So, just to inform you guys, the part where Jotaro starts "flying" is actually him using his stand to kick off from the ground. That detail got ommited from anime because it would kinda break the flow of the fight if you just saw them kicking off the ground every few minutes. Also, DIO's stand, The World is assumed to be based on Holy Diver (at least his design) a song by Dio, it's not confirmed or anything but The World has tanks on its back and that's pretty much it. One more fun fact, The World was actually first Stand created and designed by Araki, it was meant to contrast Star Platinum from the very beginning.

In the OVA, which changed a lot about specific fights (like the Younger D'Arby wasn't in the mention and it was Avdol who was opening DIOs casket, as opposed to Nukesaku), Jotaro is thrown out of DIOs mansion by DIO and is shown binding his wounds with comic books (or wooden planks in the OVA, I don't remember). Better set up there, but the set up was still there in the manga, so I'll let it fly. We know that Jotaro is quick on his feet, he knows DIO throws knives, so it's logical (or at least in the realm of possibilities) that he'd do something like that. It also explains why DIO had time to feed. Because Jotaro had to find books he didn't care about getting stabbed.

The World is the last Tarot Card with the number 21 In the coloured version of manga , The World is completely yellow , but in the anime it has little shades of grey. and also hearts shaped thingies on his head and knees and other joints. In the second version of opening where DIO stops time , you can see very small details indicating the appearances of DIO , like polnareff climbing the stairs , DIO killing kakyoin , DIO throwing the knife on joseph , and also star platinum deflecting all the knives The World has two diving Oxygen cylinders on its back and kind of looks like a diver , i think that is as DIO was in ocean for 100 years and his stand resembles that. The initial set of stands (headcanon: which were all named by two professional fortune tellers, Enyaba and Abdul) are all named after major arcana from the tarot deck. In addition to being a deck for playing card games and fortune telling the tarot also tells a kind of metaphorical story of a person's life. Every person begins life as The Fool, before moving on through the arcana to reach The World, where the traveler becomes a complete human being... I like to think that the World is actually the stand of Jonathan's body - the pinnacle of what a 19th c strongman could be ( :P) and the only person that Dio ever respected. Canonically according to an interview any Hamon user who developed a stand would get one that can conduct Hamon for them (so something like hermit purple)

