The funny thing is the comics and lore even state how worthless the gun is, in the gun mettle comic.

Isn't this lore bit purely because the unique weapons in general are so common, that Mann Co. literally gives them away to clear inventory? This is even emphasized by the "A Visual History" comic where soldier's shovel literally burned him, which extends into the idea that this stuff is literally junk.

I honestly love this thing. Its unique mobility options feel super rewarding to me. I usually pair it with the Flying Guillotine, trying to land the Guillotine first while the enemy is close, then brap them with the FaN. I personally started using it because I was just getting tired of playing "Vanilla" scout with the scattergun and really just wanted to change things up, and as I said, I fucking love the thing.

The Force a Nature is the heavy killer and movement menace, especially on maps like 2fort where it seems that every elevation was meant to be used with a FAN-jump.

What I find even funnier is that in the comics they even admit it sucks because Miss Pauling says "we have so many of those useless force of nature shotguns we're building chairs in tables from them and successfully selling them"

I think it's also worth mentioning that while the knockback allows for higher jumps, it also fucks up your momentum when shooting an enemy while jumping.

The force of nature (in my opinion) was designed for flanking, when you can get BEHIND the enemy and knock them straight into the arms of YOUR team, so they can finish an opponent off, but it's just my opinion, and hey, if you want a better force a nature, sodda popper exists

@@chiefbalupa5256 you're playing scout. A class that is one shot to most anyways. So the main issue is to dodge better than you usually need to.

I personally combo the Force of Nature with the Fan O'War. Sneak up behind enemy lines, hit someone once with the Fan O'War, and before they can even turn around, blast them with two mini crit shots. Comes at no risk to yourself since the Fan O'War doesn't make you take extra damage.

Okay but why would I not pair minicrits with the soda popper? Better mid-ranged damage, close range damage losses are negligible with the two shot thing, you reload faster, same faster firing speed, no issues with knocking enemies away from you causing decreased damage, you can shoot people while airborne since you do not knock yourself back, the quintuple jump helps you dodge better and thus more easily circumvents the marked for death downside in open areas. For a weapon meant to be a broken down force a nature with duct tape, somehow its a better version than its fixed counterpart.

I really love the knockback mechanic on it. Not only does it make the weapon iconic, it's also incredibly fun to use and makes you feel extremely powerful. The ability to send someone flying far back in one shot makes you feel unstoppable. And the mobility is another great draw to the weapon.

The knockback can sometimes allow a follow up shot to be easier because Scout can close the distance fast, and a target knocked around up on a wall can make the second shot easier if they can’t move and are shook. Edit: Typo

@@chiefbalupa5256 He made a typo, he put "walk" instead of "wall." Basically, if the knockback sends the enemy into a wall it makes following up with a second shot easier.

The knockback is super funny to me, and honestly, I ain’t that good with all classes anyway so I just do it for fun more than anything, usually just holding m1 with this thing fires the two shots consecutively much more quicker than stock make sure to even if not kill the guy, I’ll be a good chunk of damage, so most classes will dip if you shot like 70% of the shots, plus I find it hilarious to fire it to a med-heavy combo and see the medic panic and rapidly go back to his heavy that was pushed half the map back I do not get consistent kills but boy is it satisfying once you get consistent meatshots

I’ve always thought a very good fix for the Force-a-Nature is having it only apply push force on the second shot. You still keep its mobility just by using the second shot instead, and it even makes sense that if you are out of ammo and your enemy is still alive, you want some space to reload.

As someone who's reached epic on my FAN, I second this easy. I use the launch to make space while I reload, before going back in for more burst damage. Asides from rare cases against a demoknight or pyro having pushback on only the first shot would be a fine change.

Damn this is like the worst thing I ever read. In an open area your objective is to force jump to sneaky places, in a closed area, hit a good first meat shot and you basically stun an enemy against a wall for the most free second shot ever created.

@@swagguy7515 I mean, it does have +50% firing speed, you only have to start shooting sooner. Either way, another way it could be fixed, is to have the secondary fire shoot the gun, but with knockback, and primary without. Then you would have absolute control over it.

@@AlextheLordofFire that sounds pretty good, because one of the problems with the force of nature is that you can't really shoot it mid air without screwing yourself over. it'll probably be unwieldly to use at first but people will get the hang of it

I have a rebalance idea for this. Since the knockback makes it harder to chain shots together, what if it only did knockback on an alt-fire mechanism. Basically upon pressing alt-fire it would shoot all remaining shots in the clip and this one would do knockback. This would make it so if you want to troll people on sawmill or upward you could still do knockback but you can be more consistently effective.

