I love how this show completely neglects the naval aspects of Halo. Ships can just come and go to whatever system they please without having to fight or sneak through existing blockades. The guy who helped make the show, Steve I think his name is, said that he’s so glad that he has a military background and incorporated it into the show… pfffft. What an insult to both the military and to Halo. I guess also having Master Cheeks with a beard and Kai with Pink hair that is too long is within military regulations? Not a single salute given and not a tactic made for any of the fight scenes. What a joke.

I also don't understand why this could not have been Chief and Cortana's first meeting. Alternate timeline is no excuse, but it's the current go-to lately. Also Original Halsey is much better than the show Halsey, who really looks like psychopath. Halsey ain't.

Kwan's story was very clearly the story that the show runners had already written before they were tasked with the Halo IP. This is a fairly common issue where a company will buy rights to an already successful IP, then grab a script that is already finished and attempt to just alter it to wrap a Skin of the IP around it. Halo's Skin, looked great. As a game-to-live-action project, it looked just like the game. Alien/ship/armor designs, all were pretty close to spot on. Of course, that's where it stopped. How great would it have been if they just followed the first game. Waaay easier to write a script from scratch. Master Chief is a legend. People know about him. A ship comes out of a jump during a battle. Aliens are attacking, chaos is everywhere. Master Chief is tasked with taking Cortana, the ships military AI, and protecting her because she has new intel, and is full of military secrets that can't fall into enemy hands. MC escapes the ship, crash lands on this weird ring thinggy, and begins trying to go gather up the survivors, while the mystery of what this giant ring is grows in the background. As the season progresses, they learn more about the structure, ultimately discovering that it's a super weapon, and then .. the flood. Military action sci-fi turned sci-fi horror. Some of the cinematography in this show was awesome, some of it was way below par. The effects were passible, but could have been better. The utter destruction of all the characters was unacceptable. You cannot establish a hero character by turning him in to an emotional mess in the first episode, then have him remain an emotional mess throughout, only to never learn to process his emotions, but to have to have a sentient AI take him over in order for him to do what he was fucking raised to do from childhood. If you want anyone to care about his emotional journey, you have to firmly establish what he has been for his entire adult/professional/whole life. It's also okay to let the humans be the good guys. It's from their perspective. There's a hostile alien race that wants to exterminate the humans. That's a good enough reason to fight back. The humans didn't do them wrong. They just hate humans and want to murder everyone. They don't really need a believable motivation. At least not at all in the first season. You subtly slip in questions of ethics, and morality, and of the spartans origins, and all that. Then you leave those unanswered for future seasons. YOU HAVE TO ESTABLISH THE WAY THINGS ARE, FOR CHANGE TO HAVE ANY IMPACT ON THE AUDIENCE. They spent all of 3 minutes establishing what the spartans are, then launched straight into their dark creation, and the spartans dealing with it. IT had zero impact because of it.

Halo 4 explored Chief's humanity well because it didn't make him any less of a badass, or any worse of a person. It instead puts Chief into new scenarios which challenge him as a person, makes him have to face struggles he can't just punch or shoot through. Game Chief would never have tried to gas Halsey, nor would he have broken the Geneva convention and had sex with a prisoner.

Remember people, 10 years ago Neil Bloomkamp & Peter Jackson wanted to make a Halo movie. They had a draft for a script and Bloomkamp produced that amazing "Halo: Landfall" short film (if you haven´t seen it already, it´s here on youtube), as a "prove of concept" thing. The project went nowhere, because Microsoft & the Hollywood studio couldn´t agree on how to split the financing and profits and Bloomkamp/ Jackson then abandoned the project and instead worked on District 9 together. Instead, we got this raging dumpsterfire here....

To recover from this abysmal writing, I would like to see Season 2 start with them putting Chief in a coma so they can extract Cortana from his brain and put her in a chip that goes into his helmet... just like they even show in the opening credits of the show! While this is happening, the fall of Reach begins. Chief wakes up and then story beats from the original canon can pick up from there leading to them escaping on the Pillar of Autumn, stumbling across the ring and then he gets cortana back. I don't know how else you could recover from what they've done to these characters.

Cortana takes over Chiefs body. But uses pelican to save the day. Why couldn’t they use the pelican earlier and have Kai carry the artifact out. Why didn’t they try shoot the prophets? This was the PERFECT moment for Cortana to come to chief when he’s down and say if we work together, we can beat them all. Chief says “you’re on” and the halo theme fades in, they take out all the covenant together whilst the pelican flies in knocking Atriox out of the way and killing the hoard of sangheili.