The first half of this fight is brilliant in adding tension and higher stakes with Kakyoin figuring out Dio's stand ability but dying brutally and then Joseph dying in front of his grandson not being able to warn him about Dio's power. All of this leads to and builds up the inevitable clash between Dio and Jotaro. From the point Dio and Jotaro start throwing hands that's when this fight just becomes totally bonkers and insane. It's just two men doing anything they can to kill each other and it's fantastic. This fight is incredibly iconic and has been referenced in so many different media and has been memed to death. It's insane to think about the impact it's made. The majority of Jojo fans I've talked to always say this fight is their favorite. Get ready for another big comment thread for a big JoJo fight. At long last one of the oldschool manga fights that changed anime/manga history is here in animated form for Prez and Kelvin to witness. It's quite hard to overstate how important DIO and this fight was from its publication. Part 3 DIO is a simple villain, though he is still so iconic, especially back in the day he blew things up with the Stardust Crusaders finale. There are many oldschool series to thank for the innovation of creative and exciting concepts. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is just one of those examples. To appreciate DIO's massive influence on inspiring many creators in manga after this monumental fight.. I've compiled a stack of small DIO facts. -Dio's name is derived from the Italian word for "God", befitting his megalomaniac personality -The style of Dio's name in Part 1 is written normally, whereas DIO's name in Part 3 onward is written in English and completely capitalized. This is because DIO disowns his birthname is spite of his father. -The trick DIO used on Hol Horse by instantly going through spider webs without damaging them is likely a reference to Bela Lugosi's first scenes in Dracula (1931). -Out of coincidence, Dio shares two of his Japanese voice actors and his English anime voice actor with the CastlevaniaW version of DraculaW, those being Hikaru MidorikawaW in the OVA and the PS2 game, Norio WakamotoW in the Audio Drama, and Patrick Seitz in the anime. Midorikawa voices Dracula's reincarnation in the series, Soma Cruz, while Wakamoto and Seitz voice Dracula himself. -In Araki's top Ten Favourite Characters in 2000, DIO ranked as 10th, being the third main villain in the countdown. -One reason Jonathan's body would reject Dio's head would be transplant rejection. Transplant rejection occurs when the recipient's immune system attacks the transplanted organ or tissue. The immune response protects the body against potentially harmful substances ("antigens") such as microorganisms, toxins and cancer cells. The immune system distinguishes "proper" from "strange" and reacts against substances it considers "foreign". In other words, that meant Jonathan's body was still fighting Dio's head. -Araki considers Dio to be 'the true protagonist' of Phantom Blood. Araki developed Dio's character design before Jonathan. Dio also makes his debut first before Jonathan. Araki pondered in deciding what would be the scariest factor, and decided that "evil from the past" coming to get the present descendant would be the most frightening thing. Dio was developed with this in mind. After him, Jonathan Joestar of 'light' was designed to counter Dio's 'darkness' -In a spring 2018 interview with Shueisha's Kotoba magazine, Araki describes how Blade RunnerW had influenced his work back when it premiered. He mentions Dio's blond hair and muscular build in particular as being influenced by the Blade Runner character, Roy Batty. --------------------------------- Ending this segment of the thread there is more I can list from various sources regarding the amount of references made to Dio. Simply put, if I were to try compiling how many shows, anime, manga, games referenced DIO.. it would be TOO LONG and frankly almost impossible after viewing the now obsolete written lists I know of that exist online. Here for the rest of this thread in the replies I'll give you three special interviews Araki's thoughts on writing: DIO, Kakyoin, and Enyaba Take care folks, see you guys on the finale to this adventure
@rockectsciencesuckz3 жыл бұрын
When asked about his thoughts on writing DIO Araki said: "DIO-the archenemy of the Joestar family. Given that I was bringing back a character who had been at the bottom of the sea for a century, naturally he would have changed during the time he was down there-his malice ever growing. I wanted to make DIO feel like a final boss, and given that readers were really looking forward to his reintroduction, in order not to let them down, I not only put a lot of thought into his appearance, but his mind-set and thought process as well-in particular, how DIO would view his relationship to the Joestar family and the destiny they shared as an evolution from what it was in Part 1. What is the destiny that DIO has to face? It's not to face off with Jotaro, the descendant of Jonathan. It's something invisible to the eye that lies behind their bloodline. It's what gives the Joestars their allies, the Hamon, Stands, and their uncanny luck... that's what I define as the Joestars' "destiny," and instead, what DIO is destined to do is to quash that and surpass it. As such, he doesn't view Jotaro himself as his archenemy-rather, DIO only views him as an obstacle to overcome in order to fulfill his destiny after his hundred-year slumber. In the end, DIO wasn't able to achieve his goal, but it's fun to imagine what things would have been like if he had been able to defeat Jotaro. I'm sure he would have beaten down anyone who he thought had the potential to challenge his position at the top of the food chain. Even after defeating Jotaro, perhaps someone else would inherit his will. After all, DIO had already experienced that once before. However, DIO is more of the reactionary type, so he probably would have continued to take root in Egypt and wait for his prey to come to him. I had been working with DIO's character since Part 1, so I would often try and put myself in his shoes and imagine myself as a vampire. Those who put on the stone mask have to take the lives of others in order to keep on living. During the part where DIO is chasing after Joseph and Kakyoin, I wrote a scene where he takes a moment to marvel at the sight of cars. One would have to be an immortal vampire to experience something like that, so I actually found myself feeling a bit envious of him. If you slept long enough, for example, you could see a country instantly change from a monarchy into a democratic society-experiences that the average person could never have. As long as you had humans to feed on and you remained in good health, I think it would be pretty fun. Do vampires even get sick to begin with? (laughs) Speaking of DIO, I'll never forget how my editor suddenly ended up in the hospital right when DIO and Jotaro were in the midst of their final battle. I remember panicking because Part 3 was rapidiy approaching its end, and it's not like I could stop and wait for him! He would always give me really good specific feedback on things like Stand designs. "This one is too similar to something you've already done, so try and differentiate their silhouettes a bit more." It was tough working without him. What's that? Did he give feedback on the design for DIO's The World? Hmm... I'm not sure about that one (laughs wryly)." Interviewer asks, "You already drew DIO naked for Part 1. Why did you do it again?" Araki responds, "It makes him seem more like a Greek or Roman god. In Parts 1 through 3, besides DIO, there are other examples of me drawing characters like this, such as the Pillar Men. However I stopped doing it as much after I changed the setting to be a bit closer to home for Part 4 onward."

