He plays the character so perfectly. The "You're not that guy . . . you're not that guy . . . . I am that guy" scene is one of my favorite examples. A friend told me to rewatch that scene with the sound off and watch his facial expressions. When he steps in to stop Prax from shooting Strickland, Amos is nothing but compassion and almost a little afraid of what will happen to Prax if he can't talk him out of shooting the doctor because he knows what it will do to Prax. Then, once he has guided Prax back through the airlock door and away from the darker path, he turns around and there is nothing but the stone killer that is down inside of Amos and there is no doubt that he was never going to save Strickland's life, just the soul of his friend. Honestly, I find Amos's moral choices to be the most interesting because of how damaged and complicated his moral compass is, compared to most of the cast.

I totally agree ! You have to pay close attention to his facial expressions, that are very subtle, his eyes are very expressive, like in the scene where Prax finally finds his daughter and introduces Amos as his best friend. The look on Amos's face is precious, it's like he had never been introduced as a best friend before in his life. If you blink, you would miss his facial expression which speaks volumes. And that's only one quick scene.

Exactly. That’s why The Expanse is thus far the closest thing to Game of Thrones(excluding final season) since Game of Thrones when it comes to character development and telling a big story on a massive canvas. The thing I most appreciated about GOT was the ability to develop characters in ways that completely change the viewer’s relationship with that character, all while doing this without it seeming forced or unrealistic(again, excluding final season). Think about the development of Jaime Lannister, The Hound, or Sansa, the development of these characters among others is what really made that series tick, it’s why the hurried finish of the last season fell flat. I see similar long character development in characters on The Expanse like Amos, Bobby, and Avasarala.

So, Duarte is like the anti-Holden. Who is the anti-Amos? Cortazar? I think that Amos is meant to be a cautionary tale more than an inspirational or idealized figure. Due to his traumatic upbringing, he does not have the ability to process social or moral cues, and instead relies on Naomi and Holden to do that for him. We as the readers and audience are very lucky that Amos found such principled characters to follow, but he would have become a total monster if he had, for instance, come under the sway of villains like Jules-Pierre, Strickland, or Duarte. The cautionary tale is that far too many people today are in a similar boat and offload their moral and ethical processing to charismatic figures, many of which are far from paragons.

@I1like1wood1ash
@I1like1wood1ash 11 ай бұрын
Sorry for the text wall, I'm very sleep deprived and passionate about this subject. There are actually a lot of cheap repainted objects on The Expanse, afaik they didn't have much of a prop budget in season 1 and 2 (especially after finishing the Roci's interior) and the prop department's director regularly goes thrift shopping to find things to make props out of. This channel actually has an interview with the guy, and he talks about some of the cooler, more made-from-scratch stuff here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXeZZqejrdmeq9E I have to say, the boots are a stroke of genius! I would never have thought of that solution! Anyway, repainted household objects are a staple in prop building, especially sci-fi. Nobody has the time, money and energy to make all- or even most- of the props from scratch. It's literally cheaper to repaint things, yeah, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's poorly executed. The show's first seasons are a testament to the artist's ingenuity and a prime example of "if there's a will, there's a way." My boyfriend and I spotted a repainted recycling bin, the type used in his university, being used as the main part of a turnstile. Here's a link to a subreddit dedicated to spotting everyday objects being used as props, I also went and inputted "Expanse" in the searchbar for you, so you can see a few examples right away of everyday objects either repurposed wholesale or used as parts for props: www.reddit.com/r/Thatsabooklight/search/?q=the%20expanse&restrict_sr=1 My favourites from The Expanse that I found on there have to be: 1. the camplight-tripod mining charge because of its simplicity 2. the crash couches being assembled from more junk than you can wave your fist at, because the crash couches look fantastic and I really want to see an official breakdown of how they made them. Anyway, I hope from now on you'll be a little more forgiving when you spot an everyday object used as a prop, because just about every sci-fi, no matter the budget, employs this practice. If you look up the name of your favourite sci-fi series/movies on that subreddit I linked you (r/thatsabooklight), there's a very high chance it'll bring up a whole host of results Of course, maybe I misunderstood what you meant and you didn't mean "cheap" like "thrifty" but cheap like "poorly made," in which case you might want to consider why you'd consider the two synonymous, because every prop department has a budget.

There are slight details that make a huge difference. Amos is a sociopath, not a psychopath. Both or them have antisocial behavior, but its from different causes. A psychopath is amoral. Meaning he doesnt have morals. There is no right or wrong. They can be deceitful. There is nothing wrong there to them. A sociopath is a moral being. However, his morality is different from the average. They have a concept of right and wrong, and although it may have some common ground, the differences make a huge difference. Both are casted away from society for that reason. They are socially awkward. Having said this. Amos knows perfectly that he is a sociopath. He can create some social interaction with the overlap of his moral model, but he also realizes that "you are not that guy, he is that guy". Thats why he took Naomi as his moral compass at the begging, to keep himself in check in case he had bad judgement, but then embraced the rest of the crew when he realized she isnt reliable alone, as she is able to deceit. So now the entire crew is his moral compass.

Wes Chatham's work on his Amos character has paid off HUGE. There are moments in his acting, subtle moments, that are so true to reading between the lines of the character that as a survivor of sexual abuse and bisexual, he's scarily relatable.

I love the whole crew, but yeah, Amos has a special place in my heart simply because of his backstory, what he’s been through, and how he still tries to find a person to be his conscience. He knows he’s not normal in that way. He knows he needs someone to act as a compass for him. Wes Chatham completely embodies Amos in the show. Perfect casting for the whole crew, really.

This is hands down, my favourite sci-fi, or show period. I the expansiveness, of the expanse, pardon the pun, yet it checks all the boxes for me, with so many amazing characters, regardless if they are there for one episode or more. What I really appreciate, is the amount of powerful female characters, that play crucial parts in the development of this brilliant series., Cara Gee, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Frankie Adams are my favourite characters, with Amos as a brother from another mother, that guy you want watching your back. This to me is recompense, for the atrocity of losing firefly, another brilliant series lost way before its time. Thank you, Adam, for your support of this show and to all the cast, you are what makes this show, very unique and spellbinding and now, binge-worthy, which, as I lament I've done, all gone till season five, but was worth it.

Chatham for best actor at the next awards! That wide eyed wild angry face he pulls when struck by the Corp security chief ep10s4 was some of the best acting I’ve seen in a long time! His performances thus far have, in my humble opinion, been the highlight of the show and Amos is hands down my favourite character in The Expanse to date. His performance is so convincingly believable that when I see a picture of him I don’t see Chatham, i see Amos! For the audience, believability is what makes the difference between a good show and an unequivocally brilliant piece of entertainment like The Expanse and Chatham is bringing it buy the truckload and then some.
