That feigned sudden concern over safety- where **no** such concern is to be found for other vintage or collector vehicles- is my primary complaint. I don't buy their justification- that a Kei truck *specifically* is too dangerous to allow, where they have no issue with- say- an MG roadster, or a vintage 1940's motorcycle being registered and used on public roads. Bear in mind you can still- and many do, due to simpler mechanicals- operate a tractor-trailer from the eighties or far earlier, often lacking ABS, in interstate commercial use, without ABS and so forth, up to an 80K-pound gross. The amount of ire states afford Kei trucks in particular, ostensibly over safety, is laughable. Hell, I'd even be amenable to a restriction of no controlled-access roads for them, given their handling and size, but instead we just get a petulant, total refusal to title and register. They'll generally even let you title and register *other* Kei cars if they're old enough- just not a Kei *truck*. (In inquiry before deciding whether or not to purchase, they even said they would be able to register a Kei van based on the same core design, but not a Kei truck.) Politicians did not advocate for these regulations. Half of the regulations on the books were DEMANDED by your forebears to combat corporate disregard for lives or safety and corporate avarice. And the other half were demanded by corporations to protect their profits or markets and to a lesser extent to keep Americans employed so they can afford to be consumers. Pull your head out of the simplistic drivel from Rupert Murdoch. These trucks are illegal because they don’t meet collision safety standards, emission standards, or because importing them would mean Honda and other manufacturers would have to stop selling OTHER vehicles on which they make a much larger margin in the US. E.g. Audi did not sell the TT in the US in 2006 because they are only allowed a specific average of fuel economy across all their brands, and the American market wanted their eight cylinder cars more than the 3.2 six. Once more, stop blaming politicians for the fact that the PEOPLE press for greater safety and cleaner air, and the US corporations don’t want foreign car manufactures to kill the domestic car industry. Car makers like Toyota kept making their trucks bigger because that is what Americans kept BUYING. But me, I bought a Maverick the moment they were available. Smaller truck. Decent mileage. Adequate power. Seats 5. Carries 1500 lbs in a bed just the right size. A mere 30k.

Lookup CAFE regulations. There are dumb laws pushing the trucks to be bigger to avoid fuel economy targets based on the number of sq feet in a rectangle between the four wheels. We used to have small trucks like Tacoma and Ranger (in the 90's), and they cannot make them that small anymore due to US laws. This also impacts Canada since they are not going to make a vehicle for such a small market.

@clockworkbadger2363 Bigger cars aren't actually safer, what they do is they just change the dynamics of a crash. I suppose it’s all about what you call real work. I know that there really is that set of people, but basically everyone I know actually uses their trucks. I even bought a Kei truck a few years back, and almost instantly sold it. Payload capacity is like 1500lbs (at like 30kmh/20mph) including occupants. This means with two big sumbitchs in the front and 12x 80lbs bags of concrete in the back you are maxed out. Two people can mix and pour 12 bags in an hour. My F350 needs a whole pallet of concrete in the back (42 bags, about 3400lbs OR more than the weight of the whole kei truck fully laden) just to make it ride right. I can get 5 (technically 6) people and 3 pallets (126bags) of concrete to a job AND actually get it up 20% grades driveway. It gets better. On a highway trip I would get about 5-6mpg (possibly up to 8mpg if the drive was long enough). So even if the Kei truck got 40mph it would be losing the efficiency race at the 6th / of 10 trips. That’s not even including that the F350 would still get 12mpg towing the empty back meaning the Kei truck really lost on like the 4th or 5th trip. At 20miles each way the diesel would burn about 5 gallons of fuel. The Kei truck would burn its entire 10 gallon fuel supply in the 400 mile trip (20x2x10). The Kei truck was great for delivery and some tradesmen in the city, and even for some of us car guys that are just trying to move around body parts, tires, engines, etc.. they make sense, and they’re cool/obscure, but not what I would call a work truck.

This isn't about buyer preference, or even manufacturer preference. This is %100 about government regulations incentivizing larger vehicles and manufacturing moving to that standard. As far as usefulness of pickups that's a case of "a man should have a truck" mentally mixed with a "but it's also nice to have a 4 door" desire. If these K trucks were available in America people would run them and "small" pickups wouldn't be larger then the old "full size" pickup.

Yes! people don't understand that the govt forces the auto manufacturers to follow and equation to determine what is allowed. The cars gas mileage requirement is determined by the area it takes up. Length x width. So making a truck that will sell forces them to make it huge so they can put an engine in it that has enough power to be useful and that people want. That is why you will never see narrow long bed trucks again. They would have to get like 30 mpg that would make it an awful truck. As things get tougher you will see cars and trucks getting smaller turbocharged mechanical nightmares that wont last and will be expensive and very hard to service and will be less reliable. @@virtuerseweirdly, its actually lack of regulation that led to this. Under CAFE car companies in America had to make more efficient and better engines for regular cars. Which they didn't want to do, so instead they poured tons of money and development into SUV's and light trucks - since they don't fall under CAFE restrictions due to being... light trucks. This is also why SUV's tend to actually be less safe compared to normal cars, they aren't held to the same safety standards. So car companies don't need to spend as much on safety features, or engine efficiency but can still charge a high price on these things. Basically, car companies found a loophole that'll probably never get closed because America is run by lobbyists. Still, in a roundabout way this was caused by regulations, just not any that affect trucks and SUV's in the US.

@PleaseEnlightenMe82 That is also true. Me, being a taller guy, I prefer something that's not cramped up, especially when I'm traveling long distances. Also, I do pull a car trailer a lot. But it's not cost-effective to own a smaller vehicle for me to drive when I'm not pulling a trailer. By the time you figure in fuel, insurance, and repair and upkeep of a second vehicle, you are just adding more to the finances of the household. Also, just because it's a smaller vehicle doesn't always mean it's better on fuel. I have owned a lot of vehicles in my lifetime. Some that should be really good on fuel by expected design that was absolutely horrible. I've had some that you would expect to be horrible by expected design that was impressively good on fuel. I had a 1986 chevy K5 blazer, 2001 chevy Z71 and a 1992 Dodge D350 and all 3 of those would get over 20 miles per gallon. The 1992 dodge was a Cummins diesel and would easily get 25 miles per gallon and with some adjustments could exceed 30 miles per gallon. Then, I had a 1991 chevy S10 and a 1997 nissan pickup with a 4 cylinder and a manual transmission. Both could barely get 14-15 miles per gallon out of those little trucks. Now. Being in the automotive industry all my life, there are things they could do to make vehicles of any size to be way more efficient. There was a man who invented a carburetor and claimed it could make any vehicle get close to 100 miles per gallon. The fuel companies and automotive manufacturers bought out the patent. Shortly after, the claim was the man committed suicide. So, knowing that things can be done to make vehicles more efficient and cleaner without all of the smog control junk, it tells me the fuel companies, automotive manufacturers, and EPA are all together in a ploy to have something around every corner to rob the people.

These new trucks, it's easier to replace the entire motor than attempt to do maintenance like replace a timing chain or water pump. You find yourself removing 12 other accessories just to replace a set of spark plugs. Give me the weedwacker truck any day, easy peasy.

hey, im not saying that US made is perfect, or even good for mechanics. those 150's are our bane, but these things make you remove sh!t jus to replace a damn oil filter. Having said that, we do need something in the US of this caliber @@andrewjames2569
