Testing Alcohols by Oxidation

In this demonstration, various alcohols are heated with acidified potassium dichromate solution.
During this test, primary and secondary alcohols are oxidised; a colour change from orange to green is observed. Tertiary alcohols cannot be oxidised; the solution remains orange and no reaction takes place.
