Dear Peter I love to listen to stories the way you narrate them, when I close my eyes it takes me back to an unforgettable time I spent in Thailand back from 1985 to 1997, a failed marriage, 3 beautiful kids and my bowing right in front of Great King Bhumipol on his birth day ceremony after donating 10,000 Bahts (A Thai Tradition) perhaps in the year 1987. Right now I am in Australia since 1997, whenever somebody tells me any of his story linked to the Land of Promise, I keenly listen to him/her because it takes me back to the streets of Bangkok I used to roam about.

In 1980 I was 20 and in the USN. My ship, a smallish auxiliary salvage ship, was due to visit Pattaya but we were diverted to Subic Bay in the PI to salvage a USN P-3 that went down just after takeoff from NAS Cubi Point. The bad news was I never made it to Pattaya until 5 years ago, the good news was we spent an extra week in Subic. Magsaysay Drive in Olongapo was banging in those days! (Also bad news was the entire crew of the P-3 perished)

The first 2 stories confirm to me again that Love is almost like an incurable disease for some ( many?? ) people. Looking back at my life am thankful I am immune to that disease. Probably saved me from a lot of grief. In Pattaya the "3 day rule" does not exist for me. I prefer the "GFE". On most trips have had a lady for a week or 2 or more and at the end, "Bye Bye", no dramas. Thanks for the stories.

The first alarm bell in the first story would be the notion that a Thai woman who has already got to the UK and established a life there would have a mother in Thailand without a working refrigerator. I have travelled all over Vietnam over the last 30+ years to the remotest corners and never do I recall going to a house without a fridge. Not double door types with automatic ice machines but perhaps a little 30 year old banged up hotel fridge that can be had for about 10 dollars. Of course the guy living this situation would not know that and yielded to tugs of the heartstrings.

Its a hard life being a bar girl every day having to sit there for hours waiting for a customer listening to music she dont like. So if you take an interest in her and she thinks you have money she will stay with you for the length of your holiday. For her it becomes a holiday too .eating in fancy restaurants shopping sleeping as long as she wants watching her favourite soap operas on TV .so when its time to say goodbye she starts crying remember she's not your girlfriend and she's only crying because she has to go back to the bar again

A lot of these guys need to learn that love doesn’t mean you have to behave in a dumb way. Sure, love her, and leave anyway. It’s like people who get angry and attack others. Okay, be angry, that doesn’t mean your emotion has to decide what to do. With Thai girls you’ll fall in love pretty easy, but that doesn’t mean you have to give her family money, or stay with her at all. The good thing about Thai girls is that you’ll fall in love with the next, the next, the next.

HIV, sex and the law UK In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, it is possible you could have legal action taken against you. This will only happen if all of the following apply: You suspect or know you are HIV positive You suspect or know you have a detectable viral load (YOU still have sex without a condom without telling your sexual partner about your HIV status)! Your partner acquires HIV as a result. This issue may affect how you approach your sex life after an HIV diagnosis. Several people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have been charged with committing an offence because their sexual partners acquired HIV through sex without a condom, and they had not told them they were HIV positive. (The term often used in the law is the ‘reckless’ transmission.) In England and Wales, there is no legal obligation to disclose your HIV status to a sexual partner, but if you are later charged with transmitting HIV, proving that your partner knew you were HIV positive would help your defence. If you take precautions to protect your sexual partner from HIV by using a condom or ensuring your viral load is undetectable by adhering to treatment, it is extremely unlikely you would be charged with the reckless transmission. If your partner knows you have HIV and consents to sex without a condom, do not assume that they are also HIV-positive or on PrEP (regular medication to prevent HIV infection), as you may be charged for any resulting infection if your partner goes to the police. In those rare circumstances, proving that they consented to the risk would help your defence. The Crown Prosecution Service (for England and Wales) has produced guidance to help the courts decide if a crime has been committed and whether someone should be charged. The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service in Scotland have done the same. The Association of Chief Police Officers has also published guidance. These guidelines say that there is usually no case if: you didn’t know or suspect, you have HIV or you can prove you told your partner you are HIV positive and you took reasonable steps to avoid passing HIV on to your partner. Lawyers think that if you use condoms every time you have sex, and for the entire duration of sex, you would have a good defence if transmission did occur. If you are being investigated, or you think that someone may make a complaint against you, it’s important you get good advice and support from an HIV support organisation. You need to find an experienced lawyer straight away before you make any statement to the police. In the UK, the Terrence Higgins Trust helpline, THT Direct, can help you find both these; you can speak to them in confidence on 0808 802 1221. You may also want to speak to THT Direct or another support organisation if you are thinking of making a complaint. You can find more useful information on the Terrence Higgins Trust website. This page was last reviewed in October 2020. It is due for review in October 2023. Take care and God bless
