For me, this is the most pleasant and comfortable C-drama to watch in weeks. I can't help but grin at ML&FL's cute CP, and laugh at the funny roles of all the supporters. Definitely my "feel good" C drama of the year!

Honestly, this drama is perfect for me right now. My job is quite busy and somewhat stressful, so when I get home I really want to watch something light that isn't going to make me work super hard to figure out the plot. I thought the styling is pretty, and the humor is cute.

This is a very entertaining drama. The story line is humorous and well put together. Loved the CP, strong FL who played up the “weak, pretty lady” but actually is smart and well skilled in martial arts. Loved the pretentious moments. No super annoying characters.

I loved the costumes and the hairstyles and the nods to ancient makeup! This is the first CDrama that has ever given me the visual illusion of walking into the ancient Chinese silk scrolls from when I was an art student. I love especially when the high status ladies are gathered. Also the make up is done so beautifully. Disney's producers could learn a lot from it.

The author who wrote the original novel, Yue Xia Die Ying, is one of my favorites but her current work has definitely edged towards extremely harmless and fluffy. It's basically slowly become the literary equivalent of cotton candy. Fluffy and light, but without much substance to keep you coming back for more. Which is a shame because they can write a decently compelling story with high stakes and drama. It just doesn't seem to be what they're interested in writing anymore.

To me the best part of the drama is the relationship between the emperor and the crown prince (I'm on ep19) like...is it for real? Are we allowed to have an emperor who isn't out to get his own sons? But instead actually supports his crown prince? As it should be? Since you're intending to hand the the empire to him and don't want it to be ruined? (Well, hopefully don't want it to be ruined) Like damn, those scenes with the emperor & crown prince were the best. That's how an emperor & his heir should be.

The moment I started watching this drama I thought about you and your claim for better styling, I said Avenue x is going to appreciate it. As regards the rest, for me, from time to time I watch one of these dramas just as company. I have 40/45 minutes to think about nothing and cook a risotto, fold laundry, do my nails, crochet and criticise a little bit. I need my time of light and happy watching. I' m not going to find the secret of Life here so I go with the flow. The same happened to me with Road Home and Warm in a cold night. I'm enjoying them quite a lot in this way, but I couldn't do it with Chong Zi, not even for the ML, who I really like. Generally you always have a couple of points that are spot on, so thank you for all the thought you put here.

I wish to see more of Yue Xia Die Ying works to be adapted... like 何为贤妻 (To Be a Virtuous Wife), a bit similar to Minglan, but the MC is an unfavored di daughter and more into the backyard struggles, but tamed, compared to Yanxi Palace. But I also wish to see more complex, blood-seeking story too. I heard they're going to adapt 将门嫡女之定乾坤 (The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage), with Wu Lei as the ML (Xie Jing Xing), which is something that I look forward to. I love the blood-thirsty MC Shen Miao in that novel. Satisfying face slapping.

Yes, it's lighthearted but sometimes we need agony relief. ML impressed me more in Autumn Balled but Chong Zi was unwatchable. Haven't seen the Fl before and her 'frailty act' went on a little to long, but overall she was very likeable and capable. I'm still engrossed in Twin Flower and Miss Chun.

Romance of a Twin flower is another light-hearted one which may be on the same par with Royal Rumors. The ML looks like he walked straight from the sets of The Romance of Tiger and Rose to this one. 😄 Very pleasing to the eyes when it comes to visual aesthetics and some how reminds me of " A dream of splendor" with FL wanting to set up business. The second wife/mistress from this drama was also in " A dream of splendor". Happy "switch-off-your-brain-&-watch-cdrama"

Jeremy Tsui (that's what's he's billed as on viki) is one of my favorite Chinese Actors. I'm so looking forward to his drama with Han Zhang (probably my absolute favorite Chinese actor) I loved this drama because although it is simple and more heavy on the comedy than I prefer in costume dramas there is a lot of heart in the characters. I subscribe to the Arron Sorkin style of writing Characters first, plot second style. If I love the characters then I can accept a lot of silliness and crazy in the plot.

I love the actress who plays princess Jiamin, really good, she added some spice. Further, Royal rumours is a bit less silly than The twin flower. Latter I could not watch because the FLs role is the same stupid teenage girl with alcohol problem from Good by my princess, she even fall of the cliff again and changed personality. Royal Rumours is good enough watch for just relaxing and resting. Another good point is that it is short.:D

The problem with psychological distress in dramas is that is achieved most of the time by tropes or by having people do stuff that doesnt make sense, most of the time you don't understand character motivations cause many of them are just at the level of being plot devices.