When asked about his thoughts on writing Kakyoin Araki said: "I thought up all five of the Joestar troupe - Kakyoin, Jotaro, Joseph, Avdol, and Polnareff - as a set. I decided on the right balance from the start so that their appearance, personality, fashion and Stands did not overlap. For me, it was very important for their silhouettes to be recognizable. Still, my editor at the time told me, “From this silhouette, no one has a round shaped head so everyone must be pretty straightforward”. I thought to make Kakyoin the thin, somewhat sensitive one of the group. Even though Kakyoin is the only Japanese in Part 3 besides Jotaro, I wasn’t specifically particular about his nationality. What was most of note was his name. I always think of both the first and last names together as a set. His last name, "Kakyoin", I took from a place in my hometown of Sendai. It’s a place that I always passed through on my way to Sendai Station so it’s a name of a place very dear to me. And so, I made 典明 (Note: Kakyoin’s first name which can be read as either Noriaki or Tenmei) the first name to go along with Kakyoin as a last name. Officially, it has become "Noriaki", but I’ve always called him "Tenmei". Actually, I left this reading of his name as a signature in Enya’s hotel guest book. I made the main character’s name 'Kujo Jotaro’ so I gave Kakyoin his name after I pondered how it will sound and the proper balance of the characters in his name but… my editor made "Noriaki" go off on a journey with the Joestar troupe. When I saw that his name was different in the comics, I was a little surprised, but I guess this is like when a kid gets his friends to call him "Noriaki" even though his parents named him 'Tenmei.' Although I wasn’t particular about the fact that Kakyoin is Japanese, I purposely made him the foil to Jotaro. The reason why I made Kakyoin Jotaro’s first actual opponent in a Stand vs. Stand battle is because I wanted to convey to the readers the concept of a long range and short range Stand. As a long range Stand, I decided to depict Kakyoin’s 'Hierophant Green’ stretching out in strands so that both Jotaro and Kakyoin’s differences can be easily comprehended when compared to 'Star Platinum.’ I had many ideas of how to depict long range attacks, but in order to not have it turn into anything goes right from the start, I was careful to emphasize that Stands equal manifests and stands next to the user. I didn’t really have a chance to draw it in the comic, but Kakyoin is a high school student that goes to the same school that Jotaro does. During this journey, you can sense that although they become friends, there is still a sense of distance. But I wonder how it would’ve been like if they didn’t have their Stand abilities as common ground...Considering their personality types, they probably would not have become friends (Laughs)." Interviewer asks, "Did you consider not giving Kakyoin a gakuran to make him contrast more with the main character?" Araki responds "Since Kakyoin is an honor student type, I gave him a prim and proper gakuran. Jotaro is a hoodlum so his gakuran is hanging open. Having them both wear the same outfit differently makes the differences in character more pronounced. I think I also distinguished them by giving Jotaro accessories."

When asked about his thoughts on writing Enya Araki said: "Who taught DIO about Stands? That question is how I came up with Enyaba. I drew Stand names from Tarot card names, and I had this vague image of a witch-esque fortuneteller in my mind. And if I was to make that character an enemy, then I wanted her to be a scary old woman. Horror movies, which I consider my teachers and textbooks, always have scary old women in them, after all. Just like how vampires appeared in Part 1, JoJo is always deeply connected to horror movies, and this influence is especially apparent in the villains. I'm pretty sure I put all the standard elements of horror movies' scary old women into Enyaba. She waits to ambush them with a blade hidden in her hand, and despite how frail she looks, she can somehow run really fast. (Laughs) They're running with all their might, yet when they look back, they see her standing right behind them. That's really scary! The same is true for her Stand, Justice. There are many horror movies that deal with an unknown virus that comes to attack the human race. Justice is based on that type of idea, in that it's a Stand that spreads out through the town, which was expressed through its mist. Incidentally, I think that Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, and the Mummy are the three most important designs from the horror world. Just look at the Mummy's wrappings. Why is he all wrapped up so meticulously? It's so charming, and I sense a type of romance when I see it. Her son J. Geil's Stand, Hanged Man, is based on the Mummy with a little Merman essence mixed in. They're both straight out of the world of horror. Looking back, I can remember that I really enjoyed drawing Enyaba, precisely because she was filled with the horror elements that I love. But I'm not sure if she was a fitting enemy for a shonen manga. Making a shonen manga main character go up against an old woman is very risky, and I didn't feel like Enyaba would be popular among the readers. (Laughs) Despite how much I personally liked her, the essence of her character was all about drawing the horrors and strength she possessed as not only a female, but an old woman. And there's no doubt that she became a fitting player in the JoJo world, which centers around Stand battles. Like I explained in Volume 5 when talking about Lisa Lisa, I realized that by adding the idea of supernatural abilities into my battles, it wouldn't matter if the fighters were women or children who may not necessarily look physically strong. Stands were a level above Ripple in terms of that idea. Enyaba is an old woman, yet she has a Stand that can take over an entire town... Including her own visual appearance, Enyaba is a very important character in terms of expressing the spirit of Stands to the reader. Lastly, I think that Enyaba is as mentally strong as anyone who can stop time, considering how she was mentally powerful enough to control a town's worth of corpses." Interviewer asks, "Why did you give her "Justice" even though she's an enemy?" Araki responds, "I thought the gap between her character and her Stand would be interesting. Like, "THIS person is Justice?""

