The rule is maximum 6 people on stage (including backup singers, dancers and musicians). Before 1999 the language rule said that said that you had to sing in your native language (with an exception in 73-77). Before 1997 it was 100&% jury voting, 1997-2008 it was up to 100% televoting and since 2009 it's 50/50. That's why all the flashy dance chaos entries (they were more memorable so people voted for them) won in the 2000s, and why Ireland (they could sing in English) won in the 90s when a lot of Eastern European countries entered and English became the lingua franca of Europe. Before that a lot of French songs won because of the countries entering the contest at that time, a majority spoke French (France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Monaco, Switxerland, Austria). Just something to keep in mind when watching old Eurovision content.

In 2005 when Greece won, the swedish population rooted both for Sweden but also for Greece because the singer Helena is part-swede...well..both parents are greek bit she was born in sweden. When ahe won most swedes was happy :) I dont know if youre familiar with it but she was also the second half of the groups Antique and one of their biggest hits was Opa Opa. 😊 The song with the russian guy, Dima Bilan in 2008, I personally didn't like it but the iceskater is one of the worlds famous russian figureskater Evgeny Pluschenko.. so i have a theory that many voted for him just because of Evgeny 😅

It was interesting to see your reaction, I found it really interesting because with one of you being from Thailand you will have a non-European perspective on the songs, and with one of you being Québécois you have a slant to understand the French and the English language songs in a different way to the other language songs. Each person has their own views on the songs they like more but when I look across all the entries from each country my favourite two are the UK and Israel. That isn’t based just on the winners but on all entries. Switzerland also is very strong. Each country has some nice entries and no country has all great entries each year.

Vicky Leandros or Vasiliki Papathanasiou who won for Luxembourg in 1967 was actually Greek. Later in her life she was the Deputy Mayor in Piraeus, Greece. Dana or Dana Rosemary Scallon who won in 1970 later went into politics and was a member of the European Parliament from 1999-2004.

Others already mentioned, that the singers don't have to be from the country. The reason is that the ESC is a song contest and not a singing contest. The composer/lyrics writer has to be from the participating country. The trophy also goes to the composer/writer. And because Celine Dion participated in 1988 I give you some other 1988 and French language related facts. France Gall who won for Luxembourg in 1965 and who is actually French, had a world wide hit in 1988 with "Ella, elle l’a", which you probably know. And the Belgian-Canadian singer Lara Fabian, who was also very successful in the 90s and early 2000s in Canada, participated in the ESC 1988 for Luxembourg and had there her first bigger international experience at the age of 18.

When 4 contries came on 1st place, change rules, with same points, counting most 12s, 10s and so on.... This uses when Sweden (Carola/Fångad av en Stormvind won over France in Rome 1991)
@MaxSujyNorden Жыл бұрын
Make sense. 4 way tie is kinda weird!
@Asa...S Жыл бұрын
Yes, that was the tie breaking rules at the time. Now they country that recieved the most points from the televoting would win the tie, if it's the same it will be the country that recieved points from more countries in the televoting, if it's still the same, it's the one with the most 12p, 10p and so on (like the old system), and if the tie still can't be broken then the country that performed earlier wins the tie. These tie breaking rules doesn't only apply on the winner, but for deciding all the places in the contests, so there are no longer any like shared 9th place or anything like that. With rules that applies today, France would've won in 1991.

It's funny to see your reaction to Irelands three wins in a row... The gossip was that they did NOT want to win again (taking on the Eurovision finale is a HUGE financial burden...) so they sent a ballad, with the thought that a slow song wouldn't win. But it did... ;) When Carola won for Sweden with Fångad av en Stormvind it was a actually a tie, points wise. The poor presenter got so confused... But there were rules in place and the song with the most 12 points from the jury votes won. Sweden is also the reason that there is now a rule that the rehearsal must be like the actual act on the big night... The host Lill Lindfors "lost" her skirt, and while the Swedish broadcasting company had given the green light to the goof, the Eurovision people had not... LOL

Some of the seeming changes in what kind of song gets picked to win are in part a reflection of the growing number of countries participating. The first year 1956, only seven countries competed. Next year, 44 countries will send entries, and 28 of them will compete in the final. Another thing that influences what type of winner we get is the voting and scoring systems, which have changed several times over the years, from juries to only televoting and combinations of the two. We may see some new changes next year on account of the discussion concerning whether the jury favourite or the audience favourite should have the advantage. Many people were upset that Loreen beat Käärijä for the title.