Waiting to bring the pelican till the end is smart from a tactical perspective. That was their escape plan for both the Spartans and relics. If it was shot down they would have a very difficult time getting off world. Not till there are no alternatives left would you risk bringing that ship into battle. A lot of people defending not trying to kill the prophets because they don’t know who they are and seem to be non-combatants. Here’s what the writers should have done: -Spartan tries to kill the prophets but energy shields stop the bullet. Covenant go berserk at that and Spartans realize must be important. -A Grunts plasma shot goes stray and hits the shield of the Prophet. Spartans witness an Elite smash the Grunts skull in for that. They realize the prophets must be important.

Sorry to break it to you but the legacy of halo is already burnt to the ground. Halo 4, 5 and now Infinite's massive failure and incompetency by 343 and then this show. I barely played Halo 4, didn't bother with 5 and played Infinite for 10 hours total during Christmas month. I'll stick to every so often replaying one of the original trilogy + Reach. Halo as it exists today is a dead franchise and you can thank 343 and MS for that.

Yeah I agree with you on the “deconstructing the hero” bit. I really wish they could have been bothered to go through the source material and while they initially could be forgiven for thinking the games were just shallow glorifications of violence and war, there are deeper, more mature themes at least hinted towards. We don’t need to be told directly that it’s not just a story about good guy with guns blows up bad guy aliens. The main characters are brain washed children cruelly kidnapped and experimented on in secret by a sociopathic, once-in-a-millenia, super genius with a savior complex who is employed by a fascist military government to create super soldiers capable of crushing an insurrection in order to avoid a war that has the potential to send humanity back to the dark ages. Then an overwhelmingly more advanced conglomeration of fanatically religious alien zealots happens to stumble upon humanity and subsequently make it their mission to wipe out every last human in the galaxy. That’s just scratching the surface, there’s so much to unpack and explore and they could have used that to create a truly mature thought provoking narrative while also retaining that badass energy. All of it was right there to at the very least to draw inspiration from, but they kinda threw it in the trash. Idk man, I don’t expect to have all of my wishes catered to, but some respect for the source material would have been appreciated.

Also Original Halsey is much better than the show Halsey, who really looks like psychopath. Halsey ain't. This is also why I really don't like how they messed up Halsey, Cortana, and John's very complex relationships. This dialogue here, is better than a lot of the clips I have seen.

@@AzureRoxe Elites (Sangheili) have been more Brutish In Halo Reach, 4 and 5, but they're weren't so much they were stupid. What i've seen of the Brutes/ Jiralhanae, looks spot on for them though. Though there are smarter than Halo writers utilize them. Other things I noticed are UNSC uniforms. The Marine gear and armor is Halo, but the UNSC Navy offficer reminds me of ME's officer design. I like that officer uniform though.

8 hours. 8 hours to play Halo: Reach, and Halo: CE. That 4 hours for each game would help them alot more than never picking up the games or to even read the books. 4 hours playing Reach you see the Covernant begin the fall of Reach, how it impacted not only the UNSC but also the insurectionists, and how truely powerful not only the Covernant is but also the spartans in the same timeframe. 4 hours of Combat Evolved you get to see the ring for the first time, learning what it is, why it is there, the power it can hold, and maybe (if your playing on easy) learning about the horrors that is beneath the surface of the ring, can change everything. 8 hours is all it takes and the rest of the story can write itself. If you're gonna make a video game TV adaption that is the best way to do so.

if I'd recommend this show to anyone. I'd tell them to just watch episode 1, 3, 5, and 9. If anything, this show had two opposing teams working on it. One team wanted to injected a bunch of woke cutting room floor ideas from Picard and shoehorn them into an already strong franchise. The other was just a bunch of keno halo fans that actually put in the effort towards the set design, references, choreography, and cinematic styling of the show. It's obvious where both teams work shined the most. It's just a huge shame that the latter team didn't have more creative control over the project. I'd give this season a good 6 out of 10. It's in the camp of "a fun casual watch" but not much more. I genuinely do hope season 2 does take the ratings seriously and fix what was clearly dragged it back from becoming something so much better.

In the books the Spartans are his family not even the other branches of the military. They where brought up (brainwashed) to think they were the defenders of humanity and when most of the Spartan 2's died he just went along with his established goal of defending humanity. Now that humanity is more capable and doesn't really need him he's finding out what is really important to him. Which is his established relationships (remaining Spartans, Cortana, Halsey, Etc).

8:30 I think one of the issues with the close combat is that Spartans are very fast but not like superhuman fast (like captain america vs spidermans powers) which means that they are too fast for normal filming but too slow for the bullet time of the flash/quicksilver etc. which makes everything about the scene just feel off and its the same with when Kai was running after Halsey's ship, she just looks off.

