The thing about Team Fortress is that, despite it's flaws, it FEELS good to play. There's a satisfactory reaction to every kill, as if it was earned. You can Carry your team, you can be a team player.... There isn't a limit as to what you can do. Overwatch.... Overwatch TELLS you what you can and can't do, so there's only so much you can improve. TF2? the limit is your creativity in problem solving. The ragdolls, the lore, the gameplay, the subclasses... Whatever Valve did, TF2 makes you come back to it.

Overwatch lore is much better than tf2's in my opinion.
@boltogen54163 жыл бұрын
@@mapleshade2913 To each one’s own. I did enjoy Overwatch’s lore for a while, but admittedly tuned out after Sombra’s launch. I honestly felt that it took itself a little too seriously, don’t get me wrong taking it serious is great. But it got to a point where the game and story felt completely disconnected, gameplay did not seem to fit the story they tell apart from their limited time gamemodes. I just like TF2’s better because since it’s world is so crazy and absurd, what happens in the game feels completely natural to that world. Of course Demoman would hit people with a grenade rather than throwing it. I also feel like SFM and GMod had a heavy part in making TF2’s world loveable. Overwatch never really got anything like that, so it’s characters never got the same charm. What came with memes sadly just stemmed from one punchline jokes or a single voiceline, which made the characters feel shallow by result of the community.

HONORABLE MENTION: Paladins The game is constantly made fun of for being a "poor man's Overwatch", but there's no denying that the game has found its place in the overcrowded FPS market. If you look at the Steam charts, Paladins regularly has 20,000 daily players up to this date, and receives a solid ammount of updates. Plus, the game is heavily inspired by TF2 if you look at the similar character designs and similar settings. Not to mention, Barik (One of the game's characters) has an Engineer outfit from TF2, showing just how closely inspired Paladins is to the game.

Overwatch is overall dying slowly, the original cast of Overwatch was very well balanced, but many of its later addition heroes are broken, either they have too many weaknesses and counters, or like bridgett, have no counter save another bridgette. Basically this is a symptom of Blizzard's "every hero should feel overpowered" and the " If every hero is overpowered than no hero is more powerful than another" , in all Overwatch is Overwatch's worst enemy, the same as TF2. When Overwatch came out, I was playing that game non-stop and abandoned tf2. Then nearly about a year passes I start to feel bored of Overwatch. I think I felt that way because there wasn’t really anything new. Overwatch 2016 is still pretty much Overwatch 2018. You gotta pick a Reinhardt, two healers and the dps characters (also whatever character is currently op). If you pick characters which are ‘off class’ it sends shivers down your teammates spines. There isn’t much freedom to show off. I ended up crawling back to tf2 just give myself some excitement and individuality. Pick any class and any weapon and it is still possible to top score and contribute massively. Maybe I’ll play engineer defensively with a wrench or offensively with a gunslinger. Maybe I’ll use the rocket launcher for soldier and blast enemies away or use a rocket jumper and jump around the map and jump on peoples heads. MAYBE I WONT EVEN ATTACK THE ENEMY AND HAVE A TAUNT PARTY WITH THEM. In Overwatch all games just feel the same. The only thing that can kill tf2 is valve honestly with their lack of support for the tf2 team. This is all just my opinion. (Side note) I also just think tf2 is less toxic than OW [EDIT] Some people have pointed out that tf2 has an unchanging meta to which I agree to an extent. That’s the meta for 6v6 5cp maps. Theres other game modes which basically allows you to pick a any class and you can make it work e.g. payload maps gives you the freedom to use specialist classes like pyro or heavy on either team. There’s also different weapons combinations which can suit your fancy. There are also different types of tf2 comp game modes such as highlander. That's mostly because of the amount of players. Since OW is a 6v6, if you go around doing your own thing you'll hurt your team a lot. In TF2, you can stay AFK in spawn and it doesn't make a huge difference. I don't remember who said it, but in TF2, you play games, while in OW, you play matches. I like both games equally, but you gotta have different mentalities for them.

Thanks for the suggestions of what other games you think are relevant, I am considering a part 2 if I can find the time to make it! "Lol Overwatch sucks/is dying". Just because you don't like a game or disagree with the direction the developers are taking, that doesn't make it "dying". I really don't get the whole "[game] killer" thing. If you like a genre of games, it's silly to limit yourself to just ONE of those games. If you like platformers, you don't only play Mario Odyssey; you play a wide variety of platformers. If you like fighters, you play all the fighters that appeal to you. Exceptions are the professionals who are required to dedicate large amounts of their time into one game, but that's a negligible fraction of the player base.