If you're taking requests for individual ESC song, I strongly recommend you to react to Slovakia's 2010 entry. Kristína - Horehronie. It was considered a top 10 contender before the contest but it failed to connect with the live performance for various reasons (difficult choreography was one of them but also the fact that Kristína was terrified of a big audience in attendance as she was very inexperienced in terms of performing live, she was mostly working in a studio before that and she wasn't used to it at that time). It finished 16th out of 17 songs in the semifinal and failed to qualify. Most people still think that it is one of the best if not the best non-qualifiers in ESC history and the fact that the music video for this song on ESC KZbin channel is still the most viewed out of all non-qualifiers is one of the factors. And it also was named in the list of 15 best Eurovision Songs of all time by Svenska Dagbladet as the sole non-qualifier before 2016 contest took place (it was marking 60th anniversary of the first ESC held in Lugano in 1956).

@teo_heel11 ай бұрын
@@MaxSujyNorden Charisma wasn't there yet, as I said she was VERY inexperienced... and I think the song was a bit too hard to perform while doing the performance with all the lifts and other stuff. Now Kristína is known as one of the most popular singers in Slovakia and ESC was a break-through for her, she did a bit of folk after that, when she released a song "Jabĺčko". But yeah, I agree. The song is good... but performance was lackluster to say the least. If you're curious, you can watch her performance with the same song that was done in 2018 when she was performing at "Slovenka roka". kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJy2n6p_dsqVhqssi=r0DyQ1SV6Tedh5Kh That's for me one of her best TV performances with this song. The controversy about Consita Wurst winning wasn't that the song won despite it being a trans person, but that it won BECAUSE it was a trans person. If it was not a trans person singing it would likely be mid at best. But with like 30 songs to vote for, a minority voting for politics can win the entire competition for their sake if there is no strong favorite already. Yugoslavia, although a communist state, NEVER was a part of the Soviet block. Yugoslavias partisans liberated their country on their own, without being "helped" by the Red Army. Tito opposed to Stalin and kept his country "neutral". Therefore Yugoslavia took part in the ESC since 1961 and won in 1989 for the 1st time.
@МультикНиколаевич10 ай бұрын
The USSR's assistance to Yugoslavia in World War II was carried out from 1944 to 1945 on the initiative of the National Committee for the Liberation of Yugoslavia and the Soviet authorities. Assistance was provided both in the form of the supply of weapons, military equipment and other materials, and in the form of the participation of Soviet military specialists. The supply of weapons to the Yugoslav anti-fascists de facto began on May 24, 1944, when the 1st separate Yugoslav infantry brigade of 1946 men appeared in the Red Army. By July 1944, the formation of the brigade was completed, and in August it began fighting as part of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. In September 1944, the commander-in-chief of the PLA, Josip Broz Tito, who was in Moscow, reached an agreement on the supply of weapons and supplies to 12 land and two aviation divisions of the People's Liberation Army. In autumn, in the area of the city of Craiova, the forces of the 2nd Ukrainian Front of the Red Army established a hospital base for the NOAI (10 military hospitals with 5,000 beds), which was the beginning of large-scale assistance to the Yugoslav partisans. The 2nd Yugoslav Tank Brigade, created in the USSR, took the first battle in March 1945 on the Srem front; By January 7, 1945, the 11th Fighter and 42nd Assault aviation divisions were already based in Vojvodina. The total amount of Soviet aid to the Yugoslav armed formations in the period up to January 1, 1945 amounted to over 52 million rubles.

A lot of French people don't know their own history. French-Canadians speak similarly to the colonizers like Samuel de Champlain who founded Quebec in 1608 (a little bit Cajun style). So our French is more than 400 years old, while in France, they speak an updated version. We can speak in a way that French people would understand if needed. What they don't understand is typical chit-chat between locals. French-Canadians is more similar to Scottish or Irish, not Jamaican (in terms of accent). Always remember that in France, they don't speak nor understand English much compare to French-Canadians. We do mix French and English a lot in Montreal.

It’s a very good song and the singer has a great voice but there's a rule in the contest that you can bring political songs to the contest and this is a political song. Ukraine always win when is in conflict with Russia and sending songs like this.

Most songs take inspiration from others. In fact, Sweden has a lot of influence in the US when it come to composing and writing songs. I would like to know which song you are refering to? And yeah Ukraine in 2022 should not have won imo.

It's a singing competition so all the dancing, background, lighting, choreography doesn't really count. But of course they make an impression on the 50% of the vote that consists of ordinary residents. On the other hand, the other half, which consists of judges from all countries, must only judge by the music (not even the song should count, but only the melody, from the beginning the competition was called the melody festival).

This may explain why judges and public ranking can vary so much? The judges are under weird criterias tbh.

It's not a singing competition, to be clear. It's a song contest. Therefore the song is the thing that counts the most. The rules have changed a lot through the years, but right now the jury have 4 criteria to judge, and only one is regarding the vocal performance. It's about the song. Also, the reason of the strange/poorer songs winning between around 2000-2008 is because it was televote only - no jury vote. Juries came back in 2009, thank God, generally meaning the songs needed to be of higher quality to get the jury points.

Greece 2005 , I was 14 then, will forever be my number one song, no pun intended. The 00s were probably the craziest years of ESC and I love it and kinda miss it a lil bit.
