So the Ursa Mini Pro with only Contrast and Saturation adjustment is right there at the top (something really good about that camera)!!!! Too bad you didn't include the Ursa Mini Pro in the Overexposure Test....Just talking about Image, the Ursa Mini Pro is a very good buy!!!

Tony Capil very true, only a couple of my clients use 10bit. 98% domestic and international use XDCAM 422 8bit. I think a lot of people just assume 10bit = Broadcast, definitely a plus, but not a requirement right.

Great tests and I appreciate the test with other cameras. I like that the EVA1 has stabilisation for handheld as many other cinema cameras don't have this but I have a feeling the C200 will sell more due to RAW available now and the great AF for possible gimbal work. Interested about battery life compared to the C200 and EVA1, I love the Ursa Mini 4.6k but carrying/flying with bricks can be annoying sometimes haha ;)
@ProAVTV
@ProAVTV 6 жыл бұрын
They have different strengths and weaknesses. Both great cameras at the end of the day! Battery life should be similar, both have similar power draws and use similar sized batteries. Although i'd give the edge to the EVA as you can get 3rd party options like SWIT batteries which makes things cheaper. Carl

@michaelrempel9025
@michaelrempel9025 6 жыл бұрын
For me the Ursa Mini Pro comparison was far more important than the C200. The difference is in the bit depth. In theory the 12 bit should forgive far more than any of the 10 bit cameras you showed. So in fact you elected to forgo the most important test. That would also be the main reason the Ursa Mini Pro grades so well against the $60k + cameras.

Good start... Additional useful info would be: What gamma/post LUTs have been used on each camera? Were the light sources tuned to 5600K or 3200K? Did you make any attempt to use the grayscale to grade any color bias back to neutral in post? If so, did you also use any official post LUTs that were actually designed for each camera? Was the grading back to "proper" contrast and saturation done just by eye, or by matching the grayscale and color chips? It'd also be nice to have what you'd consider a 'reference photo' of the scene, showing what you'd consider accurate color rendition of all the objects in the scene. Ditto a closeup of the color checker chart, both pre-and post grade.

Hi Carl. Just been thinking about the AF. It may be that the feedback control system involved is set to be 'critically damped', I think that is the correct technical term, it's been a long time. As a result it gets there quickly, but over shoots in doing so. Think of sports car suspension. This can be mistaken for hunting - or a hard ride. If I'm right it is doing what it is supposed to do, get focussed quick. It is possible to implement these feedback control mechanisms with no over shoot, but then they take a longer time to settle. I appreciate that if contrast AF is used it is also necessary to go past focus to find where it was - exactly as a human operator has to. Bob.
@ProAVTV
@ProAVTV 6 жыл бұрын
Possibly, I'm sure Panasonic will try and improve the AF over time with firmware. It wont ever reach the level of the C200 as Canons AF technology is built into the sensor itself Carl

Carl, Your reviews are really amazing. Thanks for this one as there is a lot of interest in the EVA1 vs the C200. The racking of the focus seems to make continuous AF almost unusable on this camera and it looks to have some of the same tendencies as the GH5 in that regard. I would like to see how much of the highlights you could recover with the C200 using the RAW files without converting them first. Thanks again and keep up the good work!
@ProAVTV
@ProAVTV 6 жыл бұрын
It doesnt even have continuous AF, its definitely designed to help you out by giving you a quick button to push to focus your shot up. And it seems good at that, focus was accurate, just lots of hunting. Just tried it with the actual C200 raw and couldn't actually retrieve that much more which is interesting! Glad you liked the video Carl

Nakean Wickliff I rented the C200 a few weeks back. The AF is pretty amazing. When comparing the RAW files to the GH5 VLOG after the firmware upgrade, I found the canon files to be more versatile. Was interested to hear that Carl didn’t get much more out of them than converting to ProRes. I still opted for the Canon C200 over the Panasonic based primarily on the AF.
@NakeanWickliff
@NakeanWickliff 6 жыл бұрын
John Kitchens I’m a big gimbal person and see myself gravitating to the c200 as well. I don’t find it all that strange that the flexibility was lost after converting to ProRes from raw and it also depends on what flavor of ProRes that was used. 12bit 4:4:4 probably quite a bit different than 10bit 4:2:2

