horse meat doesn't taste that different from beef. if someone gave you a horse steak without telling you it was horse, you'd eat it thinking it was cow meat. it's so similar to the taste of beef that many european supermarkets were selling it by accident. the meat came from a slaughterhouse somewhere in eastern europe, not sure if it was romania or slovenia, somewhere around there, and they were selling it as if it were cow meat, and they provided it to many supermarkets across europe. it wasn't until the meat eventually got tested that it was discovered these stores were selling horse meat labeled as beef
