We usually don't spell it as สระเอ-ปอปลา-สระอา but we spell it as ปอ-เอา เปา. The new way that your nephew spell are used to make Thai language easier, It was use in the Sarasas school. The cons of this way is obvious, you didn't learn the whole vowels and if you want to spell a word you'll need to remember the whole word

6:52 A bit of a nitpick there, but shouldn't Burmese equivalent of be spelled as ပေါ? Else it'd be confused with ဟေ . Otherwise splendid video!
Something is going deviated from what we learn vowels in the past, in Thai language. New educators focus on writing and use the same principle to say (สะกด), while in the past the precedent rule is based on consonant first, followed by vowels (single and compound), then tone (วรรรณยุกต์). The new method seem contradict to the way our brain is thinking. You have a good catch, Stuart!... Thank you very much for your observation and sharing. Very useful. ความรู้ด้านภาษาศาสตร์ของคุณยอดเยี่ยมมากครับ
Thank you. I am looking forward to the English version.