Thanks for the comparison. Definitely helpful. I would be interested to have Ursa mini Pro in the comparison for the low light (I know it is not great and also limited), and also having some very dark areas in the background and generally under-lit and over-exposed areas left in the recordings and then trying to adjust it in the post by gamma curve manipulation to see which ones actually have more leverage for bringing information back without looking noisy and artificial. I hope I'm clear. Thanks again.

Thanks for doing these tests. Would it be possible to see them all white balanced in the grade to get the most honest flesh tone (no green or magenta bias or as little as possible)? This would give us an idea how well the cameras will grade tone but also how much they distort colors (i.e. Sony's fail on the bike's color).

You should try the rolling shutter test in both native ISO's. Cameras with high native ISO's seem to have poor rolling shutter. I think there may be a parallel between the two.
@ProAVTV
@ProAVTV 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea.. I dont see why the native ISO would affect the sensor read out speed though Carl
@SimplestUsername
@SimplestUsername 6 жыл бұрын
ProAV TV the whole point of using rolling shutter (vs global) in CMOS sensors is to minimize signal bleed from one photodiode amplifier to another. This signal bleed produces extra noise in the Image. My theory is that they are slowing the rolling shutter to further minimize amp noise to produce a cleaner image at a lower ISO. Then the compression is keeping the dynamic range relatively the same.

@ProAVTV

+Tony Capil No, it was raw, using Clog 3 and then converted to prores. Clog 2 does have more dynamic range but it’s mainly in the shadows. And so shouldn’t have affected this test much. Didn’t do an ABB, but now you point it out I should have. As I said in the review, not a scientific test. Carl

Hey Carl! What camera would you recommend to shoot a Netflix Original film? The EVA 1 or the Canon C200? I’m a little over a low budget and I need a camera under $10K to film. The camera needs to have a true 4K sensor and the footage needs to be shot on 4K 10 bit at 24fps. I was looking at a bunch of cameras and I figure those 2 were the best options. If you have another one in mind don’t hesitate to tell me. Thanks in advance.
@ProAVTV

If you are able to shoot in raw, then the C200. That would be the best option in my opinion. If the idea of dealing with raw files is too much, then the EVA would be a great option. Carl

Unless there are a of things that have yet to have been mentioned about this camera, i'm a little underwhelmed, I thought from hearing about the specs it would have blown every other cinema camera under £10K out the water but the C200 still seems the best choice to me for picture. Even a GH5 that I own competes with this camera on some level which I didn't think would be possible. Then again I can't afford either but I wish I could and I would get the Canon C200 if given the choice between the two x'D
@BillStreeter
@BillStreeter 6 жыл бұрын
Disagree. The C200 really only outperforms the EVA1 in raw which is quite a different matter when you consider workflow and storage media costs. I guess it really depends on the kind of work you are doing. But I would assume that cameras in this price range are mostly used for fast, somewhat low budget fast turn around work--not the kind of stuff that you would normally want to shoot in raw. At least that's my experience.
@Leo_Terreros
@Leo_Terreros 6 жыл бұрын
Yep, you get 15min of raw footage on each cards. So that's really something to think about. Otherwise the 8bit is great but don't compete with the 10bit 4k of the EVA And you have to think about that the CANON raw have to be rendered in Prores to be workable... So yeah.. Lot of storage needed and time in post prod.
@ProAVTV
@ProAVTV 6 жыл бұрын
Your right, the raw workflow vs the 150mbps EVA footage has to be taken into consideration here. The raw is better, but the EVA footage is very very good. Carl
@ProAVTV

I think if you were expecting it to "Blow every other cinema camera under 10K out of the water" then your sights were set a little high. Canon and Sony make fantastic cameras, matching them or being slightly better is all we could have asked from with the EVA. And its better on pretty much every front than a gh5. Better image, better ergonomics, better features, better everything. Although as a smaller portable option, the GH5 is fantastic dont get me wrong. Carl

