Thanks for watching! A Christmas Carol was one of my favorite stories growing up, so I’m really excited to share this video with you. Let me know-did anything surprise you, or change how you see the story? I’d love to hear your thoughts!✨And yes, I know 'Carol of the Bells' is everywhere in this video, but it’s my favorite.😊 If you enjoyed this darker side of history, don’t forget to like and share to help spread the word about the channel!🎄

Christmas Past had the greatest impact on my life, throughout the years. Albert Finney’s 1970 Scrooge used a very off book design for the Past’s look, however the journey that Ghost took Scrooge on was very poignant to me, watching this version of Christmas Carol 10 years after it’s making, loyally waiting and enraptured at 10 and continuing in my middle age now. This has always been one of my favorite stories. I knew about many of the influences that inspired Dickens to write it, but this was the most comprehensive video that I have seen of it to date. As one who has learned from the story at a young age, I have always tried to keep generosity and kindness on my heart not only around Christmas time, but throughout the year. However, if I were to get a visit from the Ghost of Christmas Past, I would cherish seeing those who are no longer with us today.

"But I am sure that I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round…as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely" No matter what I went through as a child, Christmas was always special. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is the one whom I've always been the most fascinated with. Not only does he represent people's fear of death, as was mentioned in the video, but he also represents anxiety towards the future. With the past and the present, we have the advantage of knowing what they contain. But the future is a dark abyss that could have all sorts of nasty surprises awaiting their day. Each ticking second slowly brings our death closer towards us in time, and we don't know when it will be. As Scrooge found out, there's no guarantee that any one of us will live to see next Christmas. Another idea that was mentioned in the video and attributed to Victorian times, but is still very common today, is the belief that poverty is a personal failing. Whether then or now, I think that people convince themselves of this because they don't want to admit that it could happen to them. Most people would need nothing more than a sudden job loss to throw them into poverty, so the livelihoods of most people is a constant source of uncertainty. It's also another nasty thing that the future might hold for any one of us.
@jolene9732
@jolene9732 29 күн бұрын
I always found it interesting that he did not speak. I saw this as allowing Scrooge to reflect on the things he saw and FELT with the other two spirits. He was FEELING the pain of his treatment towards others and the pain of not letting human kindness into his life. He begged for another opportunity to make "mankind HIS business" not knowing if it would be granted. Thus the ELATION he experienced when he realized the opportunity WAS granted.

But he also represents one part of the ancient Germanic concept of time as the shadow of things that may come to pass if certain events remain unaltered. Rather than being purely fatalistic I would say that the ancient Germanic People had a very sensible view of time that was common with most folks of Indo-European ancestry as exemplified by the 3 NorniR, Udhr "That Which Is" (the past), Verdhandi "That Which Is Becoming" (Now) and Skuld, "That Which Should Be." Note how the past is a set thing then the present is seen as in flux and the future is, as with the Ghost Of Christmas Future, a shadow of things that will come to pass if certain events remain unaltered. Another thing that's interesting viewed this way is how someone becomes traumatized, as with a fear of dogs learned at a young age from a dog attacking them. That has happened, it's there in their memory and that set even influences how the person will view dogs. Again, it makes perfect sense!

My favorite ghost was the Ghost of Christmas Past. That one reveled the potential for good in Scrooge when he was young and detailed young Scrooge's trauma in life that molded him into the man he became. He could have been good and loving and happy, but he allowed the darkness to overtake him when he took it upon himself to be responsible for holding so tightly to every bit of wealth he could grasp. But the ghost that terrified me the most was the ghost of Christmas yet to come. I was so terrified of that one that it was the main character in paralyzing, recurrent nightmares that awakened me trying to scream but unable to expel any sound or move to roll over or raise myself out of bed. I would lie there, sweating profusely, but unable to even open my eyes. Scared the hell out of me for a long time. I think the dreams may have been influenced by a traumatic death of a friend in 2nd grade who was runover by a car and killed. Before that happened, I had never known anyone to die. It was a concept that did not exist in my mind. Children are probably much better equipped these days to deal with the facts of life and death than I was in the second grade. In the early 1950tys, we only had small black and white televisions, and they offered very limited programing. I don't remember learning anything about death from Leave It to Beaver or Queen for a Day.

I remember as a sixth grader I had the privilege to go to Radio City Music Hall to see the Christmas show. I also went there in fourth and fifth grade. The movie Scrooge starring Albert Finney had been released. I truly liked that version because it closer to the original Dickens story with variations! After the movie, there was a Nativity scene with live animals across the stage! This twelve year old lost her mind! It was very well produced and will stay etched in my memory. Ebenezer Scrooge: [on Tiny Tim] Tell me, Spirit... Will he live? Ghost of Christmas Present: I see an empty place at this table. I see a crutch without an owner, carefully preserved. If these shadows remain unaltered by the future, the child will die. Ebenezer Scrooge: No. Say he'll be spared. Ghost of Christmas Present: If these shadows remain unaltered by the future, none other of my species will find him here. But if he is to die, then let him die...! "AND DECREASE THE SURPLUS POPULATION!" Ebenezer Scrooge: You use my own words against me? Ghost of Christmas Present: Yes! So perhaps, in the future, you will hold your tongue until you have discovered where the surplus population is, and WHO it is. It may well be that, in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than MILLIONS like this poor man's child.

