Even though I am a 35 year now retired Toyota Master Tech, I have been a Ford truck guy since I bought a used 89 2wd F150 in 1990. It was an inline 300 6 cyl. It was a decent truck even if only with the 300 and man trans. In 92, I traded it in for an F250 4wd with a 351M, auto. I lost that in my divorce in 2004. I then bought a 2004 F250 Xcab 4x4 longbed with the infamous 6.0 diesel, I never had an issue with it at all. I now have an 2018 F-150 4x4 with the 5.0. I love it! I had an SCT BDX tune on it in POWER mode (high test fuel only) until the fuel prices went way up. Near 80 more HP and 120 ft lbs of torque at 3500 rpm! It was breathtaking. I owned muscle cars back in the day, and the performance with that tune on it was amazing. FORD trucks are the BEST!

I'd like to see a Powerboost go up against a 3.5 ecoboost. The Powerboost is obviously rated for more hp/torque, but without the weight of the battery pack/electric motors the non-hybrid has a significant weight advantage. Higher up like these guys are would mean it will be about the same as the Chevy 6.2 litre. Sorry, that’s just the way it is. I have had the Coyote and it feels great and is no slouch,,,,, there just really are not any “slow” full size trucks out there!! The fun truck that may surprise everyone, not unlike the F150 2.7 EcoBoost, would be a GM 2.7 4 cylinder. 310 hp and 420 lb ft of torque!!! Weight savings and that torque is developed wayyy down in the rpm’s. Diesel like launch with more hp for AFTER 60 mph,,,,,,. Be fun to see. There are sooo many match ups that would be fun!! Gotta be as objective as possible. If they suit your need, either truck is great!! I love the GM diesel and have a Tahoe DuraMax. It gets fantastic fuel economy and is a very nice driving vehicle,,,,, I have to use a small gel pad for the seats though. They are just too flat and hard on the bottom. That pad takes away the pain in my back and arse!! My F150 Tremor is much more comfortable in the seating department. I wish the Tahoes had the new truck dash,,,,, it would be nearly perfect then!! Still love it mind you. Just finished about 3700kms of driving in both vehicles,,,, road trip for some friends that helped me in the past while I was I’ll. Took them fishing on the west coast of Vancouver Island,,,, 6 guys (including me) and 2 ladies, all friends. It was a great experience!! The Tahoe was the favourite except for the seats. It’s quiet and just east up the miles. The fuel was more expensive per litre for it, but in the end it was still cheaper by a couple of hundred bucks approximately. Paid as high as $2.26/litre cad or $8.70/us gallon ($6.85 USD/US gallon gas) $2.45/litre of diesel!! $9.43 CAD/US gallon ($7.42 usd per US gallon!!!) fuel is expensive here in Canada, especially in the province of BC. @Jebus Hypocristos I’m twenty years old so I’m no grandpa. When gas is $2-$3 a gallon the cost of electric doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. When US production of oil was cut back/stopped this administration simply created an energy crisis. Many low to mid income people/families don’t have $50k+ to go buy a decent electric car or truck. So no as of right now electric does not win all the time and especially on cost. Also as far as performance is concerned. You could buy a much cheaper 5.0 like I did and simply get the dealer to install a Roush or Whipple supercharger. With 700 hp on tap with a Ford warranty you are hitting 60 nearly a second faster than the lightning and you can actually get your hands on one. Even with a well equipped truck for around 50-60k with spending an additional 7-8k and you are saving at least 10-20k compared to a similarly equipped lightning or powerboost. For that you get better performance and range that is actually better than 250 miles on the fully electric. Our Secretary of Energy and many in this administration are invested with stocks in green energy so they are happy to make ice as expensive as possible. We need to open our eyes. They don’t care if it hurts lower and mid income.

No fuel economy gain from hybrid? Fail. Its like... they had all this time and the best they could do is get to 90% of the competition. And it doesn't even seem like the new Tundra will continue the reliability of the old.

100%. You hit all the reasons why the Tundra missed the mark. The 4Auto thing really is terrible. Especially because Toyota has the lockable Torsen center differential that they have been using in the Sequoia, Land Cruiser, Lexus GX and 4Runner for 20 years. That transfer case is probably the single best feature in my Lexus GX and it performs much better than the 4Auto case in my F150. The tundra with that setup would have awesome. And seriously, the lack of generator makes me not even consider their hybrid. The generator is the only reason I would buy a Powerboost.

The 3.5L ecoboost runs on regular 87 or 93 premium. It makes more HP on 93 just like the 3.5L Tundra. I'm assuming TFL had the same grade fuel in each of those trucks. Getting a Limited Hybrid Tundra isn't available yet I don't believe but even so, it won't make up THAT much difference. The F150 powerboost is a rocket ship of a truck.

