The hurricane hasn't proven itself in the longevity department. As a technician of almost 30 years, I have seen dozens of coyotes come in with over 300k miles and still running just as smooth and strong as day one. For me, if I have to drop over $50k, I want at least 10 years of reliable service.

If I was to buy a new F-150, it would be the coyote, I wouldn't even consider an Eco boost. No with saying that I'm a van guy, I drive a Chevy Express extended cargo van with the 6 liter. I think the RAM pro Master and Ford van are butt ugly, plus they don't offer a V8 or a big diesel. I live full time in a 32 foot travel trailer that weighs 8300 lbs as sitting with all my stuff in it.

The Ford gets the same fuel economy, the pay load is 400 lbs better, less squat, bigger fuel tank, better downhill braking, and a V8, plus cheaper price? No brainer, Ford takes the win by miles.

The Ford was also lower optioned. It didnt even have a trailer brake controller, so comparing the prices isnt exactly fair. Setting them both up for max towing(3.73's and tow/haul on the F150 and trailer tow group, 3.92's and locker on the ram) the Ram is actually 2k cheaper.

@@mdubz101 Why dont you look up the cost of turbos for a 3.5L Ecoboost on TascaParts instead of asking? Since you probably wont, I'll tell you that the OEM turbos are less than $400 a piece. This myth that Turbos are this super complex, expensive item needs to die. They are actually quite simple and cheap, especially when you are building them at the scale of 100's of thousands a year. And they are ridiculously easy to replace since they are hanging off the side of the engine. All of the maybe 10 bolts are accessible and easy.

I thought the same way, until I went turbo back in 2014 on the F150. Still love my 5.0 (that ecoboost just doesn't sound good.. and gets WORSE mpg than my 5.0 lol,) but man oh man when I'm towing, that low end torque of the turbo just can't be beat. It's sooooo effortless (ESPECIALLY when climbing a steep grade). My 5.0 does well too but it's just.. different. I'm a turbo believer now. I will say though, my ecoboost HAS required more maintenance for sure. Stupid manifolds and turbo exhaust flanges... always leaking. And on hot 95+ days when climbing with the turbo's working, it can struggle at times to stay cool. Ford should have doubled the cooling capacity on that thing.

You also contradict yourself..."stop calling the longest available bed in the 1500 as a long box" Crew Cab and short box (5'x") is the most popular and commonly sold combination on half tons. 6'x" beds are available with the big cab, but are rare pairings in comparison. An 8' bed on half tons is available on Reg cabs only and is rare. So it does make sense to refer to the standard bed as 5'x", and long bed as 6'x". When talking about HD trucks, it's easy to know the standard bed is 6'x" and optional long box is 8'x". Such a simple concept that is much easier for the average consumer, who is guess what... The new Rams are a sweet ride but at this point, with this being the first year for the hurricane engine, personally I wouldn’t buy it. My rule: Never buy a vehicle that hasn’t been around long enough to prove its self. All manufacturers are in a hurry to come out with something new but I’ll stick with tried and true. The 5.7 had all the engine a half ton should have. The fuel mileage difference is minute and turbos are expensive when they have an issue. No manual oil dipstick is no common sense. I think they’ll change that. Great vid guys.

At highway speeds with a 10-speed transmission, why would a 3.73 rear end make any difference in engine braking? Shouldn't the transmission be able to just drop 1-2 additional gears to achieve the same overall ratio?
@Jay-me7gw

yes. But its possible there is a gap somewhere that it cant make the jump down. My 2018 Lexus LX570 has an 8 speed and 3.31's and there are definitely holes, especially climbing. I get stuck in a power well where I'll be in 3rd at 3800 rpm and cannot drop to 2nd because it would kick me up to redline and so it wont drop the gear. The F150's 2nd is shorter than mine so it would be up north of 6000 rpm if it dropped down to 2nd. Having the 3.73's would allow it to stay in 3rd but spin 5400 rpm instead of 4800 at 60 mph.

Torque and gear ratios/ axle ratios make a huge difference in trailer tow, uphill climb, and also gas mileage. It all depends on what you need your truck for.

In general any forced induction engine is subject to more stress and strain than a naturally aspirated engine particularly if you are making 400+hp from a 3L or 3.5L engine boosted engine vs a 5L or bigger NA engine so odds are something will fail sooner and/or more often than a naturally aspirated engine. To me the turbos cost more, have less reliability history to go on and don't get any better MPG. They do tow better at altitude but I'll stick with a V8.

I left Toyota to go with ford and I will tell you that the ford 5.0L will get you further per mile. 22:32 the brakes were wet too with each application. Put it this way. Vehicles and manufacturers now don’t want their vehicles to last half 1,000,000 miles or more. There’s no money in it for them. They’re built for the sale not the trail. They built for comfort not the distance. They’re trying to get all vehicles on the road that break frequently. It keeps money coming in to the manufacturers pockets. Why does it matter if its in boost? Please explain what that would do besides completely eliminate pumping losses that large V8's would experience if they did not have cylinder shutoff? My 3.5L Ecoboost would pull my 5500 lb travel trailer at 70mph only making 3-4 psi of boost on flat ground. Wastegate duty cycle was almost zero and AFR's were running at 14.5, exactly where they should be for E10 fuel. AFR's did not decrease until I would hit ~350 ft-lbs of torque for more than 15 second, which would have been about 10-12 psi.