You missed a key point in the story- why did Scrooge spend Christmas alone at school? Why did his father not love him? And how is it that when last we see him as a schoolchild, his older sister is telling him how "Father is much happier now (that he remarried)"? The same reason Scrooge shuns Fred- Scrooge's mother died giving birth to Scrooge, and his father resented the boy for it. Fred's mother (Scrooge's sister) died giving birth to Fred, and Scrooge resents him for it. Women dying in childbirth was considerably more common in Dickens' time than it is now- he merely had to hint at it and his readership understood. "She died a woman- with children" the ghost said. "ONE child," Scrooge replied. "Your nephew, Fred" the ghost said in an accusatory manner.

In fact, Fan is described in the book as Scrooge's younger sister, Little Fan. The idea that Scrooge's mother died giving him birth and that Fan died giving birth to Fred was an invention of the 1951 movie starring Alistair Sim, and is repeated in the George C Scott version. But it is true that Dickens never explains what is meant by "Father is so much kinder now"

The past has always haunted me, to the point where my dreams are actually distorted memories of places I can no longer go because they have been torn down, including the high school where I graduated from over thirty years ago. I still dream that I'm going down the hallway of the school toward the room where the drama class took place, and the drama teacher, whose surname was Gilchrist, was waiting for me. These dreams are especially hard on me because I only had two sessions of the drama class in my senior year at high school. This was due to the fact that the following week the morning and afternoon drama classes were merged into one and I could not attend the class due to the fact that I was in the school's work program. I was so upset about this that I vowed I would say I had two years of drama in high school on any official form.

This was a lovely representation of literary history, thank you for the narrative & beautiful illustrations. My favourite Ghost would be of Christmas Past. It's always good to reflect on what has gone by, to learn from it & appreciate that it was of that moment, so as not to beat yourself up too much when things don't work out well.

I loved this video! A Christmas Carol is my all-time favorite. There is a book called Miss Marley that is now a tradition for me too which tells the story of Jacob Marley's past.

I've always loved the Christmas Carol, and seeing this story about it was eye opening and refreshing 😍 ❤, and honestly I think all the ghost's and a good talk with scrooge after he sees all three would have an effect on me 😅 thank you so much and I loved your dumbledore reference at the end there 😊

Poverty today can never be on a scale like Victorian England. Reality was far harsher back then And Mortality rates at a younger age were far far higher. From the candle light to The Electric light. Today it's too easy it's all here for us. Hardship is prevalent and sadly will be every generation. But in those days it was more widespread! God bless us Everyone! And kindness costs nothing in this World. And that's what this world Sorely is lacking badly

Excellent, really enjoyed the characters and interpretation of this timeless story. A story which has strong similarities with the behaviour of the wealthy figures behind the big corporations today, well done, it certainly made me look at this story in a totally different way.

This is a story with lessons that the wealthy of our time could still benefit from learning. The wealth disparity gap is still obscenely wide, and many people still struggle to meet what should be basic human rites (such as food, shelter, proper reliable medical care, drinkable water, and safety from harm). That there are countries that still don't regard these as basic human rites (such as the USA and Israel) is horrific. We can do better, and the fact that we have to rely on charity, and not our governments that we already pay a significant cut of our salaries in the form of taxes, is disgusting.

G. K. Chesterton pointed out that Dickens was really using his Christmas Carol to, in essence, dispel the notion that people's intrinsic value can be estimated by the size of their purse and social standing. Hence the use and refutation of the enlightened, Darwinian attitude towards the relationship between the weaker and stronger in society: i.e., "if [the impoverished] would rather die... they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population." Ebenezer is forced to confront the question of what makes one person a member of the "surplus population" and another not? Specifically, on what grounds can Scrooge determine he himself is not a member of the "surplus population"? On what grounds can he determine that Tiny Tim is not? The enlightenment and the consequential shift in views regarding morality and the intrinsic, transcendent value of human life, must really be applauded for inspiring Dickens to compose this timeless novelette - if not directly, then indirectly.

Yeah, it's scary to have no health care, paying rent b/c nobody can afford a real home that they can own. Not owning the land your mobile home is on, low wages & getting put off the land your mobile units is on b/c the real owners want the land developed. No union jobs w/job security, universal basic income, health care, free schools... be careful who you cast your vote for. Cold, hard reality is scary

Thank you for this beautiful video and narration about my favourite book. I read it every year at Christmas, or see a play or film of the story. It is a powerful redemption story and the characters are rounded and drawn into the story exquisitely. Bob Cratchit is my favourite character for his forbearance of Scrooge and love of family.

This novel reminds me a bit of the near death experiences that so many people talk about nowadays. Maybe Charles Dickens had an experience like that? Very creative people like him very often have a feeling for these things.
