I remember watching Vivian Kubrick's documentary and the way her dad spoke to Shelly Duvall on the set seemed really, really off. I've heard various Kubrick apologists fall back on 'he was merely trying to coax the best performance out of her', and it's a load of guff. He was really awful to her. Surely a masterful auteur wouldn't need to stress his actors to the point of breakdown, for them to produce their finest work. Friedkin did much the same, on the set of The Exorcist. The 70s were a time when the director was God and could get away with a ton of unacceptable twattery, alas.

I said this on the previous video of this series but me as a aspiring filmmaker (for lack of a better term because I would rather prefer making shows) I would hate to do this to any actor or crew i would work with and filmmakers shouldn't make people miserable to make "good art" because no matter how many drafts and takes are done not everyone will like it and that's it because people are people who have different things that appeal to them so accepting that is a crucial step in being a good artist and good person EDIT: To add you can disagree with me all you want just stating my opinion

Not a horror movie director but one of my favorite movie directors is Sidney Pollack. I haven't watched all of his work. I have only seen Tootsie and his movie debut, The Slender Thread. He gets a lot out of his actors but always treats them with the amount of respect and care they deserve. That's coming from the actors who have worked with him. For example, when Anne Bancroft had to do a suicide scene in The Slender Thread, she was wearing a heavy wet suit when she had to go in the water. It got to the point where she had a scare, and Pollack and others had to help her. As scary as that was, it was nice to see Sidney stop and help her. Jane Fonda had positive things to say about him when she was in his other film, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (which is a commentary on American greed). She said he would always ask for her opinion on things like? What she thought he could do with the script. To me, that's how directors should direct...

As a director and someone with a theatre degree, actually trying to get “natural” emotions like that isn’t directing or acting. If you’re genuinely having a reaction like this, that’s not acting you have to trust that the actors can do their job and you guide them to do that well. Also method acting isn’t acting. im not saying people are wrong for feeling that the character change felt misogynistic, but why is it bad for a woman to be whiny and crying when shes scared for her life? why does a woman being emotional make her a bad character? i think women can be 'weak' and they dont have to be strong in terrifying situations. its interesting how men seem to have a problem with how shelly acted her character but a lot of women resonate with it

When I was 16 years old (2005), I lived in the same town as Shelly. She was a frequent patron of the restaurants I work at and I saw her almost daily. And after personally knowing her and having countless conversations with her, I refuse to watch the Shinning movie to this day. I never knew her as a celebrity she was just a lost soul who had severe emotional and psychological problems. She was a tortured soul who was afraid of any and everything. She said the FBI was listening to her, kids or aliens were in her pipes, there were implants in her head, she drove around with bags of cash in her car, her car was filled with clothes and toys, she would order 7 items from the menu, everything had to be in togo containers even the food she wanted to eat there, she cried a lot…… I was told eventually by some towns folk of who she was and that she was crazy. That she was Olive Oil from Popeye or Wendy from the Shining. I don’t know if a year of working on the Shining made her this way or if it had a hand in helping her towards a path of psychosis but damn she was and is still broken.

He has certainly made some classic films but I feel like anyone could piece together a classic if they have 100 takes to work with for every scene. However, I don't think Kubrick was off-base for saying that King was a weak writer if he was speaking in terms of his screenwriting abilities. Stephen King is a horror genius, there's no debating that. But he does not write the best screenplays. He only did the screenplays for a handful of his films - and none were his best work. All of his highest rated and most well known films were adapted by screenwriters - not King himself. Gerald's Game, It (any of them), Shawshank, Stand By Me, Misery, Green Mile... just to name a few. We wouldn't have these stories without King's genius but he's not a screenwriter. I think Kubrick did a better job adapting it to film, even if it wasn't exactly like the book.

I love the movie… it makes me unnerved… a large part of that however is Wendy. I don’t really LIKE Nicholson’s character in the film, so when she hits him with the bat, or the knife after Here’s Johnny, or even when she gets away with Danny I always smile and shout and rejoice because she kicked his ass and got away… I don’t care who you are, actor director etc. I’m not going to stand by and be mistreated; so I commend Shelley for enduring it, and feel horrible that it cost her so much. At the end of the day, I’d rather be more mentally stable and walk off a set than tortured and part of a “classic”. It’s not worth it, and it’s inexcusable. I’ve honestly often wondered how much legal leg Shelley would have had to stand on if she’d tried to bring suit against him for intentional infliction of emotional distress… She has a very clearly documented case… but I don’t know how much weight it would hold legally speaking.

I never found The Shining scary, or even creepy . I don't know why. I never loved his movies either. Im not just trying to be anti Kubrick, i've seen most of his movies and I have never had the urge to re watch them. When I have I find them underwhelming. That's putting it nicely. I think his influence in cinema is obviously great, but I don't rate him much, or as highly as he is regarded as a film maker. I think hes over rated, one of the most overly regarded people in cinema. I think Hitchcock, for example, is so much better as a same-era director. Much MUCH better movies, too.

@mikeokeeffe46922 жыл бұрын
@@michaelsims1160 presuming a lack of understanding is pretty arrogant. I've watched, studied, researched his symbolism, allegory, technique and looked into the layers of commentary that his movies make in their own aspects with documentaries, programmes and watched other cinematic critics giving their opinions and praise, and I just don't share the taste for his movies. I have tried to appreciate them. I've rewatached a few of them and I understand why people love them so much but I don't have a problem admitting that I do not. Another thing is when you say that you get people making assumptions like you must be missing something to not like them - like you did there or acting like you just denied gravity or something. He's a film maker. His products are subject to be disliked, that's the beauty of art. Its subjective and subjectively recieved. I still find things to like in his movies and about them.. but that's as far as it goes. So please don't be so assumptive and presuming that just because I'm not a fan there was some kind of intellectual gap in my appreciation that must explain my distaste in his work. That's very arrogant indeed.

from what I know, Kubrick protected him from a lot of the horror elements in the movie and he didn’t even know he was in a horror film!

I always appreciate your thoughtful videos. The Shining is one of my favorite films and a big part of that is because of Shelly Duvall. I think Wendy is a great character and demonstrates that even someone who appears fragile and weak can still be heroic. Wendy survives her husband and escapes the Overlook while protecting her son and grieving the dissolution of her family. As far as the Razzie award, it’s common knowledge that upon its initial release The Shining was a critical and financial failure so I think it was just dogpiling on the “ bad movie” hype the film was known for then.

Never read the book. I've tried watching the movie several times over the years but I've never actually sat through the entire thing at once. That said, the way Kubrick treated Duvall paired with not being that impressed with the Shining, I've never even tried another one of his films. That's JUST ME though. Great video, as usual! I love that shirt too btw

I definitely recommend checking out the 1997 Miniseries. Especially if you prefer the book over Kubrick's film. The miniseries is much more faithful to the original story. It really captures the depth of the characters. Wendy in the miniseries has more agency, Jack has a tragic arc and isn't just crazy from the beginning like he is in the film, and Danny gets to be more than just a plot device. The miniseries is well cast and well acted. It isn't perfect (there are a couple of CGI effects that don't quite hold up), but I think it is much better than a lot of people give it credit for. I know some people hate on the miniseries because it isn't anything like the Kubrick film, but that's because the Kubrick film has very little in common with the book. It is a worthy adaptation of Stephen King's novel.