I found this channel about a week ago and have loved the reactions, but also these comments! I'm a long time fan of jjba, and am nearly caught up with part 8, but every time you manage to find a little bit of trivia which I've never heard about before. I hope you're doing well (I remember you said something about surgery a while back), and I can't wait to see more comments in the future :)

I'd like to imagine the reason dio can "fly" in stop time is because gravity becomes very weak in stop time kinda like jumping on the moon you can see after killing kakyoin he puts his foot on kakyoin to push off him when tile resumes

By the way. Jotaro and Dio can't fly. These are stand jumps. Same thing jotaro used in fight with N'doul when he grabbed iggy. It just looks like that in anime bc jotaro and Dio needed to be in the air for so long to fit all of the text there was in the manga

The whole star platinum and the world being the same type of stand was actually foreshadowed by the d'arby brothers because that showed relatives can have similar stands and obviously Dio has Jonathon's body so he's sorta related to jotaro

Don't know if anyone's commented it but for these 2 to be able to stop time they would have to freeze EVERYTHING like literally everything because if it were only a small area it would throw the earth outta whack like if it was just a city for example when time resumes it would probably throw everyone within range like the speed of sound in 1 direction so sp/tw would have to stop every piece of matter all at once which is pretty crazy

Hey guys. Holy crap you made it. One of the sickest fights in the show, and how climactic, right? As someone learning Japanese, I also appreciate his pronunciation. Technically they are speaking english when they say the stand names, but they do it using sounds already used in Japanese, using symbols known as Katakana. So we have Suta Purachinamu (Star Platinum) Hairofanto Gurin (Heirophant Green) and of course Za Warudo (The World)
@RayAkuma2 жыл бұрын
Funfact: Dio and Jotaro flying is actually not how it went in the Manga. In the Manga they use Star Platinum and the World to Push themselves around in the air. But because there were so many panels of dialogue between each time they moved the Animators made it easier for themselves to keep the pace of the fight. That's at least what I heard in a Video about debunking inconsistencies in the Anime.

14:46 "That makes Star Platinum useless unless he uses Star Finger" I've never once in my life thought of it, but it would have been absolute peak fiction is Jotaro ended up beating DIO with a Star Finger attack from just barely out his range. Im actually surprised you guys didnt forget about Star Finger. Canonically speaking Star Platinum DOES have like 5x the range of The World. Though i think this was more the way Araki wrote it down than the actual useful range. Star Platinum has 10 metres and The World has 2. But they are both "effective ranges" and not actual limits, and considering they are basically the same stand, this kinda just sounds like a writing hicup.
@ZeallustImmortal Жыл бұрын
My head canon is that the reason Star Platinum and The World have different effective ranges isn't because of the stands, but the way the users are, and the way theyve trained their stands. Jotaro can't stop time for 5 seconds, but he CAN use his ability at a slightly farther range. Which is better? Who knows. It's willpower in the end. But the fact DIO trained the time stop, and Jotaro trained the battle and survival, makes sense that they'd have different skills in the same set. It's like putting 2 people that main the same character in a game against eachother, they have the same abilities but likely excel in different ways.