I never thought i'd say this for anything related to one of my most favourite franchises but THANK GOD season 1 is over! This season was terrible! On top of the closest the covenant got to being a threat being makee, the halo barely shown on screen, half the season being focused on kwan and chief being humanized way too much(and kai too omg only vanaak and riz were actual spartans this season!) even to the point of chief LITERALLY FALLING IN LOVE WITH MAKEE, A COVENANT SPY we also had no arbiter whatsoever, not even mentioned by his name before becoming the arbiter, no guilty spark(the monitor) and no flood. Halsey attempting to fake her death with a flash clone and escaping reach is the only plot twist that was noteworthy in this season. At this point i'm relying on halsey being that stereotypical selfish scientist to save the show, especially since even if we do get the arbiter and the flood chances are they will both be butchered just as much as chief was. I don't know if i want to watch season 2 if it ever comes out after seeing season 1. This show is a punch to the face for halo fans, especially fans like me who grew up with this franchise. Oh and chief having to literally DIE for him to even SLIGHTLY resemble chief from the games and the expanded universe, the most importsnt character of all of halo is DEAD!

Throw it into the garbage, make a show that is canon, respects the lore and understands that Halo is not only about Chief and his feelings... but knowing how this always goes and the fact Season 2 was already approved, they are just going to double down on this shit.

I just realized something. Cortana taking over chiefs body (why…) is a plot point taken from the early seasons of RED VS BLUE. These writers are stealing plot points from RvB. A fan show from more than a decade ago.

Sadly history has shown that big gaming companies HATE when fans make private projects based on their IPs and even more so when those projects gain more popularity than what they, the developers, are putting out. I mean just look at Nintendo. They've tried time and time again to kill the Smash Melee scene by not allowing Smash to be broadcasted. These massive companies HATE it when their fans prove to the world that they have more creativity and understanding of what makes the story and franchise unique and special.

I saw Kai chase Dr. Halsey down the hall to stop her from getting to the escape pod, it's almost like the writers forgot right before this scene Kai literally ran like 3 times faster than those marines, she looked like the flash as she jumped onto the escaping aircraft... Let’s not gloss over the fact that John is actually dead now. His heart literally stopped and he died when Cortana mind fucked him. Now granted it was something of an improvement but now we have to go through all the bullshit drama this causes in season 2 instead of focusing on what matters. The fucking Halo ring and the Covenant glassing human world after human world. And also now that John is dead and Makee is dead(thank Christ)…….who the fuck is going to turn on the keys??? So they’re going to find some BS way to bring either John or Makee back alive so that the plot can continue.

I hate seeing such a fantastic franchise be destroyed by people who just dont care enough to keep it genuine. This show is such a disaster in every way. Forward unto dawn and landfall easily trumped this show. None of us wanted mastercheeks! It all comes down to passion, or lack there of. They didn't play the games or consume any media because they weren't fans of it. They didn't experience the complexity of the lore because of personal interest, like us. Art isn't really considered bad to me unless you have no passion for the subject. That shows through your creation how much you care about it. I hate acting like I'm some snooty jagoff but, There's no love put into American entertainment. Everyone focuses on diversity, fancy visuals, nostalgia bait, or making a quick buck but, that all means nothing if the story lacks heart. They should've paid Xperia, Joe Staten, and all the halo youtubers to direct a halo series we deserve instead of saying screw it.

The combat in the show feels too fluid. It’s good but just too smooth in their movements. Gotta say this is the most Halo feeling episode in the show. Hearing the Halo theme while there’s a fight scene was so cool. And then when Cortana takes over Chief’s body he actually becomes Chief. Which is a bit strange but I’d take that over Jimmy Rings

Unless some company started production on weapons/vehicles that shared the external visuals of modern day ones but using modern tech and construction methods, those things would likely be pretty rare and cost a fortune to acquire. Those things would likely be family heirlooms or owned by collectors of vintage hardware, not the standard loadout of a bunch of terrorists or used by the military.

The condor-Cortana thing also came directly to my mind. I was asking myself the same question and the only explanation I could somehow go with was that cortana took more like a backseat role and only reacted to direct orders other than acting on her own, because of that whole taking over your body thing. Still would be quiet stupid considering she wouldn't even bring up the option of just blowing up everything with the ship flying in a pretty save spot above all that but we have to work with what we get

To be as fair as possible, if Cortana could control the ship without controlling the armor, then she could have flown them directly there instead of trying to tell John how to navigate through the gravity anomaly (which I hate was even a thing). So apparently, she can't remotely fly the ship until she's doing it through John as well.