I understand where you are coming from, and I didn't mean in terms of high end industry production when it comes to GH5, I just meant when it comes to making at most High End KZbin videos or wedding videos that it's highly competitive

@JamesJacksonFilmz
@JamesJacksonFilmz 6 жыл бұрын
The C200 is designed for a very specific market (online content, vlogs, weddings, events shooting, run and gun doc ect) where 10 bit is not a requirement. Canon has made the decision to specifically separate their cameras based on markets, with the C300 line being designed specifically for broadcast specifications and the C700 for higher film production specification. And Canon can sort of get away with this because of how their cameras have arguably the best ergonomics out of any other in this market, their color science and they easy workflow in post. Now to be fair the C200 is capable of sending out an 10 bit 422 signal either SDI or HDMI but it's only 1080p. However it is a full readout 1080p signal so it's taken the full 4K sensor and downsampling making it sharper than standard 1080p.

WOW, Ursa Mini looked amazing, better than the C200 to my eyes (2nd best in these tests). BlackMagic built one hell of a camera! The ergonomics may not be perfect, but that color science just looks fantastic. (Image being more important to me.) Toughest part is that the Eva1, C200, FS7ii all have their own strong suits, once again proving there is no one perfect camera.

Hey Carl, I actually would rank them #1:Ursa Mini -- a distant #2:C200 RAW -- #3:EVA-1-----and the rest. The skin tones just work decently straight out of the camera on the UMP...maybe it's the lighting or the scene, but that image just looks great.

Question: Do you own/ work with a Ursa Mini Pro or are you just researching? We bought a couple of them but they are so heavy that you can't use them for handheld work at all. They are not just a bit unergonomic but after using them a little I'm "shocked" at how heavy the Ursa Mini Pro is compared to even a Sony FS7.
@NoirEtBlancVie
@NoirEtBlancVie 6 жыл бұрын
I own the Ursa Mini Pro, I will say I use it primarily on sticks, but I do shoulder rig it from time to time. I can agree ergonomics are not ideal, but for my workflow the Ursa's ProRes is just invaluable for me. I used to spend time transcoding the XAVC-L to ProRes from the FS7 and it was just not doable anymore for turnaround times. I just wish the FS5 had more codecs and 10bit 4K, honestly that would be my perfect camera.

hey i am a new amateur filmmaker. i used to shoot with dslr, but now thinking of buying cinecam. what is a native ISO ? if the native is 2500, can i still shoot with the lowest ISO in bright sunny day ? because in dslr, the lower the ISO, the higher the DR you get, and the cleaner the looks thanks a lot, appreciate the help
@ProAVTV
@ProAVTV 6 жыл бұрын
The native ISO is where you get the most dynamic range. So you can lower the ISO on sunny days but you will loose DR. Best to keep at native, so 800 or 2500 on EVA and use ND to lower exposure. Carl
@SimplestUsername
@SimplestUsername 6 жыл бұрын
Native ISO is the ISO that the Manufacturer intends for you to shoot at to achieve the maximum usable dynamic range. Take the 5D Mark III for example, The Native ISO 100 with 11 stops of dynamic range, but at ISO 800 it drops to 10.6 stops. _"because in a dslr, the lower the ISO, the higher the DR you get, and the cleaner the look"_ Incorrect, that may be true with many of Canon's DSLRs but not all DSLRs have the same Native ISO(100). For example, the native ISO for an A7rII is ISO 800, achieving 12.3 stops of dynamic range, and the a7s is 1600, achieving 11.8 stops of dynamic range. One last note: if you are shooting RAW the native ISO _more or less_ functions only as a guideline for setting exposure correctly. That's because if you shoot something in RAW, no matter how much you change the ISO the camera is capturing the same amount of information.
@mhakantiryaki
@mhakantiryaki 6 жыл бұрын
If you shoot at 800 ISO or lower, you should use 800 BASE native ISO. If you shoot at higher than 800 ISO, you should use 2500 BASE native ISO.