I think this is a particularly good idea, the ability to choose when to use its push force allows you to maximize damage output, and create space when you need it, such as when you're out of ammo!

I used to enjoy FAN with sandman to abuse the relatively predictable arc you send the enemy at - and I was super excited when they added the flying guillotine. Was it a worse combo than just spamming scattergun? Yeah, but damn was it fun to knock heavies into the air to line up a sandman stun into crit guillotine.

I prefer to use Mad Milk with the FAN. The slightly higher burst damage and fast double shot makes for an extremely fast burst of healing. The knockback also allows you to get your enemy away from you and have essentially free healing.

So basically a FaN with the 10% damage penalty and knockback removed would be the perfect power shotgun we want. Maybe with a longer reload to balance it more and you're set. I'd honestly be fine with the soda popper getting the knockback instead and turning it into the full-on wacky movement gun while keeping the FaN as the burst damage shotgun.

there are four things the fan has going for it. first is that it can push enemies who are a bit too close for comfort. second is that it can push people onto hazards. third is that you can use it to get to places scout nrmally can't go even with double jumps. and fourth is that it can disorient people from their "flow" thus people using the fan and wearing the lime green colors are called scunts because of how annoying it is to get pushed around.

If they want this thing to be a burst damage god, here's an idea: Why not make it so only the second shot launches enemies? You'll tear through light classes and leave soldiers fending for their lives.

I've always wondered how much better the gun would be if the knock back applied to the second shot instead of the first one. Sure, you'd be delaying that on-demand movement a bit, but you wouldn't be immediately blasting your target out of range.

Effort is right, I think due to my full time job with inconsistent hours, learning animation in Garry's mod, and the general annoyances of animating inside the color room of gm_construct, it took me almost a week to do the first 2 1/2 minutes. XD Thank you for noticing! :)

As someone who only uses the Force-a-Nature, this definitely does make you worse at the normal Scattergun. I can no longer use the normal Scattergun because it just doesn't feel right, the reload takes too long, I can't knock people away, etc.

Also as an average enjoyer of Pass Time, the knockback can be pretty helpful for keeping the jack away from the goal. And as an average enjoyer of x100... this thing is really good there

Imagine they added an extra barrel and it was an alt fire soo when you deal your knockback shot you can follow up with a long range single shot this does exist in a weapon called the luftwafer drill of however its spelt

this things best attribute is the vertical mobility, I think. And, its on demand, and you don't have to jump multiple times. It's amazing for escapes, since you can go from a full sprint, directly up onto an above ledge. and if you fall far enough, you can shoot backwards and down to cancel the falling speed into horizontal speed. So on flatter maps without high spots to jump its definitely not a great option

The force a nature is for pushing enemy’s and yourself, it rewards position picture this your behind enemy lines and there’s a huge battle at the middle of the map if you find a player that’s carrying the team then push them towards your teams side, they won’t have any defense no pockets and no teammates around them fully trapped by your team, the force a nature can also help you reach these positions if your trying to insult this weapon at least show it’s strengths and show why people even use it.

Honestly if the FaN was to get buffed in any way, I think allowing it to mini crit slowed targets and extending the duration of that little bit of slow that happens when you land a meat shot on someone based on how meaty your meat shot is would not only buff the FaN to be viable, but also allow it to combo with the sandman

It can currently combo with Guillotine (113+90) for an amazing combo of death and Wrap Assassin (113+40) all of which break damage thresholds, let Scout have range, mobility, and an escape tool.