I am liking this drama so far. It's neither super interesting or extraordinary nor super boring. It's watchable, as in when you have nothing else to watch kind of drama. I have watched FL in other dramas in supporting roles, and I don't like her acting. She acts slightly more than needed. She does the same here. but somehow it fits here. Also people from the enemy country are shown for comedy, which is not to my taste. What I am enjoying is, the bonding between the cp and emperor, there's no life and death hatred between the princes, the minister playing court politics are not that serious. It's a very casual drama.

I enjoyed the "light touch" of enemy assassins being glad to be captured, so they could get a good meal. And the shadow play torture scenes to force confessions. It was amusing and somewhat refreshing. FL kind of annoyed me; and she does have a mildly dark side, being so manipulative - but there was some reasonably clever script writing where she manoeuvres the unwitting into doing her bidding, so that was amusing. Tend to agree with all AvenueX's points, as usual. 🙂

@@Kayenne54 separate from the drama I too enjoyed the enemy army scenes. They are funny. But when put together with the drama, it conflicts. If the enemy army can be so easily manipulated, why are cp, king and the court so concerned? That is what I don't like.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on however much of Chong Zi you can get through. I speed ran scenes with a specific actor just to see what his part in the show would be (he was also in Word of Honor), but even skipping through a bunch and only catching bits and pieces, it was abundantly clear the show as a whole was a disaster. The thing is, for me it was the male lead’s acting that really put me off, while at least in the clips I saw the female lead wasn’t awful. I’d be curious to hear your reasons for thinking the acting was subpar, from either or both of them.

I just watched the clips and I was already SOOOOOO tired 😅. And the actress' acting is horrible. It's so weird how she can get a lead role when she's horrible with acting. It's not even about skill or practice anymore. I think her face just doesn't work for acting or she just can't control her facial muscles. The dubbing doesn't suit her acting as well. The male lead's acting also reminds me of a try-hard version of Donghua Dijun haha But his acting in Royal Rumors is better.

After the Journey of ChingZi disaster (and I enjoyed the first 20 eps it was the rest that got me angry and annoyed) I was curious if Xu Zheng Xi had any other facial expressions other than RBF and if his acting is as bland and annoying as in ChongZi. To my surprise I found this dorama entertaining enough. I’m only in episode 4 and I do wanna keep watching it.

There seem to be only goofy period dramas airing right now. Coming out of The Starry Love, which made me cry despite its comedic nature, it's really hard to engage in total fluff. I'd love to have something a bit more ambitious to watch than this. Also, make-up here is so bad! 😂😂 yeah, I couldn't watch Chong Zi too.

Looking forward to the time the lead actor is given a better comedic script. Based upon his prior acting performances, he has a subtle physical humor that's yet been able to spread his wings. It would need to be more contemporary as historical costumes can tend to hide the subtle full body physical humor that a better actor like him,, can bring. He'd also Excell in a partnership humor drama with someone like the lead in Sword Snow Stride..think about it.

I thought the lead actor was quite good in "Be My Princess." He played a modern-day highly regarded method actor who completely immersed himself in a Ming Dynasty period drama. After a head injury, he actually believes he is that fictional character, and mayhem results. Not Tolstoy or O'Neill but quite entertaining.

Agree, this is not a masterpiece but throughly enjoyable; in older Hollywood days, this would be those well made B-grade movies, low budget but the production made it looks ok. Almost dropped this after episode 1 as the dubbing sounds problematic. Once I got passed that, the story is well paced and there’s a good deal of humor in the plots. Not an excellent drama, but 24 episodes is the right length that make this an enjoyable watch

I know this video is about 'Royal Rumors' but I just happened to hear your opinion on 'Chongzi' and I maybe in the minority here but I disagree with the ML and FL of Chongzi. I thought both did a great job, they acted their roles very effectively. In contrast, Jeremy in 'Royal Rumors' did not fit the part; also I feel the ML and FL in 'Royal Rumors' while both are beautiful people, they just seemed forced into situations that look awkward, like her falling on him, him catching her, etc.; did not see the chemistry at all. Oh well, I suppose it's subjective to the eyes of the viewers.

Watching this with twin flower. So far I enjoy this more. The FL on twin flower just doesn’t fit the drama. I get distracted with her bony fragile face that is contrast to her character. I watch it for the ML but the FL is ruining it for me. I wish they’ve cast diff FL. No hate for the girl but I don’t think she’s for period drama. I also watched the other drama mentioned with same ML and drop it pretty fast, not due to FL but the story in general is stupid to me. I like watching this ML, he acts like younger version on Dong Hua from TMPB and ELOD.

For me this drama is much better then Twin Flower, Chong Zi, Starry Love and recent Miss Chun is a Litigator, which I dropped all. Chong Zi was such a disappointment- they had a very good cast, but FL actress ruined the drama completely.
