The trick with the G80 is when it locks in you need to keep the torque applied or it disengages and you have to start all over again. Maintain a crawl speed, or greater, and it will stay locked it. Soon as you let off the gas or stop , you’ll have to spin it up all over again. Would be great if you could show it camera.
@goldentrichomeshydro4260 Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't that be a limited slip then? Makes no sense when it's advertised as locking differentials.
@terrencejones9817 Жыл бұрын
@Golden Trichomes Hydro no, search KZbin on how the G80 works. A limited slip never fully locks and only transfers some power, and relies on the clutches to slip. The G80 while having clutches uses a mechanical locking mechanism that fully locks the axles together, but it will only stay locked with load applied.
@k0pper Жыл бұрын
Yeah if you've ever driven a Toyota with ATRAC (yes I know it's a very different system) you kind of want to run the G80 the same way, smooth, consistent throttle with just enough to get over the obstacle. With both systems you get better with them the more you use them and understand the input they need to do their thing.
@terrencejones9817 Жыл бұрын
@k0pper There is a bunch of older TFL videos where Andre and Nathan use too much throttle and can ever get the G80 to lock. Then Tommy crawls right up thlse Razor rocks no problem in the old TFL Trailboss, he figures out how to use it.

Like any novice, you’re giving the G80 a bad name. The G80 works fine, if you know how it works - get it locked in and power through, don’t let up…. The G80 has been around for years because it works at any speed, in any gear, 2WD or 4WD, no buttons to push, simple and cost effective. A little tire spin is fine, get it locked and stay in the throttle.

Great job! I did not think that truck would make the razor rocks. I still remember that time with a 4Runner and a selectable(sp?) locker and that tree! Not good. Obviously, tire grip and sideways slip come into the equation, more so when not airing down. As for that G80, pros and cons. Y'all probably think I am crazy mentioning the pros. But I had one in an 83(!!!!) S10 Blazer, and though it was a rattle trap, that thing was an amazing little off roader. Pros: cheaper. Super reliable with an incredibly long history. Always going to kick in and then it becomes a 100% mechanical locker. No switches or compressors to worry about. Those are also very reliable, but let's face it, just more things to go wrong. The major con: well, you demonstrated that repeatedly. Probably/maybe better for the mud pit than for slow rock crawling. Oh, did I say it already? Cheap!
@hochhaul Жыл бұрын
I avoid the "con" by getting the G80 locked up ahead of the terrain I need it for. I find a section of road with dirt or mud, goose the throttle enough to break the rear tires loose, and now the G80 is locked up and stays locked up as long as I don't exceed 30 mph or drive in reverse.
@monocogenit1 Жыл бұрын
I actually really liked this truck, but the wheels are pretty ugly, and the cost/wait and potential reliability issues after 5-10 years of ownership is what made my decision for the Nissan pro4x. Isn't it 25lbs of boost?? Imagine that at 100k plus miles. Lol plus I got a real looker for about $6k less.
@stevevice9863 Жыл бұрын
If that is a Torsen type limited slip, you can brake lightly with your left foot as you are applying the gas when you get wheel spin, and it should send power to the tire with traction. I just looked up the G80 and it works on centrifugal force opening up a mechanism that catches and locks the diff when wheel spin gets to 120 rpm rather than the locking spiral gears used in a Torsen type diff. Torsens were used in the old Hummers. So never mind about the left foot braking. The G80 does have a rather sudden lockup so it would be impossible to engage it smoothly.
@hochhaul Жыл бұрын
For the guys that have experience with the G80 it's pretty easy to use it. Before reaching terrain where tires lift off of the ground, you can lock it simply using the throttle. Let's say you're driving on dirt, give the truck enough throttle to break the rear tires loose, causing the locker to lock. Now that it's locked and as long as you don't exceed approx 25-30 mph or drive in reverse, the G80 will remain locked. Now you don't have the jarring lockup that they complained about.
@capesquirt Жыл бұрын
Yeah. That's a great way to engage it,however when you reduce power/throttle, it will disengage, until wheel spin again, and on and off it goes. I have had them,and still do,currently 2010 Tahoe. Much prefer a quality limited slip,like Aurburn or air locker.
@hochhaul Жыл бұрын
@@capesquirt the g80 only unlocks if you either reach speeds greater than ~30mph or you drive in reverse. Letting off the throttle doesn't unlock it.

