That 90s Show is back with a second season and less familiar faces from the first show.
No Fez , No Eric , No Kelso , No Jackie , and obviously no Hyde.
But at least we still have Donna , Bob , Kitty , Red , Mitch , and Leo.
In all seriousness, this season provides audiences with a look into the lives of it's leads.
Leia , Jay , Nate , Nikki , Gwen , and Ozzie .

Folly? Modern practices? Hey now, there's a place called the United Kingdom where seasons have always been that length; and rumor has it they've made some decent television from time to time. It's even true that a show can make the transition from one to the other in a revival. Most people like the new Frasier, for example. And Degrassi moved in the other direction; I kept calling it "new" Degrassi even though almost all Degrassi is new, since there's as much television in a single season of the new show as in all the old combined. I will say there's probably an art to the change all the same, and maybe the 70s/90s show writers haven't made the conceptual adjustments that needed to be made. I was pretty excited that the streaming paradigm was resulting in crisper-length seasons where that was wanted; but then again, I was also excited about the fact that episodes can now be whatever length the writers think best for the story, and it's pretty clear not all have thrived under this new freedom.

Brevity has been this show's undoing. "Season" 1 being only ten episodes released all at once set during a single summer meant that the entire thing felt less like a slice of life sitcom and more like a movie that got padded with vignettes and side stories. Part 2 being 8 episodes that weren't released until more than a year later AND set a year later meant that the first half had to rush to resolve the previous season's cliffhangers before getting into new adventures. The audience hasn't had time to actually sit with these characters and get to know them, half of them still feel one dimensional 18 episodes in because we haven't really had a full season like we would have with a traditional TV show. If it weren't for Red & Kitty, nothing would be grounding these kids.

Haven't seen season two. But the biggest thing counting against what I've seen in season 1 is in that 70s show you can actually believe Kelso and Hide when they threaten eachother but the same sense of danger isn't present in that 90s show. Plus people refusing to apologize shifting the blame and continuing to scheme means the tension can actually go somewhere rather than being deflated. So the narrative holds more weight in that 70s. The characters buckling so easily could have been an opportunity to switch up the formula and add an insufferable heart warming wrapp up which would be on brand for a 90s sitcom but they didn't actually do that, and lets be honest unless they subverted the hell out of it i wouldn't want them to.

I have my criticisms as well with season/part 2 some that are similar to what you mentioned. And I feel like a lot of that is because of the more minimal episode season format with this series being on Netflix. The writers are trying to jam story arcs, character development if any into at least with this season into 8 episodes. I really feel like you need the standard amount of episodes in a season to give us something really compelling that allows time for characters to develop further and story arcs have time to breath and have story beats to them.

I’m sad to see that others felt let down by the first part of season 2 as well as I hoping it was just me. The more they focused on the kids, the less interesting/funny the season got which is sad as the first season needed to develop those characters more. Here’s hoping for a huge upswing in the second part of season 2.

Given I grew up in the 90’s. It doesn’t feel like it at all. So… they kinda miss that nostalgia bit quite a bit. Hell 95-96 had a lot going on and none is mentioned.

Fez's absence is likely connected to the Danny Masterson court case. Infamously Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Debra Jo Rupp, Kurtwood Smith, and Wilmer Valderrama wrote letters to to the court to defend Masterson's character and this news was very upsetting to the public. Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith are executive producers so they can protect their roles on the show, but the others are easily written out to avoid controversy.

No. Wilmer is busy on NCIS and other projects so that is unlikely for him. Ashton probably has other stuff going on and a family with Mila so… possibility but not likely.

Yeah the title of the show is annoying as someone who grew up in the 90's a large portion of the show didn't feel like the 90's. It didn't know what it was hence why it died on the vine. Nostalgia only works too bring old fans back in, it can't keep them if it sucks/ is incoherent

To be clear Leo does tell Hyde that he has to get back to his family. Funny considering how long Leo was away from his family and never mentioning sooner. I also believe when Leo gives Hyde his car Hyde reminds Leo that he has a son.

The writers know what happened in that 70’s show but don’t understand why it worked. It’s the same as so many current sequels and reboots which is one of many reasons why they keep failing.

What hurts is there is a lot they don't show over the year that's not the Summer. I feel if a season 3 happens. They need to have Liea, and her family actually move back to town and have a narrative that goes a whole year not just a Summer.

I'd love to see a video of yours about part 3 of that 90's show and that 70's show retrospective. I wish they mentioned the character they built Steven Hyde as he played a main role in the original series. I know Danny Masterson was sent to jail but giving one sentence to the audience of where Hyde is would've been helpful to the audience.

Can we also bring up the lack of 90s references? No reference to pokemon, something 90's kids were selling their bodies for. There is no reference to Mario party on N64, causing broken friendships or even Super Smash Brothers.

Haven’t seen the show outside of some clips so take it with a huge grain of salt. The whole aesthetic seems like a step down from that 70s show. The glossy filter really makes it hard to think it’s set in the 90s. The wardrobe isn’t great either, but the new cast seem devoid of charisma, charm, or even strong personalities. I guess that’s due to both writing and acting but it all feels very safe.

This comment section has shown me that kids involved in sub cultures meant for adults have integrated that’s sub culture into thier personality. It leads to everyone having distinctly different context/memory the same exact time in history. That 70’s show worked because most people remember that era the same. I.e. “this isnt even 90’s fr cause they didn’t talk about smart guy and digimon, gen z needs to try harder”thank you for attending my Ted talk

Something that I think needs to be taken into account is the writer's and actor's strike. Between Part one and Part two, there was a writer's and actor's strike. So writers and actors had to put down their tools and wait it out for months. Then productions had to get back to schedule, but scripts didn't the second polish they usually do. And considering how far ahead of time many of these scripts have to be written (especially the parodies that I don't want to spoil, but take a long time to produce and create) that extra polish wasn't there. But that said, I agree with Vee, the acting was a lot better. I found it a lot funnier too. And I think the addition of Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes actually worked. I feel like their presence may give the show more weight and allow a third season to go ahead as planned. (At least I hope it does, I actually did like the series, even with the missteps). The addition of Kelso's sister felt somewhat lacking. I think Kira Kosarin was a great actress for the part. But you could see where the writing strike meant that scripts didn't get a second polish or rewrite. And I felt bad for her when Nate broke up with her. Saying 'she wasn't good enough' for Nate, contrasted with the 'manipulative' character we see two episodes before. I really wanted to see her back in the show. I don't hate the show. And I know That 70s show had missteps too (not talking the final season, where the wheels fell off). But I hope it gets a third season, and I hope it gets better.
