@@rayceofhistory indeed. The winter war gave Hitler the confidence to attack soviet union. Big mistake.

In Finland we have this saying; "Ryssä on Ryssä, vaikka voissa paistas." Meaning "A ruskie will always be a ruskie, even if you fried him in butter." It is a phrase that i find often saying myself even today when i hear the news about these recent poisoning scemes and internal corruption and geopolitical moves in, say, Ukraine. Russia is a neighbour which one has to have a plan B prepared for because it is such a unpredictable and formitable neighbour to have. That is why we are and have to have a top notch reputation and representation in the international diplomatic world. But that is not to say we couldn't nor that we wouldn't be willing to defend our homes if things got ugly.

I've been doing a lot of reading on countries that were brought in under the USSR in the Eastern Bloc, like the lead up to the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia. All of these countries in the area seem to have their modern day ways of thinking surrounded by previous encounters with Russia, whether pre or post Soviet Union. Living in the U.S., all of these things seemed to be ancient history, things that happened but have long since been resolved. But in a lot of cases, they haven't. Everything about a lot of countries around Russia still harken back to the threat that they see Russia as. It's a much wilder story to follow the history of an area and pull the thread all the way to the modern day, because it shows clearly that some of these historical topics aren't exactly history. They're still very relevant to the modern day.

@@rayceofhistory You need not to look further than eastern and western european countries, and can already see a clear difference how these countries regard Russia. Take, say, France & Spain and Estonia and Poland, for example. It is like night and day, almost. Estonia thinks of Russia almost like a giant flea in its fur, if you will :D

@@MLG_s3npa1 It almost seems like national PTSD to me. And that is something I can see more clearly being from the states, because we have it here. We have some weird part of our brain that can be tapped when Russia comes into the equation, especially the older generation that lived through the Cold War. The whole thing is very interesting to me.

@@rayceofhistory kind of ironic that the red scare was more prominent on your side of the atlantic than here. But of course we have gotten kind of used to it that we have a giant russian bear sleeping right next us.

@@MLG_s3npa1 I think that is exactly why it was more prominent here. We have become accustomed to being geographically isolated. Because of that we have had very few instances of actual threat of the homeland. I think it makes us more vulnerable overall, because then any threat, including internal threats of a communist takeover, are amplified to 1000 whether it's justified or not.

Considering size and resources, its mindblowing how well finnish airforce did. Per capita most flying aces in WW2 and highest scoring non-german pilot of all time with 94 to 128 aerial combat victories...at the beginning of Winter War, Finland had 30 fighter planes.

Honestly that's basically the story of the whole Finnish military. They have almost nothing in comparison to the Soviets in really every category. Manpower, rifles, ammo, mortars, shells, planes, they just have so little of everything that seeing how well they do is really crazy. They put the Soviet military under the world spotlight by prosecuting the war in the manner that they did and doing as well as they did.

I spent a year in the USA(Pittsburg PA) in 1984-85, I got the funny hat and being 187cm tall blond man. I met some girls. But to the point: even then Texans were considered, at my place, a little bit like the Appalachians. But hereing you, the facts all in order and well educated of these little Europian stuff, I retract and salute you! I hereby announce you as an Honorary Finn, with all my might of being Reserve Lieutenant of Finlands Navy!

😂😂I just saw this. And that’s fair enough, Texas is still viewed that way in many parts of the US, and probably the world. And when your country is only a few hundred years old, you have to branch out with learning history. Not a ton of time to cover with the US as a country.

Ah, the Winter War. An event that became a factor in Nazi Germany’s decision to invade the Soviet Union. I love that the Finnish initially allied with Germany in WW2, then turned their coat when the conflict turned against the Germans. In my opinion they were smart to do so, and played the game as well as they could.

Finland was given the choice of driving the Germans out of Finland, or having the USSR do it for them. The latter option would no doubt have ended in Soviet occupation. That's not coat turning, that's cutting your losses.

The treaty was done by our president at the time under his own name. So technically Finland did not ally with Germany. When the treaty became obsolite, Finland changed the president thus making the treaty unvalid

It's interesting that the highly effective late war Red Army still kind of handled its reconnaissance by attacking, but had refined the method close to perfection. Instead of carefully scouting (or blundering blindly forwards like they do here), they'd often throw a battalion or so at enemy, with artillery and air support. That's enough to force the enemy to react in strength and reveal his hand. It could be very costly, but certainly got results, and of course the Soviets had entirely different idea of acceptable casualties than our societies do these days.
