Was on Imogene two weeks ago and right after the split to Yankee Boy and Imogene we were stopped for a while by some guys working. They said that they were filming a commercial on tires up ahead on the trail and that we would have to wait a few minutes. When they let us go we went up the trail a little ways and they were actually filming a Subaru commercial testing the new Outback. They tried to cover them up but you could plainly see them and besides come on, it’s a Subaru. Nobodies getting excited to get a first look 😂

Two things I've learned by watching dedicated overlanders on KZbin that I think this great video bear out - you use whatever vehicle you've got to get out there and explore as far as it will take you and bigger tires are not always better.

I recently went from a 2018 Colorado ZR2 to a 2020 Ram 1500 Rebel, I've done some Colorado mountain passes with the ZR2 and it did fine. The Rebel is likely to handle them fine too, granted I may have to do a 3 point instead of a 2 point going around some of the switch backs. But here's one thing that I found that disappointed me with the Rebel. Some of the brain dead electronics. For instance going backwards the front sensors are active so it beeps for the car parked in front of you. In the ZR2 if you were using Apple Car Play and disconnected it would reconnect with BlueTooth and continue playing your music or podcast, same thing when you got back in the truck. The Rebel, it hunts for a bit and then uses the Radio, it even does that if you were using BlueTooth to play. It would be useful if you went through and did a comparison of the electronics in some of these since you spend probably more time using them than you do off road. I know you do cameras, which I still don't understand why they aren't even an option on the Rebel, which is useful, but it would be cool to see a comparison of the different systems used by each of these companies.

Took my kids and some of their friends out west for 6 weeks going from Arizona to Montana wild camping most nights and they loved it. (about a decade ago) If you can take your time traveling anywhere in the USA you can find awesome places to go, out west has a lot more open camping though. I am glad you are getting out there and doing something, safely. Stay safe and healthy and hug the little guy, he has to be up to 50 pounds by now.

Back in the mid-90's I took my '88 F-250 4x4 carrying with it a narrow width custom camper up through Imogene Pass. Having left from the Telluride side of the pass, the road was a narrow ribbon in some sections with barely enough room for vehicles to pass each other and with no turnaround until your reach the old mining quarry. The road passes through a tunnel and I thought I wasn't going to make it past it. Luckily it was a pop-top camper and I had sufficient room to get through past it otherwise it were to be a long way back to Telluride in reverse using just the side mirrors keeping me between the mountain on one side and a shear drop to the other. Having left Telluride a little late that morning, I just made it to the top of the pass just before sunset. I only had 10 minutes to revel in the view before the sun dipped below the peaks. Further along as it got dark it got harder and harder to spot where the road went due to the truck hood blocking my view of the road. The headlights just shot out into a dark void. The road dipping up and down was so bad I often had to step out of the truck to just see the road! Despite this being early July, there was still a snow pack in some parts and in the darkness I got lost and took a wrong trail into what can pass for a glacier field. Eventually I realized this couldn't be the route so I had to back out in reverse in the dark back to the fork in the road. That took me a *long* time of stepping in and out of the cab to get a fix on the road and having made it to the main road thereafter it became many further hours of driving in the dark on the Ouray side of the pass. Dead tired, I threw in the towel and camped out right there on the jeep trail. It was cold and being exposed to the elements above the tree line it made for very windy sleepless night. The spot where I camped can be seen as a sharp curve in 12:19 of the video. Despite it all, I was rewarded the next morning by the most spectacular view of the valley below. The trail was still slow going but I eventually came down from the mountain crossing that stream seen in the video and creeping down a rock shelf road and making the rest of the way on a forest road. I'd do it all again. The only thing different I'd change is to leave for Imogene pass from Telluride at the crack of dawn instead of late-morning.

I lived outside Telluride for a couple of years, and this video has me really missing that area. I took my bone stock 1999 F-250 SD 4x4 (super cab, long bed) over Imogene many times. Such a beautiful ride.

Great video guys. I saw some comments about how unfair it is that the Trail Boss has not gotten any attention with upgrades and such to make it better off-road but I for one appreciate what you are showing us with the Trail Boss. I see a vehicle that does not NEED any of those upgrades and while they would be nice it has done everything you have asked of it with no major issues. It is the truck that most of us GM guys will buy (5.3 with decent options) and really most of us will keep it stock for the first few years of ownership. During that time it will do really most anything you would need without a problem. Maybe calling it a BOSS is a bit of a stretch, but is is certainly the grunt you need working for you that just works away quietly not asking for anything other than gas in return. Thanks guys!

It may not have all the off road gear but it seems to get the job done every time. It's also one of the most affordable trucks out there for off road. Not saying it's the best but you have to give chevy some props.

Great video, but there should have been more scenes of the downhill part--which is where my expectation was there would be trouble with your long wheelbase.

I did this trail in my stock 2000 F150 with open front and rear diffs,it was a bit challenging in some areas for sure, but I've been over this pass many times, it's definitely easier coming from the Telluride side down into Ouray

Just watched ya video. Enjoyed it. Living here in New Zealand, i have no idea where that trail is in colarado. It does look good tho. Would like to see you guys bring some of ta vehicles here to nz and do some of ya tests here on our roads and off road tracks. That is of course IF ya had the money to do so.

Tommy, word of advice from the older set, please don’t sit on that wallet all day. It’s an eventual road to misery for your hips, glutes and back. We’re talking surgery in 30 years.

Are planning on doing any suspension upgrades? I bought a 2020 Silverado Custom crew cab. I purchased the Eibach pro truck lift kit. It comes with adjustable front struts new coil springs and a set of rear shocks for 589.00. I haven’t done any off-roading. The overall ride in my opinion has improved over stock and it’s leveled without any spacers.

Did Imogene several years ago in my 2002 Dakota QuadCab and it handled the pass nicely. Only scraped once heading down the mountain. Never saw any full sized trucks, just lots of Tacomas. I remember this particular pass because right at the beginning there was a 90 year old guy and his granddaughter in relatively new Jeep Renegade and they were stuck in the middle of the road because they couldn't get over an obstacle. I offered to help and got in their Jeep and looked over the 4x4 options like "Sand, rock, snow, etc" and couldn't get the thing to move properly. After some more investigating I realized they had their e-brake on which in those vehicles is a tiny little plastic switch. They took off and kept going and I assumed they made it over to the other side as we didn't see them stuck again.

Beautiful scenery. My only comment is that it is much too busy, I would have thought you two would be the only ones up there instead there is a circus. That road is busier than my hwy.

FYI that was the GLRE off-road crew in the Raptors at the end. Mine was the black one with the white fenders. @patriot.raptor on IG and KZbin. We had an absolute blast on Imogene pass. However I’m pretty sure the Jeeps weren’t real happy we were there 😂😂. Wish I would’ve recognized you guys, would have loved to stop and chat.

Its trucks like the ram rebel and chevy trail boss/ gmc at4 that are the best full size off road trucks. They are still enough truck to do work but also rugged enough off road for what you need outside of jeep rock crawling.