I absolutely love the Force A Nature. Never was really good at Scout until I picked it up. It's funny that you mention the secondary thing, I actually like to pair it with the Bonk. My strategy usually goes- Flank around behind the enemy, cause some chaos and maybe get a couple kills, then when I realize I've pissed them off too much, I pop a Bonk and get out of there

Yeah, admittedly being an annoyance is VERY fun, but it frequently feels like it deprives me of kills I otherwise would've gotten, it just frustrates me too much. Make the most of it man! :D

pairing this with the guillotine could make it half-decent, considering the guillotine has damage ramp-up in place of fall-off and if they don't airstrafe out of the way it's a clean and easy shot another half-decent tactic could be playing a weird flank playstyle while everyone's in a big team battle, launching the enemies into YOUR backline to help your team kill them easily

To be fair the best way to play force-a-nature scout is to never delay your shots, In the example you did with the fan on tr_walkway you delayed the shots, instead when you see a target you wanna shoot, hold the mouse button down to let loose Maximum damage, usually when I play like like this after I empty my clip I end up doing around 140-160 damage (that is assuming we are both in an open space) also I like it because of that “haha I have a shotgun” meme

I love how your weapon loadout in this video is the same as my scout (although I use the three-rune blade). I know its more effective to use ANY OTHER PRIMARY but I like to be an annoyance, and this weapon loves maps with environmental hazards like cliffs. :)

That’s my biggest gripe with this weapon. Why the hell would you give up your primary damage output in exchange for mobility when both of your other weapon slots also have mobility options. You can use the Boston basher or the atomizer for a triple jump at the cost of health or set up time, or use the winger to get an on-demand but less powerful boost in your jump height. And there’s nothing wrong with using the force-a-nature, I used to use it all the time when I was a new scout a few years ago, it’s really fun, and if that’s what you are looking for, kneecapping yourself but still coming out on top in a fight in spite of that, then I wouldn’t blame you, that’s a really good dose of dopamine there. But I’ve come across so many people who adamantly defend this thing and view criticism of this thing as a personal attack it’s absurd. I remember when NotSamG gave his opinion of the force a nature when discussing scout primaries and everyone dog piled him and gave him so much shit, so much so he had to make another video on the gun itself just so that people would stop being assholes to him about it, and even then I still saw a bit of pushback afterwards. It’s like people have some sort of cult worshipping the gun, like how elmaxo tried starting one with the classic. I guess you could say everyone is a… FaN of this weapon? Ayy? No? Ok I’ll see myself out the door.

The problem i think, is that you're too intensly focused on each combat encounters, and so you're not relaxed (the way you move your crosshair is super chaotic) This gun seems to be effective when you can be relaxed, think exactly on where each pellets is going to land, being able to evaluate distances and know how to pick your fights according to the weapon you're using.

I feel like the main reason why people don't like this weapon is because they are so used to the scattergun they try to use the FaN like it, when you should use a totally different mindset when using this thing as it's pretty much a subclass (also this gun has got to be my favorite weapon in the game it is so fun)

I'm not exactly a great scout, however my inability to use the f-a-n was something I thought was just a skill issue. Learning that other people think it's a downgrade to stock is eye opening ngl

This is true. I used to play with the force of nature all the time when beginning, and I think that’s why I got so bad at aiming. It kept giving me the mindset that I had to get close and then pray my enemy was low enough health to die. But now that I’ve started using the scattergun more often, I can definitely say my aim has doubled its potential

Definitely the biggest problem with the knockback is that you can no longer shoot while jumping.

It's very possible, friend, it can make you feel like you can't secure a kill, and it causes you to gain bad habits. Try a more reliable primary, I assure you, you're not as bad as you think.

What if a secondary fire was added that fired both shots and kept the heavy knockback gimmick? Then the primary fire would have its knockback significantly reduced. Or would both shots simultaneously be too op? Some stats might have to be shifted but I don't think it's a bad idea

i personaly find the knockback fairly usefull, scince it indurse the enemies mouvement the second shot is veeery easy to land, and if they're not dead just use ur pistol (stock works best for me) they will just be a couple of hp away from death anyway, plus, pushing away heavy-hiters like Heavys, etc make it a great counter to them :p

Lately, I got an idea for a reworked version of the Force of Nature that I shared with my friends and now I would like to share it on the internet. And Idk why but I find this idea really funny and after thinking about it, I wonder why Valve didn't think of this. Basically, my idea would be to add a meter similar to the ones that the Sticky bomb launchers for Demoman have. Where you hold down M2 to charge up. My idea would be that normally, the Force of Nature shots wouldn't have the extra 20% bullets on their shots and it wouldn't have knockback once you fire an uncharged shot. So it would basically be the equivalent of a Scattergun shot but with 10% less damage and you would have 2 shots, but you would still have the faster firing speed and no knockback. But if you fully charge the meter, the meter won't go down unless you fire your next shot, which I was thinking the meter would take around 1 second to fully charge. And a fully charged shot would have the extra bullets together with the knockback. I believe this would an extra layer of complexity with the Force of Nature to when you should use this knockback to your advantage since the meter could be changed at any point even mid-battle when you're firing your primary since I think the meter will only go down once it's fully charged. In addition to my own. I thought "why not make that massive knockback that you do your enemies also affect the Scout when he uses the Force of Natura to jump"? And once I thought of this, I just busted into laughs. I don't know why, but the idea of seeing a Scout flying through the air with the Force of Nature like a rocket jumping Soldier or sticky jumping Demo just sounds so funny to me. I even imagine a secondary that is basically the mantreads but for Scout. And to be honest, the idea of seeing a Scout flying through the air and stomping a Medic by landing on top of him, one shooting it just sounds so funny to me.

