as much as we'd love to hate this beast, i give props to MB for updating it enough to continue to comply with the very strict safety and emissions regulations in the US, i.e. california. Other SUVs like the Defender and Pajero have since perished here because of those hurdles, yet the G wagon soldiers on.

yeah, that was a learning for me. Here in the US a 70+ retired couple who only ever drove a buick can buy a dually pickup and a 40' fifth wheel and take to the roads with no training. To haul that size trailer commercial requires commercial truck driver training and testing.

I don't need a G-Class, is thirsty, difficult to drive and park, but i love that bad-ass, rude, prehistoric, mafia look when i see it on the streets.. and that noise.. I prefer G much more than a "breakable" and "depreciation value" Range Rover.

i got the 290GD engine with electronic injector pump and turbo in my converted 1987G ,its not thirsty at all, beat all other veterans 30 years , .. lovely to drive outside racetracks where its meant to be..mighty good comfort on the higway as well .. bad forest and mountain roads became a dream to drive with the G..

my 01 540i sporwagon is more comfortable than any g class and also my sportwagon can tow (unofficially, but from bimmerforums, 9400lbs) also my sportwagon holds more people and cargo and handles better it's better in every measurable way (except with passenger oriented tech like satnav but that's subjective) your golf may be "slower" but it's a better vehicle for real roads in most ways lmao!!!!!

Fifth gear, its not for track driving. Its an SUV, and the priority is therefore off-road ability. So the best car at being an SUV is the G-class, or to be more precise, the G-300 Professional (its the stripped-out, 461-gen version used by 63 militaries globally)

It's fast in a straight line, that's what people will use it for : Autobahn. Of course any SUV won't handle well on a racetrack, your Range Rover won't even be able to start. I swear, Brits are the only ones to praise their range rovers and jags.

It handles horribly on the toad to preserve the off-road capabilities. Ive driven many of these for work (MB dealer tech), they handle very well, for a mid-sized oil tanker...that is drunk. LOLZ!

G is not built for the track or high speed road. It's a design feature the stability control comes in early to keep the brick on the road. It's about 100% off road first, and not be a poseur. Do what I do, buy a real sports car to go with your G for the track and keep the G for what its good at, such as deep snow, and chasing balloons in the outback.

itd be cool if someone took this G and hooked up a heavy boat like a Malibu 24LSV and towed from the bay area up to Lake Tahoe. That would show towing to the max. Then once up there attempt to do parts of the rubicon utilizing the locking diffs. I have now watched about six different reviews on the G and not one has expressed the point and really the advantage of having locking diffs as opposed to the Range Rover which is essentially limited slip. I took the new range off road and it did well but it bounced around a lot once the obstacle required low range and technical articulation. Too bad the Range does not have a button like the G that allows one to lock out the three different diffs. Anyone else think this test could have been more dramatic meaning more weight to tow, harder off road, and what its like over taking cars on the freeway or just a couple drag races against other cars. I agree taking this car on a track is pretty ridiculous to me but it is funny to watch.

Agreed. You can't compare the G with anything, there is no comparison. It is unique in its the very last of the great "old school" off roads now that the Range Rover is a ford explorer wanna be with extra trim and Land Rover is a soccer mom vehicle built on a Tahoe competitor frame (Sequoia). Maybe a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is close if you don't have the G AMG bucks, but I will leave the wimpy V6 to the masses.

It's more likely for such a car to tow a yacht or horses, than a Gypsy or Mynheer manison. At least Top Gear would have destroyed it with the test, a point of honour (not for racist reasons, but for unblocking the streets)

Had a 300GD, it drove like a tank off-road. It's strange to hear "reliability" and "G-wagon" in the same sentence, though. The G63 is a nice machine, but versus a Rangie Sport SVR or the Rangie SVAutobiography it makes little sense.
