We wanted to test the best selling truck in the land for durability and reliability which meant buying a Ford F-150. But not just any Ford F-150, the most powerful and the most off-road worthy version that Ford builds.
In Episode 3 of this long-term test the 2014 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, Roman takes the truck off-road in the Colorado Rockies and gives you his take on how well Ford did in designing a pickup that can take on the sands of Baja and yet scale the mountains of Colorado as well.

The upfitters (auxiliary) switches is an add-on option and can be have on any Ford pick-up. Ford first introduced them in 2005 on their Superduties. I love working around with them. They help make installing extra electronic gears and gadgets appear factory.

Bad-ass is the perfect term for it. My boss has one and it really is impressive. Not a bad road truck either (except for that feeding it thing...). It is surprising how well mannered it is on the road. When you look at it compared to the other high end pickups the price isn't out of line and really is a better buy than the Platinum or Limited.

this is my dream car! or truck! haha i have been wanting one of these for a couple years now! i get so excited if i see one while going down the road! it wasnt until a couple weekends ago when i was privileged enough to be able to sit in one! i almost cried i was so excited! if i someday somehow am ever able to get a Ford Raptor i will be getting it lifted and blacked out! black rims, black and pink camo inside, tinted windows, black paint! black everything! i have just fallen in love with this truck! i love it so much for my 18th birthday present i asked my parents if they will take me to a ford dealership to let me hopefully drive one! thats literally all i want! i even asked if we could try to get one to take my senior pictures with but i dont know if we could pull that off! oh well! im just happy i was finally able to sit in one after so long!!!

You have to put some kind of rust protection under it and inside panels. Trucks without rust protection rust like crazy in few years. The only thing I like about Ford are their mustangs, especially the Shelby and Saleen series. Only because I'm a huge muscle car nut case. Other than that I'm a GM and Toyota guy. Silverado, Sierra, Tacoma, and Tundra are my type of trucks.

All you really gotta know is the extra width, lowering the center of gravity even with the bigger wheels (which gives you more clearance) provides for a much better ride, and, the specifically-engineered suspension for off-roading makes this what every light truck should be in the 1st place. Sure, there is a market for street-only delivery, or light, in-town construction contracting trucks, but damn, one foot off-road and this exactly what 99% of us need. Farmers, ranchers, miners, loggers, and other off-road working trucks need to be 250s at the least, 350s most often, with 450s preferred where the truck takes a pounding from snow-plowing or herk-jerky heavy pulling. Yes, this is from personal experience in farming, ranching, logging, mining, and overland pipeline construction for oil and gas companies. BTW, there is solid ice under that snow sometimes, or rocks you don't see, so, yeah, snowplowing delivers a hell of a pounding, more often than not - don't buy this for snow-plowing anywhere you might encounter something hidden - pull a fishing boat though - for sure.

Sorry but a truck like this is not de-flowered by simply driving it off road. De-flowering only occurs with paint loss and/or collision induced metal reshaping.

I wouldn't buy a raptor for either. For ~$50k I would buy a regular truck (ie f-150 xlt or Tundra SR5) amd do a long travel conversation for roughly $3,500 and still have roughly $12,000 left to mod with. Air lockers for ~$1,000, regear to 4.88s, and a supercharger. Now I have a truck that will run circles around a raptor on the street and offroad. We've seen that Ford does not warranty any thing that gets abused offroad (raptors with bent frame sections from jumping them), so you might as well do a custom job

miccheck11 Gas is cheaper than diesel in the states. Plus the engines don't sound the same. I love the sound of a diesel but I rather hear a v8 screaming back at me. I think a diesel in this truck would complicate things.

You must not know much about the 3.5 ecoboost V6. Or physics. Lighter engine=better gas mileage and performance. Not to mention with very slight modification the ecoboost will put down 450+ wheel tq and hp. I love the maniac 6.2 V8, but when you can put an engine in that weighs almost half of that plus two turbos strapped to it, pretty damn enticing option.

You can't put a diesel in an off road truck. As Dodge said it adds way too much weight to the front end. Reason why PowerWagon has a Hemi. That's not good in off road driving conditions. Plus cost would climb a few thousand on already expensive specific market trucks. All truck manufactures that create off pavement ready trucks put gas motors in them for a reason.

Won't the Toyota Tacoma Baja be more of competitor for the raptor in the terms of desert type of offroading. Of course the Raptor out power the Tacoma but Tacoma can't get stuck since it weighs less than the Raptor.

I've loved the look of the raptor forever but after owning my 08 xlt for only a year now ( bought used) I have lost all faith in ford! Overdrive gone in tranny and I never tow or load it down. Power steering going, rear plate lights don't work even with replacement bulbs, front end grinding, wheel speed sensors are toast after the sprocket thing broke and hit the sensor on both sides. It has 166000 km's on it so lemon laws won't cover me and I can't afford all these repairs so I'm screwed!

even my vw golf (rabbit in U.S) could manage that "hard" terrain I do love jeeps and trucks, I owned a 4.2L wrangler tj a while back, and I really liked it... besides the engine which was a pain in the butt - a medieval engine that was tooo thirsty. and after i owned that car. i still can't understand, why you love those oversized, thirsty petrol engines. there are out there more efficient diesel engines that have half the displacement and outperform the venerable hemi engine both in power and torque, but also in fuel economy.

They planning to put the ecoboost engine in the 2016 Raptor, There is not chance in hell that I would ever buy that Raptor. If I did it would be to take that engine out and put Windsor 427 in it. If it fits.

chris b There is no reason to change it, they could not make enough of them. Seeing 6 cylinder and not an 8 cylinder is going to turn off a lot of buyers. They can spin, slice and dice it any way the want, it will still never be the same. With fuel prices going way down the ecoboost appeal is going to fade fast.
