That exact scenario happened to me once . Not with jakes but long beards. I thought I had missed when I saw a bird take flight so I got up and ran over there .... no bird was laying but the bird that flew and landed was standing there. Assuming I had missed I pulled up and shot the second bird only to find my first bird had tumbled all the way down the hill just like yours did ...... whoops!!!

My son suggested to me back in the fall that I should check your KZbin Channel out. Boy I’m glad I did. I love your postings. Your shows are great because I personally think you appeal to lots of just ordinary hunters and fisherman alike. You go in the woods, mostly on public land, and get the job done without trying to promote a product. Thank you for what you continue to produce.

CONGRATS, Catman! Been there, done that. Proud of it. I got a fired up, gobbling pair of jakes that took me an hour and a half to bring in on southern California public land. I dropped the first one as soon as I saw his head. I've got his 4 inch beard hanging proudly on my rearview mirror. OUTSTANDING video! Thanks for sharing.

The same thing happened to me on my very first turkey in 1995. I called that bird in from a ways off. He gobbled and strutted just like a long beard, so when I shot him I had no idea he was actually a jake. At the time I was still quite elated, because I had tried so hard to be successful and it worked out for me on that special April day so many years ago. I have harvested many turkeys since, but that hunt is till one of my fondest memories. Good video though, it brought back some memories for me.

Congrats on two TN birds. Nothing wrong in taking a jake, even though I'd rather take a tom. I took a boss jake last year, because him and his buddies were whipping on my decoy and I could not take it any longer.

Personally I say let the birds grow up. Kind of like shootin a button bucks when you think they're does need to identify your target properly. But if you enjoy it more power to you, it's legal . God Bless🏹🦃⚰️

I had a similar situation. I had been working on a Tom for about 30 minutes had him get within 70-80 yds then 7 Jakes came in and chased him off. It was crazy to see. Then the Jakes came into the decoys, I picked up the biggest and took him. He had an almost 6-inch beard and had some size to him. In hindsight, I should've let him go but being caught in the moment and walking the number of miles I did to get to this set up I didn't want it to go for not. Also, it was the first turkey I called in solo.

Sometimes it happens that fast! When you were talking about going across the lake after those two that were thundering, reminded me of a time I had just started turkey hunting. I knew there were turkeys on the public land I deer hunted on. So got there really early one morning, made the 3/4 mile hike back to the river bottoms. Just as it was getting daylight, I gave a hoot owl call and had two birds sound off...ACROSS THE RIVER! :( I had always read that Gobblers won't fly across a river. At least that's what most of the experts in the outdoor magazines at the time said. So I hoofed it back to the truck, drove one hour around to the other side, made the hike down the mountain and next to the river near the area I heard the birds at earlier in the morning. Gave a couple big ole crow calls and BOOM, they sounded off. ACROSS THE RIVER WHERE I HAD BEEN EARLIER THAT MORNING! To say I was p.o'd was an understatement! By the time I got back to the pickup, I was still too worked up to go back around and get on them. Figured I'd get on them another day. Made the mistake of telling a hunting buddy about them. Him and his brother go down and kill two gobblers. One had a 7 inch beard and the other had a 9 inch beard!
