I would love to see a dollar for dollar comparison of a UTV and a Jeep . One at $10K one at $20K and one at $30K. All for off-road capability. I already know the results. The Jeep might get through a couple bigger rock obstacles it the UTV will cover way more ground way faster in the trees and in the open.

Most people who don’t bring stuff just drive within a few miles from camp at OHV areas and usually can walk back, or find other people to lend a hand. Down here in the west coast where it’s all desert, almost everyone who goes out to secluded areas and drives far carries a spare drive belt with the tools to change it and fix a flat tire, or has a spare tire mounted, and has a rotopax gas can mounted on the rear of the cage. I always carry a spare belt, spare tire and some gas with a small ice chest with drinks and snacks, and of course a gun in my backpack for personal protection from crazy people you may come across all alone.

SxS are definitely THE way to go for off-road fun. If you're mainly looking to do trail exploring, things like Goldmine Hill or Cliffhanger, you don't need to spend 30k for a SxS I got a Kawasaki Teryx 4 LE 10 days ago for 13k by snagging an outgoing 2018 model. I've also been an owner of a Raptor for the past year and since buying the Teryx 4, I anticipate my off-road adventures in the Raptor will be limited to towing the Teryx 4 to the trail head. The thing is just so much more fun to take off road and insanely capable. Moral of the story... If you want to have the most fun off-road, buy a SxS and a vehicle capable of towing it.

Kenshin Himura well it’s not an ATV it’s a Side by Side. ATVs are quite a bit cheaper. While I agree the price for many side by sides is through the roof, I don’t agree that the off road scene is dead. If no one was buying these, companies wouldn’t be constantly putting out new products and the same or even higher price points. If you’re only going to ride a couple times a year then yeah, 13k is probably much. I’ve owned my Teryx 4 for less than 3 weeks and I’ve taken it out on the trails 3 times. I will definitely be getting my monies worth out of this thing.

Meh... It just doesn't compel me to run down to the local dealer and spend that kind of money. Knowing how these are all put together I would much rather run out and buy a used purpose built rig in the same price range. Hell half the people that buy these things wind up dumping another 20K+ in after market to get It the way they want. The other thing that is starting to look familure is what happened in the PWC industry quite a while ago. Prices climbing higher, more toy like add on's and no real changes to the meat and potatoes! Not hate'n I just think it's a lot of coin for what it is that's all.

Sea doo did an amazing job with the spark. its almost regro. small fun and affordable.

@@kenshinhimura9387 I sell at least one $35k side by side a week. The rest of the week I consistently sell $10k-$25k ATVs and side by sides. Its a fast growing scene that needs to be experienced to be appreciated and understood. Many people finance recreational vehicles, not just morons. When you ride a 30k side by side how it should be ridden and compare it to a 13k side by side or 30k truck there simply is no comparison. The 30k side by side takes the cake. I think far more people are going to be out on those trails, because of SXS's, experiencing state/national parks and the natural beauty, scenery, etc than were able to before because they can safely and confidently get to them without the need/expense of grooming and paving thousands of miles of fire roads etc for regular automobiles to be able to use them. More people having access to and appreciating those places is good for all of us. I just hope the boom in traffic comes with a culture of good stewardship.

I'd be willing to bet that SXSs had more to do with the decline in ATV sales -- same tech required, but the SXS offers more comfort and security with modest material cost increase. Of course those increases can be a lot more than modest if you opt for extra capabilities, but base 2 seat SXS models are basically the same price as a top end ATV. I would say that today's question is going to be who can better capture potential offroad sales in the 20-30k range, SUVs or SXSs? Will people feel more comfortable beating a SXS like that and putting it on a trailer to go home, or do they need one vehicle to do both parts, getting there and offroading? Can they tolerate the driving/comfort qualities of an offroader as an every day driver too, or do they split those duties between two purpose oriented vehicles? The auto manufacturer's honestly don't seem to be trying very hard to capture that sub-30k market with capable utilitarian models, leaving it wide open for the SXSs.

For us it was a pretty easy decision. Over the last 15 years we've done jeeps, blazers, and even an old school sand rail. In the end the razor was really a no brainer. They ride better and get more places than I could ever care to go in a jeep or blazer, and do it in half the time. A trip in one of our jeeps that typically took 2 hours I can do in 45 minutes with the Razor. Saves us a ton of time to do more things while we're out off roading. Quite frankly our jeeps and blazers were way more expensive and I felt too nice to abuse heavily off road anyway. The other decision maker for us is that these Razors are street legal here in AZ so it's really a dual purpose vehicle. We use it to run to the store, my wife drives it to work nearly daily, it gets 22-23 mpg no matter how you drive it, and yet we also enjoy it all over the mountain ranges AZ has to offer. Worth every penny.

I have both a CJ 5 and a CJ -7 that were less then $5000 each and are both highway legal , more off road capable and also had warn 8274 winches on them as well. There is no legitimate reason for paying $30,000 + for something that doesnt do anything that cant be accomplished for a fraction of its price. And a clean classic Jeep CJ is just far cooler anyway

I know these are fun and all but not too much more money you can pick yourself up a nice used Jeep or even a new Jeep don't know,I think one day the markets going to fall out of these. The RZR has more technology in it than a Jeep. I’m assuming your putting value on it being streetable? Get a on road kit for a $$ and register it as a OHV and you have a lot better bang for buck then a Jeep

You think Polaris has a mouthful nomenclature, look at Can Am. They have a Can-Am Maverick X3 MAX X rs Turbo R. Very different from the Can-Am Maverick X3 X DS Turbo R, which is different from the Can-Am Maverick X3 Max X MR Turbo R. Don’t ask me what those differences are. Their marketing guys are idiots.

30000$ Polaris? That's how much my one year old 5.0 f150 was. I understand it's a toy but you will have to do much more to impress the millennials. Us you tube kids could build something that would blow the doors off of this for half the price. Just KZbin it lol. Polaris used to be a good company. Anyways enough ranting and back to the garage I go.

Nice review. I enjoy the off-road content. I just got back from riding windrock in Tennessee. Took a Yamaha Viking. On the way home I stopped to shop a more trail oriented rig. Really liked the Polaris 1000 xp 4. Only thing that worries me though is quality issues. The plastics were a bit shoddy with poor finish and fitment. Looking underneath the wiring looks like a rats nest and structure looked rough finished with signs of rust on the brand new rigs. Capability wise I was VERY IMPRESSED though. Lots of travel. ROOMY. I’m 6-6 340 and I was real comfortable. And the powder is impressive. I’m gonna sleep on it a while longer before trading in for an XP 1000.

This is ridiculously affordable for what it does. And it is 100% street legal and daily driver here in Lake Havasu city Arizona. In a place where in every single direction you can hit an insane desert mountain trail, this is totally what it's about I can't think of much better than this. this is why these are one of the most common vehicles on the road here. No trailer is needed.

how much does it weigh? what kind of MPG does it get? surprised to see that the CVT transmision could handle that off road, compared to the CVT in the subaru outback

You don't need to say the weight in kilograms for Canadians. I'm Canadian and haven't met anyone who use kilograms. We are a confused country we use pounds not kilos but use grams instead of ounces and mix using inches and feet with meters and centimeters for length measurements.

Next 6 months is great but for Colorado that's a lot of either very cold snow riding or waiting for spring, maybe we will see you on the trails as the wife an I are riding just about every weekend some place in this beautiful state.

I'm curious about something.... Can one buy a base model and just build one up to have the same suspension travel as the S? Can it be done simple or a crap ton of money not making it cost effective?
