Eddeville303 if you remove some of those luxury features and think of this as a commercial vehicle test, ram won with slightly better mpg and the air bag suspension to level out the back. If your reason to purchase one of these and your choice is 100% work related then Yeah the ram. But if those luxury features are important, the Ford. I love a good competition. However if you need to haul 30klb daily I wonder if a class 4 truck would be better. *shrugs*

Hey fellas, I love these head to head tests y'all do. Always answer 90% of my questions, at least. Just a couple points I found annoying and thought I'd mention. 1 - DEF does not give you power, guys. It doesn't even go through the engine. These trucks use what's called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to control NOx emissions. This is achieved by spraying DEF in the exhaust where it will react in the catalyst. 2 - The exhaust brakes on these trucks are one and the same with the turbo. Nowadays, they all use Variable Geometry Turbos. To achieve braking, they close the vanes which also increases exhaust volume as it spools up the turbo. Last, if I buy a RAM, I'll be looking into the Pacbrake Load Leash. Pretty cool stuff. Probably would decend super Ike with no brakes because it changes the valve timing to maximize the effect of the exhaust brake.

It may be detuned but it also has much less drivetrain loss at the wheels. I'd like to see the actual HP and torque difference at the wheels.
@alexsmba6 жыл бұрын
js9234 it doesn’t matter, they don’t perform anywhere near as well as the automatics. Diesels do really well with automatics. If you are driving it empty, you will use 2nd to get going, then 4 slow long shifts to get to 6th (compared to a car) and you will be in 6th by 35mph (unlike a car). Anything over that, and definitely over 40mph, there are no more gear shifts. Then you’re doing higher rpm on the highway, when you wish the rpms would drop like the automatic. So it’s way slower accelerating. Not as nice on the highway, and you don’t really get the opportunity to enjoy shifting like you do with a sports car, through the corners because you won’t be downshifting on those roads.

@AngelHernandez-tq5ov6 жыл бұрын
Oh ok thanks.
@keithm87156 жыл бұрын
Angel Hernandez def fluid is not used for the regeneration process. Def is used only to break down NOX into nitrogen and oxygen in the SCR. Previous trucks without def/scr but had dpfs regenerated. Regeneration is done with excesse fuel injected directly into the exhaust to burn out the resedue in the soot-cooker (DPF) filter.

Bought a 18 ram 3500, coming from the legendary 7.3. I've always driven Ford's. 7 main bearings on the Cummins vs 5 on the powerstroke. One main bearing sits between each connecting rod. Tons of grunts, with fewer moving parts. I drive the Cummins. It's going to outlast the stroker hands down. Look under the hood. The Ford looks like a rat's nest. The Cummins is clean and easy to work on without pulling the cab. That's the seller for me.

How to break a truck: put 30k pounds behind the shitty frame that these geniuses make over an extended period of time. Last good pickup ever built was 2016 ford with the thick and classic C channel frame. It doesn't matter that ram and ford can tow more. All 3 frames are made out of super thin shit steel that collapses/rusts away once you put it under pressure. Whoopie. My truck can tow 30k pounds. Guess what my truck can do! Theleglessdemon there probably just about as equal. I got a 97 7.3 powerstroke with 4:10s and a 5 speed and my brother has an 02 5.9 Cummins with 4:10s and a 6 speed and I’d say they pull really close to equal on all the hills around where I live. His might out pull mine a bit but it is 5yrs newer too with around 60k less miles than mine. We’re running close to 20k loaded with gravel in a dump trailer which is what the trucks are rated for. Just my two cents. Would be cool if they did a video on it too tho I agree with you

At over 80k to purchase and fuel mileage still around 2-3mph.... I mean at this point a semi makes a lot more sense
@artillerybuff20006 жыл бұрын
RGJ58 you may have something there! However, towing a 15k 5th wheel with my RAM I average 9 to 10 on most trips which for me includes a combination of flat towing and mountains. They got 2-3mpg towing 30k up a killer hill, nothing gets good mileage doing that, but when you average it with real world weights (for most of us anyway) with real world driving they do pretty well; and yes the prices are crazy! Your only hope is to get at least 250,000 miles out of them which should be no problem...
@rgj58326 жыл бұрын
artillerybuff2000 very good point, I guess in a rush to judgment it is in fact basically petal to the floor up a 7 percent grade or something like that they said. So if your getting the mileage you report it’s not nearly as bad. My thinking at the time was wow you can tow double maybe triple what they have loaded and still get 3-4 mph with a semi.
@cameronlund16745 жыл бұрын
This is literally the harshest test to put these through so 2-3 mpg is not normal by any means
@cheezwhiz12345 жыл бұрын
Real world price with an msrp of 80k is about 62k. The only thing when working any of these pickups hard, in the heat, is the rear differential. All these manufacturers have stepped up their power to semi-like levels, but still run 11.8-12" ring gears, and these diffs get HOT! Oil goes into thermal runaway. I have monitored pinion bearing area temps on an 11.8 AAM and saw 300 deg at one point. Black asphalt, hot sun, minimal airflow, and heavy loads.