Vehicles in this recall have certain nuts on the rear axle assembly that can loosen over time, and, in some cases, fall off, potentially causing an axle shaft sub-assembly to separate from the axle. Maybe behind the scenes you guys were monitoring the battery status of both trucks?

The Tundra Hybrid is just slower. Not a bad thing as it’s still very fast. Toyota seems to have it shifting at different points (especially noticeable in the towing videos) and mist likely for greater longevity. They have a reputation they are trying to keep, especially for being long lived trucks, and they are just protecting the powertrain more to keep that reputation alive. A worthwhile trade. They tow very well. This all being said when I am a Ford guy,,,,,,. The small camper I haul in my current F150 Tremor wouldn’t fit in the Tundras though. The Tundras, for some strange reason, only have a 49” space between the rear wheel wells. Eliminates a lot of truck campers.

@Kenny31190
@Kenny31190 Жыл бұрын
@@stang-rv4pb false on both counts. and full disclosure i dont own either of these trucks. it doesn't matter how many gears a trans has, the ratio applies to all of the gears whether its 5 speed or 10 speed. the higher ratio shortens all the gears and provides better acceleration, and vice versa for a lower ratio. Shorter gears and faster acceleration also builds boost in the turbos more quickly. The benefit of a lower ratio is a higher *theoretical* top speed and lower engine RPMs at a given cruising speed. hence why Toyota went with the lower ratio - lower cruising RPMs on the highway for better fuel economy. Not saying that's what truck owners want, just the reality of how Toyota does things. The fact there is no alternate gear ratio option for the Tundra doesn't eliminate the fact that the Ford still benefited from its own higher gear ratio in the acceleration figures. That's not comparing apples to apples.
@stang-rv4pb
@stang-rv4pb Жыл бұрын
@@Kenny31190 it is comparing apples to apples, because both truck’s were equipped with the highest (numerical) available gear ratio’s. My point is that rear end gear ratios aren’t everything, transmissions gear ratios also have an effect on final combined gear ratio’s. The previous Tundra had an available 4.30 rear end gear ratio, yet it had considerably slower acceleration then the current model. The previous generation Tundra’s had lower (numerical) transmission gear ratio’s, compared to the F150, but with the 4.30 rear end ratio, the final combined ratios were similar. I’m not aware of what the transmission gear ratio’s are on the current generation Tundra, with the new ten speed.

Part of the difference is that Toyota is trying hard to save the reliability image, especially long term, so they have tuned the motor for that. It’s a great towing motor though. I think in the Tundra, the more bang for the buck comes from the non-hybrid versions. As for Ford, I had the PowerBoost and loved it, but now drive the F150 Tremor with the 3.5 non-Hybrid and it’s more than enough for me!! I like the off-road drivability and the Torsen front differential. I kept the 2.0. Kw Pro Power Onboard as I haul a small truck camper on the Tremor and love the convenience and access to Air Conditioning!! Haha. 400hp and 430 lb ft of torque with about 70% of that torque available at 1200 rpm,,,,,, is still a really fast truck!!! If you own a 2.5 4 cylinder, you WILL have to redo the head, of course Toyota is the only truck company ever to have a recall on all of their trucks to “replace the entire frame due to imminent structural failure due to corrosion”. But hey,,,,, yeah,,,,, sure they “are” reliable. My 2014 Tundra was unfortunately a lemon and the worst truck I have owned in the last 44 years,,,,. We don’t have lemon laws here in Canada so I had to put up with it until a Toyota Tech bought it from me thinking I was full of it and abusing the truck (initially it was my dream truck purchase I finally had done it,,,,, then it started stranding me, I still babied the truck more than any prior or since). He learned quickly when he was stranded with us in the middle of nowhere while off-roading. I went home with my F150 I bought to replace the Tundra, picked up my vehicle trailer, my buddies had dragged the Toyota out of the woods by then, so I loaded it up and hauled it to his shop!! Hahaha. He now drives a F150 PowerBoost while still working as a Toyota Tech!! Heh heh. Say what you want. Toyotas are great vehicles, but they are no where nearly as reliable as they used to be and that myth has been dying for a long long time now. Do a little research “objectively” not with fanboy goggles on. I have owned well over 200 trucks in my lifetime and had just over 100 F150s. Mostly work trucks for the Ranch or tire shop, so they were worked hard. I have never been stranded by an F150, but was 4 times by my Tundra, understandably it was a lemon and not a fair representation of typical Tundras, but it was still a problem Toyota and the dealership was a pain in the arse to deal with. Over 100 trucks each with 70,000 to about 150,000 hard miles on them. Some were never even registered for on road use as they were 100% off-road on the ranch! Sorry to burst your bubble. At the same time, I KNOW Ford has produced some problem F150s, especially the 5.0 2017 - 2019, but it was still only a portion of the trucks failing due to a supplier issue,,,, the very large vast majority of owners never had problems even with those trucks. You can say the same for GM and the new Ram,,,,,.
