Thanks for this awesome tutorial! Question for you Luis: Example: My assets: High polygon OBJ model 4K texture image shader in another software render engine If I import my OBJ into Blender, set the target resolution to 4K in the density tool, and calculate the density to check (let’s say it calculates it as 10.24) what it currently is, then change the texel density to the max 40.96, then use UVPackMaster to automatically scale the UV of that imported model and pack it, will it KEEP the newly chosen (40.96) texel density? If not, is there a auto slicer addon tool for UVs to fit a certain texel density and resolution? But if UVPackmaster does, do I need to export the OBJ a certain way out of Blender to keep that texel density information that was changed? And last question, when I import that OBJ into Blender in the first place, do I need to unwrap it even if it has been already unwrapped? (I will use Zen UV if I have to, I also don’t want any UV distortion when unwrapping it so will Zen UV make seams that won’t cause that to happen?)

is there any addon in blender 2.8 the allows you the "stack" uv shells/island easily ?

when using this im using pixels to color, when I try to color a 2nd block though it just uses the same texture from the first one I colored and wont let me color the 2nd black as an individual

Hi Luis, awesome plugin indeed! Question: the only thing that I cannot seem to figure out is how to set the texel density of different parts from the same mesh. For instance, in cylinder objects the INSIDE can be much lower texel density.

well, in that case Id manually adjust the UVs, but if you want a specific set, try separating those parts, applying the density and then merging again? maybe there is a more optional way

I am just learning about texel density and am excited to get this add-on. I'm confused by the ending--after setting all meshes to have the same texel density, why change it for the umbrellas? Doesn't that defeat the point?

Hi, I have a question. As I understand, this addon lets you to make all your objects have same density. It has also some extra features such as adjusting texel density of other objects based on the last selected. But other than that, Blender has already Average UV Island feature. So what is the point to use this addon? Please don't missunderstand me, I just cannot get it.

average islands and pack islands are good for basic geometry, but dealing with 60+ parts on a same object those default tools become too simple.

So you have changed the texel density by defining the px/cm but after you packed the layout it changed. So may i ask what is the point in here?

The video was edited in a non linear form, that caused this confusion. Your px/cm stays the same.

@ Can you explain how? If your texture was 2048x2048 and you wanted 2.36px/cm texel density and it unwrapped it to be huge (It wouldn't fit the UV), how can it still have the same density on the same size texture map once UV packmaster scaled it down? (I am still learning about texel density and I am very confused by this). For my understanding the UVs aren't limited to pixels but once you say that you want a 2048x2048 texture to cover that UV you sort of give it a certain maximal px/cm size, no?

​@@zoranmilutinovic9890 Texel Density is mainly an optimization tool. The islands that need to have a bigger size(higher-density of pixels) are the ones that the player will see more ingame. Those are the ones you need to take attention to follow at least the same density of the other objects of the level. In production, the reality is that most artists eyeball that more often than you think. Best! Luis

It adjusted the texel density to 2048x2048 and then it rescaled it when it got UV packed and thus voiding the intended texel density? To clarify I don't just need all the objects to have the same density, I need a certain texel density to follow a game ready guideline.

@@zoranmilutinovic9890 This might be a small amount of extra work, but you could in theory calculate the texel density of all the objects once they are UV packed and then use the ratio between the current texel density and your desired texel density to rescale the image texture resolution. For instance, let's say your desired texel density was 3.9 px/cm and the current texel density was 1.3px/cm for an 1024 x 1024 image. Then you would divide the desired texel density by the current texel density (3.9 / 1.3 = 3), and use the result of that to resize the image texture (1024*3 x 1024*3= 3072 x 3072). However, this might not be game-ready since the textures are not powers of two.

You set a high TD in the 3D viewport window and the islands appeared too large for the UV map square on the right. After packing the UV your TD dropped significantly in the 3D viewport (bigger checker squares). Now how can you pack without reducing the TD ? I'm suffering this exact issue and unable to identify a solution :(

Thats with another addon called UVpackmaster2, there you can check preserve scalling when packing :)

@ Thanks for your reply :) Ive been using Shotpacker. However, when the islands are reduced down to fit inside the map the TD drops. Is it a case of increasing the UV map size to suit the desired TD? E.g. ive increased the texture size to 8192 x 8192 to support a TD of 9.4 px/cm.

I believe so, turns out its not rocket Science, if the final asset is used in game and the player doesnt notice compression artifacts or blurred pixels, saving texture memory and UV space, its a win.

Thank you for this information, but what i don't uderstand, is that: we set for all object same density, but when we pack it, we end up with not same and you say it is not problem. That does not make sense to me. : ) Do you mean the difference will be not that huge? So we can work with that? That's why you say it is not problem?

4:17 depends,. Different texel density can lead to texture looking odd, Especially lower res. It depends I guess, i know that atleast naughtydog values texel density very high, everything has to have an comparable equal texel density for them, according to a talk from Uncharted 3 i guess

@LUIS - Cannot install in Blender 2.82 - there is no errors at all - it just not installing this addon - it looks like installing with no errors but when I check if this is installed in Addons then simply there is not installed. Have somebody fixed this one? And zip file size are only 28 kb? Really?? So small when I download it?

the uv's blender layout is better in 2.79... but , if you are using texture atllas addon + texel density addon + pack master the things go better.... however requires some modification in uvs manually most of the time, specially for more than 6 props per atlas... average scale in blender before or after the process could be a mess... I think blender's need to incorporate a serialized field for texture atlasing and texel density ...

Hey this is wonderful and helps a lot! I want to use it for Blender 2.8 but the latest updates changes must have messed with the addons. any updates? I've only been using it for a few weeks, but found it to be really useful. Thanks for putting it up for free, Now I know its power, I will drop £10 onto it. Once it is up and running again. edit: Just seen you are just displaying the work, and not the original author! good video anyways!

As you pack the islands in the 0-1 with UV master, the texel density decreases, right? Because Islands were bigger originally, right?