It matters because the point is that the fuel efficiency you'd gain with a smaller motor is canceled out by the requirement to make more power via boost (and more fuel accordingly of course). My example is in a Bronco, which has horrible aerodynamics even compared to an F-150 so my fuel milage will be worse than yours. Turbos aren't free power. Yes they harness spent exhaust energy, but they're nowhere near 100% efficiency and they increase exhaust backpressure between the cylinder and the turbine. This is a pumping loss of sorts that you don't have on non turbo engines. And unless you're full throttle, you still have traditional pumping losses induced there on the intake side so that's not a great argument. As proven in this video, modern turbo motors are just a more complicated way to do the same thing a much simpler and more reliable modern naturally aspirated engine can do. It takes a given amount of energy to move a certain vehicle that weighs a certain amount over a given route. Yes these new turbo engines have more power, but if you actually use that extra power, you're using even more fuel.

It's good to say Andre and Mr. Truck back at it again for another Ike gauntlet run. I think Ford's 5.0 V8 would have done better accelerating and holding back the load going downhill better with the 3.73 gearing vrs the 3.31. Andre and Mr. Truck, you have to do an Ike gauntlet with Ford Super Duty with the 6.8L. That is the only truck that you haven't tested yet

Fords build a truck page says his Coyote should've been a $1,660 up charge. his invoice didn't include that or his trailer towing rear suspension upgrade of $770 so that brings his corrected price UP $2,430 if the sticker was accurate for that optioned truck (not everyone is gonna luck out & find up charge options that aren't on the sticker). so the difference was actually $3,405 difference. Ram did have the adaptive Cruise control, Trailer Brake controller & trailer assist... so it did have options that would justify the price difference... so essentially they are almost identical. As for brake applications, it's to be expected, smaller engine displacement = less compression braking ability. the V8 has more. If the Coyote had a turbo, it would breathe easier up at those high elevations they test... overall... they're almost identical in almost every category, just a personal preference for styling in/out.

People always talk about the higher power of the turbo V6 options. While that might be true, they are more high strung overall with higher pressures and more stress. You won’t see millions of miles or really even 400k mile original v6 turbo power plants. My N/A V8 is more than powerful enough for me at 401/464 and I love the sound especially idling in my garage on first start in the cold. Just glorious

There’s plenty of F-150s with over 400k on the ecoboosts. Change the oil, don’t drag race every light and it will run. And for the turbos, those too are solid. It’s not like the early turbos of the 80’s and 90’s that were made of materials not suitable for high heat.

@bpri9880 agree with one point towing. If you are not towing regularly or heavy trailers the eco boost is great. If you are get the v8

@@williamadams4843 if you need to tow heavy loads and often, a v8 gasser isn’t good either. You should use a diesel. These 1/2 ton pick ups aren’t really meant for that, even though they are “rated” for it. I used to have a F-250 6.7 diesel and I towed very often with it, as soon as I didn’t need to tow anything like I was, I stepped back down to 1/2 ton. Now the most I tow is probably 3000lbs with my half ton. Personally I wouldn’t tow anything more than 5000lbs with a 1/2 ton.

A 5.6L DOHC V8(a 105mm block spacing for a truck engine or 110mm for a muscle car) for or 6L cam in block V8 would equal the performance of the 3L TT V6.

At elevation your ford is down 100hp at 4k feet, and it still pulled without a problem.
@Jay-me7gw
@Jay-me7gw 2 ай бұрын
Your math is slightly off. Its down 80hp at 6500', and 120hp at 11,000'. Thats because people dont realize pulling an 8500 lbs car trailer only needs about 250 hp to go 60mph up a 7% grade.. They used the 260hp Ram ecodiesel to pull a weight trailer in an 8 minute time as well. Which is why I was so disappointed that the 349 hp TTV6 GX550 did so poorly on the IKE the other day.

@@davidbutler5114 Its 3% per 1000' as a rule of thumb but air pressure does not decrease linearly either. The higher you go the less quickly it drops. Thats why the air pressure drops 30% in the first 2 miles(11000') above sea level but the atmosphere continues up for another 250 miles.

@@davidbutler5114 what elevation are you at? I had a Lexus GX460 and now a LX570, both NA V8’s, and I live at 6500’. Both flow almost exactly 20% less mass air flow here. My GX flowed 30 lbs/min at sea level and 24 lbs/min here. You can assume 1 lbs/min of mass air flow is equal to 10 hp.

At 60k for a base model 3.0 hurricane or the 3.5 ecoboost they can keep em still reather have a 5.7 hemi or the 5.0 coyote over a turbo v6 the v8 gets better gas mileage towing as well at a cheaper overall cost including break downs and maintenance...... Edit: And anyone saying oh but there faster then the v8 yes until you equal the playing field and turbo or supercharge either v8 and its game over and there really not all that much faster then the v8s in the qtr mile with the v8s being straight motor .......

I just picked up STX v8 over last weekend to replace my 18 STX 2.7EB. Much more refined than 18. Not as big of a discount but alright for these times. Overall still a value truck, couple things made it bit more premium than last time, carpet, upgrade fuel tank, diff ratio choices, bigger screen, and those electronic gizmo. ❤