@@hochhaul the video your commenting on is proving you wrong...
@hochhaul Жыл бұрын
@Henry Strater the video you are watching is heavily edited and the driver is using poor technique. I have owned more vehicles with a G80 than I care to admit. I know how they fcking work you dunce. Once it's locked it's fcking locked until you drive fast enough to unlock it or you drive in reverse. Sometimes that makes a G80 a PITA when you want it to unlock (winter driving in town) and there are limited opportunities to drive fast enough or drive in reverse to get it unlocked. Letting off the throttle does NOT unlock it.
@JakeCam1969 Жыл бұрын
If you deflate the tires (or "air them down") you will have significantly more traction = less wheelspin. Assuming that your normal road pressure is about 35 psi, I wouldn't do this terrain with more than 20 psi max. In fact, I'd probably do 15 psi - on an empty vehicle. With a load you're probably going higher pressure. Remember, an ounce of traction = a pound of momentum.

My colorado came with 33s, they would make this trail much easier for this canyon
@mrvwbug4423 Жыл бұрын
The AT4 has those same 33s as an option, along with better skidplates, but their test truck lacks those options.

Not having lockers come standard on these insanely expensive trucks is ridiculous. My wife has a 2022 Colorado 4x4 with no lockers and it was $40k cash without a dealer markup.

Im really impressed by the autolocker. That is a real off-roader by virtue of doing that rock climb, out of the box. imagine what real off road tires could do. But why not a button that just engages those aoto lockers ASAP so there's less slipping--- only 1% would use it, but...

The G80 is designed for street and offroad. With it locking automatically in whether in 4x4 or 2wd makes it the all around option for less than super serious offroaders. In the snow or partially slick roads it kicks in before someone could even reach for the switch plus a lot of electric offroad selections only allow it for 4low which sucks.

Pit Vipers would’ve made it smoother for you ;), jk prob some better tires would help. People who leave trash suck, but at least it wasn’t a Bud Light.
@mrvwbug4423 Жыл бұрын
NIce part is, better tires are an option box away. The AT4 can be optioned with the same 33in Territory MTs that the Trail Boss gets.

If you know how to control your foot rhat woild go just fine. Experience is key as well

Looks good maybe if you swap out tires you won’t struggle as much

Dang near my perfect truck, just needs proper AT tires or even MT. If it had the 3.0l diesel it’d be the Absolute perfect truck

Super good looking truck

yea the "auto" locker is sort of lame in the way you have to get tires spinning for it to kick in but its better than nothing and will get you unstuck
@robhtwo Жыл бұрын
How about checking it's "limit" with the off road tires it's optioned with? All Terrains just slip on rocks. This one is equipped for a mall crawl. lol...
@jackcycling44035 ай бұрын
Did all that without the optional real off-road tires.

You need to just commit to smooth throttle and not let off by reflex and the G80 works wonders. It becomes new muscle memory☺️

We wont even see the AT4X/ZR2 till 2024 at this point. My ZR2 has been bumped from May to July, so bumped a few times with no hope in sight.

Definitely not a rock crawler. Rock dragger, sure.

We want all the TFL staff to stay safe so they can keep producing great and informative content for to enjoy. A couple safety observations. 1). 8:35 Shortly after climbing the razor rocks the camera man, Kase, started walking in front of the truck. The driver, Alex, started accelerating with some wheelspin. Had the G80 kicked in unpredictably there was some potential for Kase to get injured, even if it was simply falling on the rocks while trying to get out of the way. Worst case could have be broken arm, broken ribs, broken shoulder blade, and or fractured skull. 2). 12:12 Alex was tucking his thumbs inside the steering wheel. This is advised against while offroading because many a thumb and/or wrist have been broken by the steering wheel turning suddenly and grabbing the wheel.

1. It’s impossible to tell how close he actually was. 2. Experience 👍🏻
@The_Opinion_of_Matt Жыл бұрын
@@garysarratt1 Experience and movement tells me he was within 4 feet from the front of the truck and likely about 3 feet from the front. Don't assume that because you don't have knowledge and experience that others don't. That is one of the big things wrong with this country.

@@chaosseat While I hate me some safety nazis, your dismissive comment reads as the true Karen. You aren't worth the time and energy to interact with more. But then I know you will reply because that is what you get off on. Insulting and tearing others down to make yourself feel better about your sad, pathetic life. I'm certain your parents bought you an Xbox because you ruined their lives and they wanted you to hide in your room so they wouldn't have to be reminded of your existence.

@@The_Opinion_of_Matt I’m not assuming anything; I said it’s impossible to tell. You’re assuming 3 feet, without knowing the field of view or post cropping that may have been done, or you may be correct. You are still assuming you know, which is the biggest thing wrong with this country today 🙄. Also, where is your watchful eye on all the other videos, on the many channels? This shot is not uncommon at all. And I don’t think Roman would send these guys to do this alone if he doubted their competence, safety awareness and maturity. And when I said 2. Experience, I was referring to the steering wheel technique. Clearly they haven’t had a lot of experience with non-power steering, or that technique would be habitual. After the first whack, he’ll know how to hold the wheel when off-roading.

For a off road labeled pickup, the lack of travel/articulation from the IFS combined with the G-80 just makes a bad combination..
