In this video, we're going to talk about testing glucose and ketone levels. Which one is more important to do?

When you test your glucose:
• The lower the glucose, the higher the ketones
• The higher the glucose, the lower the ketones
When you start out, you might have a blood sugar of around 80, but as you do ketosis, you'll find it goes lower and lower. If you're feeling great, you probably aren't developing hypoglycemia.
But, there is something called the dawn phenomenon that happens for a few reasons. It may happen because of gluconeogenesis, you're prediabetic, you have insulin resistance, or you get a spike in cortisol.
When you test your ketones:
You can check your ketone levels through your blood, breath, or urine.
When you start out, I recommend checking your urine. When you're more experienced, I recommend checking your blood.
Ketones provide 30-38% of the fuel in the body. 50-60% of the fuel is going to be from fatty acids. Even though your ketones may be low, you may still be burning fat. You just can't test it.
I wouldn't worry if you're doing keto and intermittent fasting, but you're ketones are low-it's because probably because of the dawn phenomenon.
Which is more important to test, glucose, or ketones?
*I think glucose is more important to test than ketones. But, I recommend testing them both to understand what's happening and the significance of each one.

Even while doing Keto faithfully and losing weight, my blood glucose is ALWAYS 90 to 100. I believe the biggest reason is Cortisol. I am stressed way too often these days. I know that I have to find a way to lower my stress. At this point, lowering my stress is probably more important than doing Keto.

To lower stress, I have at least 1200mg of benfothiamine daily, at least 3g of potassium, enough salt, nutritional yeast is rich in zinc but I have to get around 5-15 tablespoons of it daily. Check cronometer.

Also pay attention to your breathing. Focus on it and breath through your nose and then exhale through your mouth. Do it slowly and intentionally. It will take practice. It works for me. Also learn to identify the triggers and work on removing or dealing with them. There will always be stress. Be aware of your surroundings.

Dr. Berg, can you please address the importance of the Glucose-Ketone index and explain its implications in long term overall health and wellness? Thank you and love your content!! 👍
@PudgyCurmudgeon
@PudgyCurmudgeon 2 ай бұрын
This is 2 years late but here's my understanding: The Glucose Ketone Index (GKI) is a biomarker that represents the ratio of blood glucose to ketones. It provides a single value to assess your metabolic health and the efficiency of your body in burning fat for fuel. The GKI is calculated using a formula that considers both glucose and ketone levels, which can be measured using commercial blood glucose monitors and ketone testing devices. A low GKI indicates a higher degree of nutritional ketosis, which may be beneficial for overall wellness and longevity, even if you don't have specific health conditions that require a ketogenic diet. By monitoring your GKI regularly, you can track your metabolic state and make dietary adjustments as needed to maintain optimal health. However, it is essential to note that a single GKI reading may not accurately reflect your overall metabolic health, as factors like stress, fasting, and high-fat meals can affect individual measurements. Therefore, it's advisable to track your GKI over time to get a more accurate picture of your metabolic status.

Hey since i started drink apple cider vinegar my pigmentation reduced within 2 month. Before i had big dark spots on my cheeks now they all gone away. Healthy diet and acv, nothing special needs to reduce melanin. You need vitamin C to reduce hiperpigmentation and acv will help you absorb v.C from your food. Do not take synthetic vitamin C as a supplement. Eat green vegetables and fruits.

You got my hamster wheel turning.. So, are fatty acids as protective as ketones? What makes a ketone superior if it is? Ive heard that ketones help respiration via burning less oxygene for fuel process, ketones give divers an advantage via high co2 levels safer, ketones protect cells from radiation, ketones are muscle spairing, ketones make you feel good mentaly, ketones let you balance seritonin and dopamine rather than the unbalance of the dopamin/ seritonin seesaw, ketones do signaling for cells, ketones make it into small veins to help heal low oxygen areas and ketones I love.. : ) I know nothing of regular fatty acids. I've checked my glucose twice a day during my entire keto journey (and charted it). You are confirming what I've suspected. I appreciate the confirmation. I also have a keto meter but don't use it a lot because of the what you've outlined. I've started eating about a tablespoon of ginger root after my evening meal to help with that last bit of belly fat. (It's hot, lol) My sugar recently started to climb just a little. This is puzzling since everything I've read says the ginger should help sugar levels. Are the carbs in the ginger driving the increase or do you think it's the dawn?

There is something we are missing. I have been on keto (less than 20g carbs per day) for a good 9 months now and on OMAD 5/7 days a week (16:8 for the the days) and i am still having glucose in the 12 to 15 mmol/l range but while having ketones between 2 and 3. And i had to significantly cut on my insulin because it dropped my blood glucose in extreme ways (which is a good thing i guess). As soon as i inject insuline my ketone vanish. So the invert relations seems to be between ketone and insulin, not ketone and glucose.

