Thai boys are ordained as Buddhist novices to honour rescuer

Eleven boys from the Wild Boars football team rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand were ordained as Buddhist novices on Wednesday in memory of a volunteer diver who died during their rescue. The group and their coach posed in orange robes with shaved heads and will now spend nine days living in a temple and adhering to the strict rules of Buddhism.

Its Thai buddhist culture.......all males are expected to be a novice monk at least once in their lifetime (even those from elite families)...the exception are those of other religious faith......PERIOD....so respect their lifestyle

Yes they will come out of it this is literally just for a 9 day period back to normal life from next Friday.

yes the duration varies ...the boys have decided on 9 days because its a lucky number for Thais...some just do it for a couple of days,weeks or a year upwards

We hope the boys don't forgt the 9_-4 days of worries n anxieties Tey put teir parents thru, grdparents, uncles n aunts, Frens n relatvs, whethr Tey wd cm out dead or alive, thru those 2wks of findg n rescuing them out. # no doubt being in the cave for 2wks the boys had a uniqued sharg memories of fraternity n emtional support thru tough times in hunger, n Tey r grateful to teir rescuers, Tey seemd unemotional twds teir fam hugs when we were hm. Camaderie is no doubt imp but Tey must appreciate what teir parents went thru w/o eatg or sleepg n being unable to work becos of them.

Absolutely, it is the way the boys can return the favor for the Navy SEALs who died. (It's like you can not do anything for him anymore because he died, but you can be in good merit and he will receive the merit from you.) This is what we believe. ^^

So glad the kids are alright. Was stressed out about them.Here in Michigan and only had a radio. The radio only talked about the rescue for 30 seconds once an hour. It took a week for the news to say that the kids had been in the cave before. All they kept saying was "Missing Soccer Team". As if the kids had never been in the cave. Thailand TV showed a group of 8 climbers who had flown in. This group found 18 fissures and hidden holes in 3 days. Poor lads forced to become buddhist to pay homage to their rescuer as if thank yous are not enough. They are wondering if they didn't follow their coach to that cursed cave none of this mental and physical torture would have happened to them in the name of involuntary and demanding gratitude.

It will probably help them to process any guilt they have around the death of the former Navy Seal, so that they don't carry this around with them ie they are repaying him by making merit for him. The family of the former Navy Seal will also appreciate the respect that is being paid to their loved one and I suspect will be grateful that they are all making merit for him. In the long run it will probably help the boys and the bereaved family to have some closure and acceptance. Most of these boys come from deeply superstitious families, they will probably feel comforted too that having been ordained will eradicate any entities and bad spirits they believe might have accompanied them out of the cave. In all it seems positive for the boys to believe they have been cleansed and have made amends for the former Navy Seals death. At the end of the day, it is only for 9 days, and at least it gives them some reprieve from the media

Not too familiar with it, but I don't think they're being forced into one of those super strict monk-lives or anything. Think some of them said something like they might become Navy Seals or whatever, it's just the stuff you go through after such an event. Other important roles are hydrologists, geologists, mechanical engineers that worked those pumps, the cooks and all that supported the thousand or so people working around the clock, etc. But they're young so they have many options, other thing now is keeping them busy might distract their mind from remembering the weeks trapped in the dark. I would guess even if you aren't scared by it you might get disoriented simply from the sensory deprivation, and malnutrition.