You barely did any FaN jumps in this video. The escape routes and flank routes this weapon opens up is hard to see at first but it's the best aspect of this weapon for me. Soldier on a roof? Use the first shot to jump up and the second to knock him off, you'll have time to reload before he can rocketjump back up. Sniper shooting through a window? Just FaN jump through it. Annoying the enemy team and then skedaddling away by FaN jumping onto a ledge where they can't reach me while my team captures the point is a highlight of this weapon. As a rule of thumb, never EVER shoot while in the air with this weapon when fighting someone. This is a very grounded weapon in combat. The first shot is meant to fling enemies in a predictable pattern so you can use the second shot to kill them. As long as you can pair the first knockback-inducing shot with the second shot you can kill someone before they even had time to think. However, if you weren't able to kill your opponent with your two shots, jump around them like an orangatang until you've reloaded, and then you can finish them off. Basically, in combat you're only allowed to jump with the FaN when you're reloading, which is something that takes a long time to get used to, especially for scattergun mains. And yeah, fighting stock scout and heavy is objectively worse with this weapon because of it's design, but if you've got good movement you can always get the upper hand. Please try to use this weapon again, and remember to always look for places to use FaN jumps.

Yeah, I will probably make a second video to talk about this weapon, because there is some interesting tech that I was unaware of when I made this video, and in my book it's totally fine if a weapon is bad as long as it's fun to use. If they decreased spread and removed the damage penalty, it would be pretty good, I'd take a nerf to fire rate or reload to get those stats.

i think the fact that the dmg penalty is per bullet, however you get more bullets per shot (its a shotgun so each shot launches multiple bullets, duh) the knockback is something that you can get adjusted to after time, also the only true con is the lack of ammo per load, overall making it a+ tier

Right, it does fire more pellets per shot, but the damage output reduction means it only deals 8 more than stock. The increased fire rate would give it a serious edge over stock, but the knock back reduces the damage of the second shot enough that you can't two shot a Soldier I just think it's lacking.

to fix your long range issue just use the gillo and the wrap assassin. Also scunt isnt meant to fight bog groups of enemies so you "charging in" is just a intelligent issue. I might end up in a follow up "why everyone else is wrong" vid but that would actually make me happy.

Yes but it has a faster firing speed. If you actually utilize that stat you can get the second shot out before the enemy get's pushed more than a foot.

play the other way around - fan jump to get to less expected flanks - fling enemy medics up into the frontlines - blast pyros chasing you to the moon to get distance, pocket pistol to get some health back, see crater in the killfeed as you get the nearest healthpack also, try just holding m1 for double tap, it's faster than double clicking and easier imo to aim when you treat it as tracking

FaN with the Guillotine + Wrap Assassin combo is fun. How I top scored and dominated two other people with it baffled me. It was hilarious just annoying people with bleed before smacking them with pellets in their faces. It's not reliable, but that's what making getting kills with it fun lol

Another Scout main, NotSamG, brought about the issues this weapon has. The F-a-N is only useful for getting environmental kills - which is ton of fun - and disrupting the enemy lines, disorienting your foes while they fly all the way across the map, but it's unreliable for getting kills. Too bad, 'cause the weapon looks sexy af.

the thing about using the force-a-nature is that your kinda not really supposed to fight big groups of enemies, to me i see it as a "pick class" weapon, if you position yourself right you can knock enemies into walls, cliffs, and just death in general, so when you see a big group of enemies you cant fight? just run away

As someone who likes to run it from time to time , the key factor is mobility. the ability to pull out unexpected jumps and managing to surprise your enemy is the reason why me and i believe lots of people like it