This is more in regards to multiplayer games which want you to spend loads of time and money (through microtransactions) on them though. The idea of a “TF2 Killer” isn’t games looking to deliberately stop TF2 from existing, it’s about how there are a limited number of hours in a day, you have limited free time and you’re less likely to play more than 1 multiplayer game since they all have their own style and game feel. If you’re constantly swapping back and forth from Overwatch to TF2 to COD you’re probably having trouble maintaining your overall skill level than if you concentrated on just one. Eventually something has to give or you’re most likely going to end up sucking at all these games you’re juggling.

It may be interesting to note that Loadout kind of has classes built into its weapons. You can have two at a time, making for a bigger mix. That means you can have a healer with rockets, a healer with a sniper rifle or a healer with an assault rifle, but then the healing weapon can also be all of those things, just fired at your teammates. You can basically recreate the Medic from TF2 by giving yourself a healing beam weapon and follow a teammate around, along with an assault rifle for self-defense. Having different abilities in your team and then grouping together is defintely necessary to come out on top. In capture the flag, your team is helped so much by having a guy with mines and rockets to protect your hammer from thieves. In return, having a guy in your team with grenades and perhaps even guided missiles to spam out the defenders was also highly beneficial. What I'm saying is, when a variation of characters with unique abilities in your team leads to success, it's not that dissimilar from other class-based games.

Basically, what we've learned here is that all it takes for a game to be 'TF2 inspired' is to: 1) Be a first-person shooter 2) Have a cartoony art style 3) Be class based 4) Be objective based A real TF2 killer will eventually come. Valve will eventually close the official TF2 servers. But then again, the same can be said for any game. Just think about it, someday in the far-flung future, World of Warcraft will be no more. The most impressive achievement of TF2 is it's ridiculous lifespan. It's been going strong since launch in 2007. It has spanned console generations. I'm honestly not sure if even Overwatch will be able to pull that off. The big draw for any new 'TF2 killer' is the 'new game smell' it has. People will always want to try some new things. Then, after a while, they get used to it and look to see what game offered more fun overall, and that's where TF2 shines. There's something magical about TF2's gameplay. If Valve got a serious dedicated team together and ported TF2 to Source Engine 2, cleaned up the coding and updated the graphics, then TF2 would be back on top of the FPS world.
@roshh67916 жыл бұрын
Yeah when I first saw TF2 (years before I actually played it), it looked so chunky af and I thought it looked quite ugly. The same chunkiness I referred to is still there, but also doesn't bother me (idrk why). I think the main part is that the first person things kinda look, clonky?

Some games can't die even if the developers end the official service. Counter-Strike, for example, would survive through private servers and community run events because of its simplicity and unlimited nature. I wouldn't say it's a titanfall 2 scenario, but i would say it was underrated. With loadout you could mix so many aspects of weapons, including poison, turrets, flamethrowers, lasers, missiles, grenades, mines, and way too many other things to list. Oh and just to emphasize how crazy this game was, at the beginning of a game, all players start in a tight circle, and after 5 seconds all weapons are enabled.

I remember playing this game called Enemy Territory: Wolfenstein (ETW), which was like TF2, although it came out before TF2-- back in 2003, I believe. The game had similar objectives to play online: Offense/Defense and Payload Assault. You only had two teams (Allies versus Axis), and can play five classes: The Soldier (Heavy weaponry and suppression), the Medic (Health aid and resuscitation), the Engineer (Repair, demolition, and defensive mines), the Field Ops (Ammunition aid and air support), and the Covert Ops (Infiltration, spy, and sniper). ETW even had communities that created custom maps and game modes, including Base Jumping (Similar to surfing, but about based on skilled jumping), CTF, Fortress, Intel, and many other wacky things. They even went as far as making custom player models for each given classes. The way I've seen TF2, it was a progeny after ETW.
@liteweight28246 жыл бұрын
I see where you're coming from with the inspiration of Overwatch coming a bit from TF2, but I wouldn't go so far to say its modes are the same/similar. In most first person shooters that have their main combat as team based, you will find lots of capturing points, moving payloads and hybrids from my experience. I see the similarities between them, but there's only a minority of Overwatch's hero roster that share the same kit as TF2 character's kits. Theres one major reason I haven't come back to TF2. Its just because I feel like there's more thought that goes into Overwatch. Different team compositions can swing the game to make it completely different from TF2 combat. You cant really mesh two characters kits together (i.e. Beyblade - Lúcio's speed boost and Reaper's Death Blossom) in TF2. This is all just my opinion.

