I’m sorry I don’t wanna drag the creativity of your channel down, and I love your ability to collaborate and make something new but like you literally could have milled some holes in a 4x4 that fits the handle of these dispensers. It accomplishes the same goal, in the sense you want to take the roll with you and be able to dispense tape one handed. I feel like it’s a little bit of over thinking to disassemble the tape dispenser when you could mill a few oblong holes in a nice piece of wood and stick the dispenser handle in them and if you want to take them with you just remove the dispenser, it also lends itself well to being built into a vertical orientation. Kind of an Occam’s razor type thing, But then you wouldn’t have a video so idk I’m sort of torn between the simple solution and the free form creative spirit you foster in this video... honestly I’m slightly envious and a little bit baffled by your ability to see another idea as a contribution to the final product and not an obstacle to your vision, your ability to design around another persons work is awe inspiring (it would definitley frustrate me to not have a plan before it’s executed...to just go and make it, I could do it alone no problem but each with a different part, the way you riff off each other it’s awesome)

What wonderful shop porn. I could (and often DO...) watch this sort of stuff non-stop. My other go-to is the wonderful How It's Made series. Unnnngggghhhh... When I used to work in my shop more often I'd spend as much or more time making the stuff to make the stuff, than making the stuff itself. A good jig or tool holder is a thing of beauty.

I know Adam won't read comments but might help others looking to do something similar. For the blade a really easy place to get them is on the glad wrap dispensers, you get a footlong blade on the side of a cheap box.

Cost money though. You can affix these blades to something to make them a bit more rigid.

The tape holder (the grey plastic thing they cut up) could easily and more cheaply be made from MDF. NM, the serrated blades from the glad / foil wrap boxes could be made stronger by gluing to the blunt side of a used craft blade. Or you could cut sections from a hacksaw blade.

You can also use hacksaw blades and cut them to length with an angle grinder if you need something a little more heavy duty

That was my only frown moment in the vid. As soon as they said they wanted something to lock the arms up I just thought of a tungsten steel flap/spring (think of a springboard a gymnast uses to leap onto/over the box) mounted to the ply backing that the top corner of the arm would depress when the arm was moved. When the arm was fully up or down the tungsten would be at max open and would hold the arm in place while the action of raising/lowering the arm would depress it. The friction part of the arm - the corner - would be lightly rounded off and shimmed or capped with something that wouldn't wear down or alternatively would promote ease of action ie solid teflon insert or a strip of thin hardened steel bent and screwed into place - use whatever is on hand but all stuff I've worked with before so know it's doable.

The tape rolls should be double mounted back to back with a single arm between them. You could fit 4 rolls in the same place.

the idea was that they wanted to take off one roll without having them stick together or needing to get one out of the way, take the one they needed, then put back the one they didn't. an easy way to have more is just to make it more compact and have more arms.

I love that the portable bandsaw was already plugged in and you didn't have to go unwrap the cord before using it. I've always wrapped it up, even though 99% of the time I use it in the exact same spot. That's fantastic.

That's a really cool build, but how about going some few steps further and have each section of the tape dispenser to have a mechanism with one push will spring and slide out and the tape arm swing out. Then remove and install the tape and release the leave spring lock and one push to lower the arm and lock the dispenser back into place. An idea perhaps?

Neat build. Things I would have done differently for me: 1 - Not used thrust bearings. None needed, you want some friction on the roll so it doesn't overpull and doesn't float when you're trying to pull a specific amount. 2 - Used spring instead of the catch lever. Just like on a kickstand. Put the top position just after 180' so the spring "locks" both up and down but still only needs one hand ever, no lever to reposition. 3 - Made it all smaller. This is the size of a toolbox and it only holds 3 rows of tape. Get rid of most of the mounting hardware, get rid of the MDF, made slip parts out of steel.

Also, why cut the tri-star (whatever that grey plastic thing is called) at the top and then sand down the egdes again instead of cutting the bottom? That'd definitely make the single units thinner.

She had the idea to have the roll on a spring to hold it up, and a catch to lock it down in the first place. I would probably have just had it swing over 180 like you say but held there by gravity. kickstand only needs a spring because it is upside down. Friction on the roll is not an issue, the friction of the tape coming off the roll actually keeps it consistent. Lower friction is good for these guys, because they use tape very quickly.

Or they could have given the thingie a small angle toward the back, so when it's up it would remain there by gravity, and would fall back into normal position very easily without having to unlock the thing.

I dont make things like this ever, but im fascinated by woodworking and everything and building in general, and these are so calming and relaxing to sit diwn to and binge a few episodes. I love the one day builds so much because it combines these buildings with the calm Adam that ive only ever seen more on here than on things like mythbusters, which was one of my favorite shows when i was a bit younger.

15:20 recently at Reddit I happened across a thread where people were arguing (still) whether Metric or Imperial is better. When I was a child, there was a mad rush for a brief time to teach us both Imperial and Metric. I was rooting for metric in junior high and high school cuz the math was easier for me to do in my head. Everything works on a factor of ten. Why would we want to use the archaic system? It seemed like by the time I grew up the USA would have gone metric along with the rest of the world. By the time I was in college that idea had totally lost any ground. Fast forward to today and we're still arguing about this. I came away from the recent reddit thread with an understanding that for some people, Imperial is preferred for emotional reasons. Metric is cold and not very sexy. There's history and meaning behind Imperial measurements and people equate memories with the terminology and how they've been used. Also, some engineers stressed how Imperial measurements are easier to factor on the fly in their heads. Ten only breaks down by a factor of five or two, but twelve can be broken down by a factor of two, three, four, and six. Then another engineer complained that when he is given a project by someone who thinks only in Imperial they end up giving him a bunch of fractions and he has to change those into decimals for his purposes. So not all engineers agree that Imperial is preferred. I just find it amusing that Adam and Laura run into this same dilemma after my having recently been reminded of the ongoing debate. I equate this with the Querty Theory. Sometimes it's difficult to change something because everyone's so used to it being the way it was. Like Qwerty keyboards long after we no longer need the letters how they were configured for manual typewriters, we still use the Qwerty set up cuz typists would have to relearn how to type if we switched to Dvorak or something else. Maybe America will never go metric. That's a shame.

I don't see the problem with using both systems. The reason why Imperial still exists is used today (even in Canada, along with the metric system) is because it's much easier to use when working in the field of carpentry and construction. Using metric to draw and do calculations on house blueprints is anal retentive.

Alex Seguin you feel that way because its qwerty. the imperial system has been used in construction for centuries so to change everything to metric now is cumbersome. However, the metric system is more precise and when used properly it's easier in the long term. in the short term its too much trouble, and some are resistant to change. Again, qwerty.

I grew up with both as well... It was a pain in the ass! But I appreciate it more now because I can easily follow instructions in both. You'll be relieved to know that in the sciences and at NASA, they've been using Metric for ages!

I don’t live in the US, but I have been to several times (10 to be more exactly) and I think It has to be with how big the USA actually is, Imperial has bigger measurements (one inch is twice a centimetre).

You can tell with everything Adam works on that he has a lot of determination and he gets focused until he finishes whatever he's working on. I love DIY or tinker type video's and Adam is one of those people to try and make stuff or figure out better ways for things, love the content and keep up the awesome video's Adam!!