I really like your approach and the way you present all this knowledge! I am really interested in the keto diet but i was left with a couple questions.. The human body cant get glucose out of fat thats why it produces keton bodies instead right? Why do anorexic people still have this typical breath odor, arent they in ketosis for a pretty long time? has this something to do with hypoglycemia? I would love to hear/read your expertise on this! Or maybe somebody could recomend me a video where he already talked about this

Dr Boz goes by the Boz Ratio, which is calculated by dividing the blood glucose by the blood ketones. Under 80 is nutritional ketosis or fat burning, under 40 is immune system repair, etc. and under 20 is therapeutic for things like cancer and should be done under supervision. Fora6 and Keto Mojo are both able to test ketones and glucose.

I just tested mine before bed, last meal was 8 hours ago, eating window 2 hours, 20g carbs for the day. Glucose was 87, ketones were 1.1 for a Boz Ratio of 79, which is fat burning. I don't want to lose weight, though...

Been doing KETO for 1.5 years, lost 50 pounds, my weight loss has slowed down but I'm still loosing. Truly I started KETO to get healthy not loose weight, the weight loss is just an added benefit. I'm the only one in the family doing KETO and they understand I no longer eat Bread, Pasta, Rice, Potatoes, Sugar, etc. What they don't understand yet is IF and that I don't want to eat Breakfast at 7am because once I eat all fat burning stops. I'll keep trying to educate them as Dr. Berg has done for me, but they still do the 3 meals + snacks while I prefer 1 or 2 meals, no snacks.

I’ve been doing keto since the beginning of the year. My definitely fat adapted and have lost 50 lbs, mostly fat. I’ve started to incorporate some bad and good carbs into my diet and am seeing my blood sugar rise a bit, but what’s interesting is that now my ketones are always between .9-2.1 when I test in the morning regardless if I have dessert with dinner the night before. What is going on? Has my body said, “ok, we’re gonna use both glucose and ketones/fatty acids for fuel?” I do notice I get inflamed and don’t feel as well after eating too much sugar and need to cut back, but I’m super curious as to physiologically why I’m not getting kicked out of ketosis? Has anyone else experienced this? 🤔

Thanks so much for this, Dr Berg! I purchased a Mojo meter a few months back and have been testing my ketones about every 3-4 days, but it came with glucose test strips too, and I didn't know how/why to use them. I'm on the thin side and have never been seriously overweight, but recall having a doc tell me years ago that I tended to be hypoglycemic. I feel good and am enjoying keto + IF, and appreciate your offerings here on KZbin. Much appreciated!

Just a little side note, Last night I started to listen to WABC RADIO OUT OF New York City and there was some doctor on the show last night, and he was saying how important it was for people to consume/ or take Coco at least twice a week in order to combat inflammation in one’s heart as well as in their lungs, And he said that studies have shown that Coco is very beneficial to one’s health; And he went on to say that his office sells the Cocoa powder to their patients, So I’m sitting here thinking about Cocoa powder that I’ve used when helping my mother for baking, And I know how bitter Cocoa powder is, And how much sugar you have to add a recipe in order for it to taste right: So in my little head I’m thinking about how much sugar those patients are typically going to be taking in order to be consuming that much Coco every week ?; So I decided to look up Coco supplements on the Internets, And much to my surprise there are plenty of Coco supplements out there , By various manufacturers that a person just takes in a Capsule form ; So no sugar is needed , But supposedly a person can get all of the benefits of Coco , Improvement in breathing as well as improved circulation functions??; Not to mention improvements in serotonin levels which should help with mood and helping to combat dementia ; Especially in older peoples??; I’m interested in anything that either the doctor, or anyone else has in the way of feedback on the Coco ??; Best regards everyone and here’s to your health, Peace out 👍

Wow, I never knew you could get it in capsule form, is it Cacao of Cocoa. Lurv dark choc. I've been making my own dark chocolate bark & chips with Erythritol, so it's sugar free. You can make a chocolate shot with a tablespoon of coconut oil melted, stir in a teaspoon off Cacao whilst it's warm, & stir it all up, swig it down, Yum, it actually tastes sweet from the coconut. Hope that made sense. Take care. ❤🙂🐶

Maxi Bake well buddy, I believe that it’s available in both forms ?; This is all news to me as well, I to am a chocoholic , Plus I really enjoy coconut, In all its forms, Something about it’s aroma along with its taste is so very wonderful, But it’s definitely a booger to try and crack open a coconut ; But very rewarding once you get the darn thing opened up and get to all that awesome coconut milk inside; Definitely worth all the hard work; Not to mention grating up all that fresh coconut meat ; Excellent for snacking around with, As well as baking with; Happy times in the kitchen, I’ll tell you; I’ve always wondered how the Islanders down in the South Pacific were able to get into those things??; But I can see how much it’s worth all the work; Cheers 👍

