That's not how the demon core worked. Criticality was caused by _covering_ the core.

i know you probably thought of this and just didnt like the look, but may i suggest bumpmapping your custom models (or some form of similar texturing) to make them more in line with the realistic ones? would make them look coherent together, after all (again im probably being dumb and you have reasons to not do anything for either way but)
