone I know that still has actual buttons... Most phones are even getting rid of the home button too, and it's infuriating.
@alexfiftyem
@alexfiftyem 7 жыл бұрын
About the home button, I used to think like you too, that the lack of it was a step back. I got a OP2 and the home "sensor" felt weird for like the first day and then that's it, it turns out it's not that bad actually and you get used to it pretty quickly. At least in my experience.
@JD2jr.
@JD2jr. 7 жыл бұрын
I had a galaxy s3, I think, and it had capacitive buttons for back and menu. I "got used to" them, sure, but they never worked right. Especially if you get your phone wet, it's obnoxious. I switched to the active line when they introduced it because of the waterproof-ness, but I will stick with them because the buttons work right, every time. No accidental presses from pcking it up, no struggling to get presses to work... I know I'm probably this huge outlier, but it's such a massive improvement.

Camera panning on a subject who is talking to you feels bad for the watcher. With body language, when people are turning away from you, they're disinterested and want to walk off. If I'm watching someone's presentation, if I can see their eyes I'd like them to make contact with mine. Very distracting and fairly unpleasant. Panning over any other subject feels fine.

I don't like this minimum bezel trend. We need a little bit of room to hold the phone without touching the screen. And a little room for the case. And why all the hate for those black bars when watching 16x9 content? I want black bars, don't give me any of those cropping or stretching modes. I want to see the full picture, unmolested, and if the picture is narrower or wider than my screen, add black bars to fill the rest. I understand his problem with the youtube app, we don't want black bars all around, the app needs to zoom the picture so that either it's as wide as the screen or as tall as the screen. But please don't crop the top and bottom of 16x9 content! I want the full picture! BTW I have the G5, and the GPS just died... the G4 had a reboot-loop problem and now it seems like a lot of G5 have problems with the GPS antenna connectors coming loose. Anyone want to predict what will be the main problem with the new G6?

Why would you want a 2:1 screen? I'll stick to 16:9 Also sad to say that the new Android flagships, like the G6 and S8, fail to deliver any real improvement. These phones are just design changes over their previous models.

Micro SD good. Headphone good. Headphone on top, meh. USBc ...fair enough it's the new standard. But does it allow USB mass storage (something missing from most android phones I come across) ?

in not gonna buy the LG g6. I've had the g series since the g2 and I love the removable battery one the LG g5. Removing the removable battery is the worst decision they could have made. they've pushed be toward samsung with this piece of trash

I'm using this phone now over samsung s8+ which is my primary choice before and I have no regrets. I would rate this 7/10. 1) Battery life is not what I expected compared to my iPhone 6s Plus before I upgraded my phone to this (the battery of this is just enough for 1 day...U dont get any extra Juice) 2) Image quality is not that great not bad either it just in between. I use snapseed just to edit my photos anyway 3)Lg's UI is lack of imagination. ITS UGLY and the designer of this has no taste at all. (LOL) But. Ill be honest i like this phone and the only makes me sad is that titanium colour is not available here in Australia, Im using black but i just ignore the fact that im using this color hehe