Jared Piva A hero based shooter needs some sort of charisma within the characters to hold it's ground. TF2, Overwatch and even Paladins to some degree made recognizable characters with personalities, quirks and interactions with others that were far ahead from the competition. Lawbreaker characters were so boring and bland i can't remember the name or face of even one, and i played this game. Also, it tried to hard to showoff as the HARDCORE GAMER OPTION and just ended being cringy for the most part...

I used to play Overwatch in it's early days. Like TF2, I loved OW because of it's unique characters and backstories. It used to feel a lot like TF2 where you can join a game and pick whoever you'd like. Then they started focusing on a competitive atmosphere and it just didn't feel the same for me anymore, especially when it became so toxic I couldn't even try a new hero on CASUAL if it didn't correspond to the meta. That and, how am I supposed to learn how to play someone I don't main if I can't learn with my mistakes even on casual again with people insist that I switch? Eventually I just uninstalled. I might install again to see if it's any less toxic those days (a bit ironic since i've seen news about people saying the game is dying) but who knows.

@@sancor1532 I'm sorry? Could you name some of the characters who are ununique? Is it the brain washed Widowmaker, the robot monk, or the super smart ape who lived in space? Good against evil is the basis of the game as the ACTUAL game is ONE TEAM VERSUS ANOTHER but the backstories are completely different, with depth. But I guess you'll have to type this into translate, since you can't seem to understand English, and you wanted to piss off as many people as possible. Just, please go away and hate something else

@@katielindsey5072 First of all, i understand English, but im not very good at talking, second, why so offended? Those backstories are just normal in a science fictional world like Overwatch's, yes, brain washed, inteligent apes, robots with feelings, never seen before.

I'm still pissed about Loadout and its death. It was pretty fun, and could have been a winner in its own right, but promising too much too early, going F2P too early (imo), and porting to PS4 (of all things) screwed up their priorities. They hadn't even textured one of their maps but put it in anyway because they needed another map. I played since the closed beta (I even had the in-game t-shirt to prove it), but I'm still salty. I suspect part of the problem is the "TF2-killer" label itself. Expecting to be a legitimate rival to a big-name franchise from the start is a bad idea unless you can seriously back it up. Don't believe me? Check out the KIllzone series. The first game was advertised (or at least considered) as a Halo-killer, even though it had almost nothing in common aside from being a futuristic first-person shooter. It obviously didn't kill Halo, and while it still has its fans, it's fallen off the radar. This holds true especially if it isn't that similar to the original. Having played all of them, I'd be reluctant to call Monday Night Combat, Loadout, or Dirty Bomb TF2 clones. They all fit the "hero shooter" genre, but beyond that they're distinct from TF2 and each other. Even Overwatch has its differences, mostly in terms of tone. I'd go so far as to call comparisons like "[INSERT AAA GAME]-killer" unfair; they set an unrealistic bar, and they imply connections that might not actually exist. In summary, devs should advertise their games on their own merits, and buyers should judge their potential purchases accordingly.
@captainweekend52766 жыл бұрын
The issue is the games never market themselves as "TF2 killers", that's a label that the TF2 community puts on any game that is remotely similar. The WoW did something similar for a time, with every new MMO coming out being labelled a "WoW killer" despite most never marketing themselves as much.

Overwatch has been on a constant player decline way before fortnite came out. Some time ago a /v/ user leaked Overwatch's player statistic-ish thing (like steamspy). Their clam of having "over one million players" is true only in a small part. They do have a million registered players, but it's only a quarter of them that are active players.

Sooo you just gonna ignore Paladins? It’s literally the the other of the two TF2 inspired games that are still alive today. It’s also had the most updates and player retention between the two (although it started with a much smaller initial playerbase than OW), it did a good job at retaining those players and it still get around 20k daily users on steam, that’s not even counting console numbers or Switch numbers where they are doing great because they are the only hero-shooter on the Switch.
