There's certain film versions of stories that will always be the standard for me (i.e. Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, George C Scott as Patton, Christopher Reeve in his first Superman film, etc.) This version of Dickens' famous tale is the standard for me. this version is definitely underrated and I have no idea why. I'm surprised it isn't treated like one of those classics that gets played every Xmas with great fanfare. i especially like it because it brings back happy memories of seeing it as a child with my mom (who is no longer living). as she drove home from the theatre she was singing Thank You Very Much and every time she told someone about the movie she would laugh and say "the whole town was so happy when he died they danced on his grave and sang thank you very very very much!"

Albert Finney and Alistair Sim - my two absolute favorite renditions of Ebenezer Scrooge. Their portrayal of the cold-hearted Victorian usurer and the man redeemed of the heavy burden of his painful and sad past were given in equal measures of brilliance. The joy of their bubbly, high energy cheer and delight brings a smile to my face every time. Truly, Sim and Finney portrayed a man freed from the weight of his past and who reveled in the freedom the joy of his redemption brought.
@chaburchak6 жыл бұрын
Those two and George C. Scott as well...I love Edward Woodward's Ghost of Christmas Present, the way he taunts Scrooge with his own words. "Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?" Great delivery by the Equalizer...

I also like the 1999 made for television version starring Patrick Stewart. It takes its inspiration from the 1934 Alistair Sim version and is truer to the original Dickens novella than most. The ending was every bit as freeing and transformative as this one.

I think the reason that this succeeds is because Finney is one of the few to realise Scrooge has descended into misery because of life circumstances and bad choices not because he's a pantomime villain out to be nasty for the sake of it. He shows that well. In addition, the Bricusse score is superb and allows Finney to go to the darkest places of his character.We could, however, lose the hell scene - only included to make it a big enough part for Guinness to sign up

I guess because a Christmas carol had always been a relatively dark spooky ghost story up until this version - it would be like if someone in the modern era did a musical of aliens or something, even if it had a catchy song like this it would take a long time for people to come around to the big change of tone from what they were used to.
