Just a side note for Tommy, a money shift is when you downshift into a lower gear too soon and it blows the transmission, or engine, or both, costing you money, hence, a money shift. A perfect shift into the next gear can feel like money, but it s not a money shift.

Ford really left the 90s Mustangs to the aftermarket. I mean, the Z28, TA, and Formula started with 275 HP in 1993. Ford had the 235 HP Cobra (which was probably 255 since they mysteriously lost 20 HP from their 225 HP '87-'92 Mustang) which had some guts as compared to the 205 HP '93 5.0 cars (I had a '93 GT). The '94 Mustang lineup, including the Cobra, bettered the '93 HP numbers, which Ford would never admit as the reason to down-rate the '93 in the first place. They knew the '94 hood made them use a slightly different intake which seemed to restrict power, but they 'boasted' 215 HP for the '94 and '95 Mustangs as if the cars would be faster than the '87-'93 Mustangs, which they weren't. The modular Mustangs wouldn't get really interesting until the 'Terminator' Cobra, although the mostly unavailable '95 Cobra R would have been nice to have been the 'regular' Cobra considering they spent all that money and time making the 351 street-legal for all 50 states, yet only sold 250 examples to those holding racing licenses. The 305 HP modular Cobras were finally the breath of fresh air that the Mustang needed starting in '96, leading up to the Terminator Cobra. The regular modular 4.6 engines should have been at least 250 HP by the time they were introduced, rather than relying on the aftermarket or counting on people buying the Cobras. At least in an attempt to close the gap with the run of the mill V8 Camaro and Firebirds by 1996 which were 285 HP.

Did you know, the 4.0L engine in the Jaguar was also used by Ford in the LS and Thunderbird, its the AJ26 family of engines. The Mustang V8 puts out 215 HP and 285 TQ. In comparison, the modern 3.6L in the Challenger puts out 305 HP and 268 TQ and the 3.7L V6 last in the Mustang was 305 hp and 280 lb-ft.

Really entertaining video guys, I think a lot of us love these throwback vehicle mashups. In the real world, the Mustang would have been the most reliable, endured the most amount of aggressive driving, and could be given a serious jolt of power with simple bolt-ons. You could also get parts and repairs anywhere. Plus in those days, anyone with one of these, or a Camaro or Firebird, would have been the coolest people on the block, without breaking the bank...
@sleeper.simulant73272 жыл бұрын
Not sure about most reliable. Those old Z’s with the n/a v6’s are basically unkillable, so not sure the mustang would be the most reliable. It certainly lacks by a long shot in overall quality in terms of body and chassis compared to a Nissan. Those 4.6’s are also absolute turds… the ZX isn’t fast either, but it’s not much slower, and is 1.6L smaller and down 2 cylinders… the Firebird and Camaro of that time were vastly superior in terms of performance

I am positive Ford purchased Jaguar back in 1989 for a little over 2 billion dollars. GM was trying to purchase Jaguar in the late 80's but Ford was willing to spend more. I have a 1995 Jaguar XJS 4.0L convertible and also a 1995 Corvette convertible 6 speed. Both are great cars but very different in how they drive. The XJS is very much a GT and the C4 is more focused on being a sports car. Great series as it shows how much car you can get for under $10K even in this inflated used car market we are still in. The reason I like cars from the 1990's and 2000's is that they are for the most part easy to work on at home, parts are still available and there is so much information now on how to diagnose issues that will come up when owning and driving them.

Yes, Todd E. Is correct. These enjoyable but overly silly ( they spend too much time trying to be funny, I really don't need that nonsense,at least as much). Maybe more facts ( and not so much dissing all the vehicles in one way or another with there meaningless opinions) would be nice. They missed (I.e. WRONG) the purchase of jaguar by Ford by a FULL decade! Goofballs!!! Ford purchased jaguar in the fall of 1989( a little after September, around the time jaguar had produced it's 100,000th xj6). At that Time general motors was also vying to buy jaguar, but considering the purchase price, they left Ford make the purchase. To console itself, general motors turned to Sweden and at that time purchased Saab. We all know the result of that! Ford shelled out 1.6 billion pounds to buy jaguar in 1989, and that year jaguar had only produced 43,000 cars and had only 2 production plants. The editors could also have spent more time explaining how technology advances( imagine comparing a TV bought today from one 30 years ago!), but oh well. It was still entertaining to watch, but these dudes don't hold a candle to the pros at Top Gear! By the way, I love my 04 xj8 ( x350), purchased it from a local Ford store in mint shape 7 years ago, only repair was a trunk locking actuator, bout 500 bucks. To all that responded, thanks for sharing! Cheers!!!!!

So a used Offroad H pipe ( cat delete), K&N Filter, Underdrive Pulley, 2.5" pipes with Dynomax SuperTurbo mufflers, 3.73 gears. J Mod Shift Kit ( DIY) About 600.00 total. This Vert went 17.2 and with doing all the above my Coupe went 14.7. Huge! That was before the manifold blew up and I replaced it with a PI later model which was proven dyno at the wheels a 15hp gain. So 14.2 maybe? The manifold produce a ton more mid to upper power. Threw on some Ford Racing C springs and Tokico 5 way Shocks and it handle very good. Transforms it from a 60's feel to 2010 level. That is what is great about American Muscle. If you have the know how it is cheap to go fast. Always love to have cars that cheap that blow away the high end Imports.

When it was new, the 500sl did 14.4 on the quarter mile (Motorweek). Imagine the amount of horsepower lost thru the years.

They're at high altitude as well. You'd be surprised how much that affects naturally aspirated engines

On a proper drag strip all of them are running 2 seconds quicker and 5 mph faster. That timing is sketch

Yeah my 2003 sl should have a mid 5 to 6 sec 0-60 but since live a mile above sea level it hit 60mph at 7-7.5 seconds. Ill have to try it in manual mode though

I think the 500sl was in winter or economy mode and started in 2nd gear because those cars ran high 14s at almost 100mph STOCK

My mother had a 1989 Eagle premiere. Which was basically a Renault 25. It had factory keyless entry. Before the Germans. It also had a bunch of other things that was pretty unusual for the time.

As a Mercedes tech in Texas, I've never seen a more appropriate look than Andre exiting a 90s SL-class with a leather jacket and cowboy hat. 😂🔥 And the hydraulic ram leaking should have been seen coming from a mile away. They still haven't actually fixed the weak seals either, so you'll need another one every 5-6 years 💀

Great episode guys good humor and fun . Can't wait to see toby's findings . Either way I'm sure each could use a complete tune up and retest them . That merc is under standard like the jag but with a nice exhaust and tune watch out it's a strong engine also ac off Andre come on now lol and do u brake torque them off the line ?

Taking bets! How long until that Jag breaks down?
@earlscheib77542 жыл бұрын
Those jags were pretty damn good, far better mechanically than the F type that replaced it

The only car that would last here is the Mustang and the Z.

@@angelgjr1999 - The naturally-aspirated XK's like the one in this video were quite reliable and the 2nd-generation XK X150 with the 4.2 had the best reliability in its class.