They all got switched out for Ram 5500's. No issues after 3 years.

Yet you ignore real word experience. How is it more modern when it's interior and ride quality is behind the RAM. These are called modern tech, it seems your definition is limited to gadgets. Oh and those messaging seats with eventually break down. Next we have the Engine and there is no competition there. The Cummins diesel with out last that Ford. Far as I can see they both offer additional advantages in different areas. Oh and then you have to deal with the reliability of the Ford made transmission while the RAM gives you the Japanese AISIN tranny that is tried, tested and true. The Chevy 3500 Duramax was wonderful right up until the injectors failed and GM refused to honor their warranty; will NEVER own another GM product again. The Ford F450 was wonderful until it started leaking oil and required the entire truck to be disassembled to repair, i.e. very costly, then the injection system failed requiring another expensive disassembly (cab removal, what a stupid design). Of couse this was also just a few miles out of warranty! Currently own a 2018 Ram 3500 with max tow package and so far it is a beast! Zero issues so far towing a very heavy 5th wheel RV for 2+ years now. It is a real joy to drive, best overall truck by far. All of these trucks can easily do the work, but at $75 to $100k they really need to stay running and last a few hundred thousand miles before needing serious work and only a Cummins can do that...

The way they fill the vehicles isn't accurate, the air chamber and filler neck in all vehicles reacts differently. When you watch when they do the second click there is a huge difference in how much fuel is pumped between vehicles. Even on a 100 mile loop a 1/2 gallon can make a few miles per gallon difference.

I think all three brands of hd trucks have there pros and cons. I have been a ford guy all my life but in 2015 I traded my 15 f350 platinum for a gmc Denali 3500 drw. The gmc was definitely a better ride than my 15 f350 and I really have no complaints about the gmc. I kept it 2 years and traded it for a 17 f350 platinum drw. I pull same sundowner toy hauler with it as I did my gmc drw. The trailer is 43’ and weights about 17500 loaded. The gmc did not squat as much as the ford but with that being said the ford sets level with trailer as did the gmc. I guess it comes down to what truck fits you best and what you fill good in. I can say the technology in the ford is way ahead of what the gmc was and it works. My next truck might be a ram 3500. I can say over my years of trading trucks that I got better deal trading my ford to gm and trading my gm to ford there must be some kind of insensitive for changing brands.

Except when you remember that horsepower is an equation of Torque and rpm, essentially torque over time, because the Ford has a diesel V8 which has a lighter valve train and lighter components it can rev higher and maintain torque therefore more Horsepower, so it is a valuable measurement when comparing towing.

I have the same Ford F350 as used in this video but Black. I also have the 4;10 gear option. Im curious why they didn't use the Select shift feature and go manual. Its a world of difference. Could have pulled the hill in a lower gear. If the editing was correct the truck was only pulling 2000@10Lbs of boost. That's typical of leaving a stop light unloaded. The truck should have been tacking a good 3500 RPM @ 30Lbs boost. No doubt select shift would have gave a much faster time. Im also curious if the exhaust brake was just on or in auto mode. If in auto mode the truck wont go beyond its set speed. It will tach to 4 grand if it has to so the truck will maintain speed. In the video this truck went from 36 to 41 I think which tells me it wasn't in auto mode. Its reverse cruise control. I drive this truck every single day and pulled heavy equipment with it. The gauge readings weren't true to what I see everyday.

2.7 mpg vs 2.4 mpg is a 12.5% difference in favor of the RAM. Similar results of 10% or greater better fuel efficiency are seen in other TFL tests. I see so many"hot shot" haulers using RAMs I'm betting they know how much the fuel economy means to their bottom line. Fuel efficiency is a big thing to look at when you're buying a towing rig. Diesel trucks are about capability, efficiency and durability There are many other vehicles a person can purchase if you're looking for outright speed. A 8500lb + truck shouldn't be your first choice.