Hi. I have been looking for exactly this explanation FOR MONTHS! I know this is about keto diets but could you answer some questions please I'm terms of this relationship when it comes to uncontrollable diabetes and DKA? Ketones build when the body burns fat for glucose right? What if the blood sugar doesn't come down and ketones are present? In a diabetic they should be zero, correct? Where is the missing link? I'm not understanding this. So if you take insulin, are you taking too much or too little? And if you are increasing the dose but blood sugar stays unchanged, what does that mean? If someone is insulin resistant does it even matter to change the dose? Isn't resistant, resistant? Or is there anything, like a supplement that can help transporting the insulin to the cells so the body doesn't burn more fat and loses more weight? Hi. Hmm. I have a pretty interesting situation. About a year of keto + IF. Started from 16:8, last couple of months mostly OMAD, rarely 20:4. Nearly no carbs, except for veggies, macadamia, lemon juice, ACV and nutritional yeast. Meaningful hidden carbs are highly improbable. Still, blood ketones stay pretty low, 0,5 - 0,6, and glucose is almost constant - 5.0 (90) day after day... About 5.8 after the meal. The thing I can’t understand is why are ketones so low?

That glucose-ketone thing you started with is not exactly correct. I've gotten blood measurements of G/105 K/0.9 and G/78 K/0.1 so I would say measure both to be sure. Everyone is different. And Ketones are produced BY burning fat. I block fast every weekend starting at 00:00 on Saturday (midnight Fri into Sat) through Sat and into Sun until my GKI

Thts a bit off normal bcus our body produces high cortisol as we wakes up which lead to increase in blood glucose. Hence, the some diabetic patients tend to have higher insulin dose in morning.

In conclusion, a human body fuels on 30-38% ketone, 50-60% fatty acids and 2-20% of glucose. That explains why overdosed glucose is poison because a human body does not need that extra glucose. Question, can you overdose on keone and or fatty acids?

Hi De Berg I LOVE! all your videos on IF and keto, and yes I'm slowly transitioning from 2 meals a day to 1 meal/day. I'm also asking this question on behalf of my bf, when we go to 1 meal a day, do you think our body will be running short of required of potassium, trace minerals, vitamins, etc, since of course the amount of veggies/food in-take reduces when we switch to 1 meal a day ? Pls give us your thoughts on this... And a huge shout out to all those amazing content out there!! thank u dr berg :)

You wont eat much less. You will eat for a long period if youre OMAD and eating the bigass salad he promotes. Plus meat and maybe some cooked veggies. Maybe a treat at the end. If you cut back your intake your body will interpret this as starving and thats way diff from fasting. My stomach is huge at the end of my OMAD and in fact I couldnt eat all I need to eat in an hr, so, stretched it to 2 hrs. Ive lost 55# (30# to go). I take potassium and salt daily, during my fasting window. And magnesium nightly, at bedtime.

The Gluconeogenesis thing, that's what I always talk about when people tell me keto is bad for you. There are essential amino acids and there are essential fatty acids. These are amino acids (proteins) and fatty acids (fats) that we can't make in our bodies and we HAVE TO eat in our diet or we will get sick and die. There is NO SUCH THING as an essential carbohydrate. That means we did not evolve as carbohydrate dependent animals.

After a 5-day fast I went in for a blood test at 110 hours and came in at 78 on glucose. At the time I did not have a ketone tester, but now with my Keto_Mojo I've documented getting into nutritional Ketosis (0.8) in as little as 5 hours if I work out and deplete my glycogen, so I can't imagine not being well into Ketosis at 110 hours. Also, I wake up at 7am, so to eliminate the Dawn Phenomenon at 110-hours, I went in at 10am for the test. And I'm as stress free as it gets, so I can't see cortisol being at play after a great night's sleep. Therefore, my experience thus far has been that glucose is more of a set-point like cholesterol, which for me has always been around 260 (+/- 10), regardless of diet and exercise. It's amazing how every doctor I've had wants to get me on a statin, despite the fact I have arterial ultrasounds documenting I have no plaque buildup, a resting heart-rate of 55, 9% body-fat and a lean athletic build. Just shows you it's all about pushing pills. I plan on doing another 5-day fast next week, so I'll be documenting my G/K levels with 9am and 9pm tests daily.

Wondering what your thoughts are on the supposed Glucose-Ketone Index, or GKI? Is it a solid measurement or just a bunch of bunk? I've been using the Keto Mogo meter to test both Glucose and Ketones and it also gives a GKI score. For the last week I've been almost smack dab on 93 BG and 1 Ketones, which seems high glucose to me and low ketones. Yet the GKI score it gives me indicates "moderate ketosis".

I have an interesting question, you may make a video on this topic First of all, I am one of your biggest fan, got many useful advices from your videos, thank you so much The question is, we know that the problem in arteriosclerosis, plaque formation, and cardiovascular problems is from inflammation and and oxidation of LDL, which is mainly due to sugar, but... there are elements other than sugar that can cause oxidation, iron for example, so...if I am in keto, and restricting sugar, I may have excess iron in my body, which is capable of oxidizing LDL, in that situation, will be dangerous that I am consuming too much fats which in turn automatically raises my blood cholesterol level? I hope you can clear this point, because if so too much fat in keto will still be dangerous and risk factor for cardiac disease in spite of not taking sugar. Thank you in advance
