I am not Jewish but Sonya I am here all the time watching all your meals because I want to incorporate Kosher eating in my lifestyle. One thing I think I will try one day is that sourdough bread. I could use some of that bread for a great sandwich 😂 😂 Thank you for sharing your life.
@mariakoufalis14872 жыл бұрын
Olive oil tip. The darker the oil the stronger the flavor. That is because it’s the first cold press. The lighter the colour the milder the taste. That is second or third press. Always aim to get olive oil that is sourced from one region., ie: Greece, Italy etc. Stay away from blends. Finally a dark bottle is best so as not to have light penetrating the bottle.

I had friends in Mississippi/Arkansas who invited me for thanksgiving. Of course they had the “traditional” foods, but they also had a lovely artichoke dish and a treat that they called “monkey bread”. The latter was basically the same as cinnamon rolls, only they rolled the dough as balls in the mixture and piled the dough balls in a pan and poured more sauce over the dough and baked. (PS. The dough was not leavened with yeast-just baking soda and baking powder.) So. Yes. One can do pretty much anything one wants to celebrate Thanksgiving. Although I think cranberries and chestnuts are pretty important.

We love roasted Brussel sprouts - if you cook them in water, sometimes they get bitter - but never when they are roasted. So good! We also put garlic on them when we roast them.

Astounding, you've outdone yourself! What a beautiful way to show gratitude. As a child, my family celebrated Thanksgiving in the traditional US way. As an adult, I wanted something different for my children. I began making foods from my heritage which is Sicilian, German, English, and Irish. Until last year that is. My DNA test results show that I'm Ashkenazi which I had no idea! This year, I'll be incorporating Jewish food. How fortunate am I to be able to share this information with my family and introduce them to some new traditions! Shalom.

Your entire meal looks delicious, Sonya; your corn is great, as well. You could add a dusting of Parmesan cheese on top of that, too. It tastes so good - and you can even throw them on the grill like that with all the herbs, spices, butter, and Parm 😋 I make those smashed potatoes, too .. I cut up some onion and garlic and put it in my mini-chopper, adding a little bit of water to it so that it makes a slurry. After I microwave the potatoes till they're cooked about half-way, I put them in a frying pan with some olive oil. I spoon the slurry over the potatoes, adding salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, parsley, and a little bit of cayenne pepper (which is optional). I brown one side of the potatos, flip them over, top with a little more slurry, and brown the other side. They are absolutely delicious .. the slurry gets browned, too, so the potatos are a little crunchy on the outside but soft and tender inside.

I know I'm incredibly late watching this, I had covid which brought on a lupus flare, the longest and most severe one I've had to date. You are amazing, this is absolute perfection. (Cling film, plastic wrap whichever you call it, is supposed to be stored in the freezer.) That way it only sticks to the item needing to be covered and not itself. Saves a lot of effort and, in my case, having the equivalent of a toddler tantrum when trying to bake etc

A small tip about washing mushrooms. It’s perfectly ok and expected that you wash them just before you use them. The recommendation is to not wash them in advance and then put them in your fridge to use later on in the week because that is how they will not stay firm.

Awesome recipes. I, too, wash my mushrooms. Have you ever of using sage in your stuffing? I know it's not a traditional herb used in Jewish cooking, but it's so delicious used with onions and celery. I'm definitely going to be using mushrooms in my stuffing, this year and roasting a chicken instead of a turkey. And your sourdough loaves are works of art! You inspire this old lady to want to cook from scratch more! Thank you!

I have never cooked with sage before but you peaked my interest
@katebligh11562 жыл бұрын
@@SonyasPrep Sage is the single most delicious herb to use with mushrooms. It's also great for making a tea when you have a cold (boil it with garlic and then add honey.) There's just a gentle warning: large quantities of sage can induce miscarriage in expectant mothers, but it would take a serious volume for it to be dangerous in this regard.

There is a great video by Alton Brown on his show called Good Eats where he actually tests how much water mushrooms absorb when washed/soaked. I highly recommend that specific episode. The mushrooms don’t take on as much water as we’ve been made to believe. Super interesting!

Sonya. Everything looks so delicious. I wash my mushrooms. I don’t soak them but I do wash them. I am one of the few people on the planet that absolutely loves brussels sprouts. Just so they are not over cooked. Back in the day decades ago I used to eat them with a cheese sauce or hollandaise over them. These days I like them cooked in the oven Similar to what you did. I’ll definitely have to try that honey. Balsamic glaze though. Everything is just yummy looking. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

I love them (grown up with them as a winter veg in Scotland); plain steamed with a little butter and garlic salt, or tossed once steamed with pancetta (could use turkey bacon), chestnuts and Madeira in a pan.