I'm a self-appointed video data curmudgeon ;) If RAW has 14 bits of channel data how can it be displayed on your (or my?) 8-bit display? Whenever I see these "before" grading and after grading clips I question the tester's understanding of the subject. One of us is missing something. That is, how can you look at two RAW captures and judge one to be more magenta than the other? There is no way to visualize all the data on current displays. Since RAW will be very susceptible to color issues (from artificial light especially) can we really claim there is an issue unless you try to match a common color chart AFTER debayering? I don't see how you could do it by eye-balling it. Out of the camera 8-bit video, yes there, I can see differences between the cameras, the Canon redder and the Sony less so, but not so much that I could tell the cameras apart if someone graded them to match. Anyway, I hope you'll think more about how you make points about image quality by showing RAW video which, let's back up, cannot be shown. The washed out look is a convention. It doesn't actually look like anything. ALL RAW must be "graded" before showing. Showing a dull grade followed by a saturated grade proves what?
@ProAVTV
@ProAVTV 6 жыл бұрын
+Maxotics Your very right, our cameras are capturing far more data than most of our displays can show. But that definitely doesn’t mean there’s no point in comparing like this. Most cameras can be graded to look the same, but the test is to show the natural colour bias of each brand so that we are informed about the images we capture with each camera. Any colour shift is certainly not a problem, but it’s useful to know it’s there so you know what to grade out. Most of our customers only do a very light grade on their footage, exactly like I do in this test. Carl
@MaxoticsTV
@MaxoticsTV 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Yes, we need to looking at something and the elephant in the room is that if one only shows final grades on KZbin good chance they'll look exactly the same! Anyway, enjoyed your video! Nicely made.

The point is that you can use the 10/12/14 bits when colour grading the image, which helps so, so much with things like banding, noise, etc. Then when you compress it to 8 bits it will look better than when trying to grade with 8 bits in the first place.

Carl... It seems you were over exposed in the first 2 scene files..in beggining of this video. understand, each scene file has to be exposed to that specific scene file... Because it uses curves and contrast... As you were going down to scene file 3 and 4.. those represent broadcast as opposed to the first 2 scene files which is Eva look 1 and Eva look 2 which is film like gamma. So, that being said.. because the broadcast has a very punchy look....then by default...the exposure became correct in THAT scene file.. so, rule of thumb is...as you navigate scene files...so, too must the exposure be adjusted.. I bet the first two scene files would look so cinematic if you had stopped down.. many are judging here, and saying ç200 looks better.....again based in what they are seeing before them... Only, it's not fair... because you didn't PROPERLY expose in the first 2 scene files.....where if you did.. the image would be STUNNING!!
@ProAVTV
@ProAVTV 6 жыл бұрын
Well, I agree with you that each scene file should be exposed differently. But the test was to see the difference each scene file makes, so if it makes the image brighter, darker etc. is an important part of that Carl

1) I am sorry, but 200 fps ISO 3200 upscaled HD to 4K - the image quality is really POOR guys!!! 5:36 look at her hair - really badly artifacts going on there. Unacceptable poor image quality for high frame rate even outside where you have a lot of light! 2) 7:59 You start the Test but don't give any shooting settings for each shot: ISO, WB, FPS, Exposure measurements light/shadows Key light, Lens apertures and so on. 3) No CRI information on Key light. Thats is why probably on 8:57 the model has such a greenish unpleasant skin tone, cause LED you use is probably failed having bad CRI specs. 4) Overexposer test: again NO Information on WB setting in cameras, ISO Base settings of each camera. Then it does not make sense in terms of skin tone judgment and Overexposure ability of each camera! 5) Seems that we needed in underexposer test to see more shadows in the image itself. Perhaps just go outside on the street to grab single shot for each camera. Then you will see the real noise. 5) Finally what was the real color of the scooter on the background ? %))))) Anyway thanks for the test. Soon I have to put my own hands on that camera go and test it proper way.
