Yes, Tom Cruise is in the top tier of actors arguably in the Top 10 of contemporary actors, he is kind of like Pete Rose, doing what he does best in his profession he is one of the best, but it is the "off the field" activities, Rose gambling, Cruise Scientology, that have kept them from obtaining the top award in their respective fields, Rose induction into the BBHOF, Cruise at winning probably a couple of Academy Award Oscars by this time.

I have actually seen this done at work and it was fucking amazing. This wannabe thug was getting in the face of a chunky coworker not knowing this guy was very well trained in mma when he was younger. Needless to say, he knocked him out cold. You never know who your messing with. At the same job but different job site, a youngster ( 16 - 19 ) was getting in a heated argument and wanted to fight a guy named Felix who was a short guy mid 40's and cool as hell. It never led to them trading blows but later on down the line that old man showed me pictures from when he was a boxer. Not just any boxer, a golden gloves boxer that was about to go pro but retired because of family. That kid would have had his ass handed to him for sure.

A guy I grew up with was a National Judo silver medallist in the 90s. About 5 foot 8, 190pds and built like a fire hydrant. He bounced at a bar and was the calmest guy when working but when someone refused to leave or attacked him it never ended well. I was sitting eating with a group and at the table next to us this big guy (at least 6 foot 5 and 280pds) was being drunk and obnoxious. The bouncer went up to him and asked him politely to leave, the guy stood up, told him to F off and made a lunge towards him and within a blink of an eye the guys legs were straight up in the air and he came crashing down on the table and chairs. It was insane how quickly he threw him. Another time I saw him destroy three guys outside the bar that were trying to kick the door in to get back inside after being kicked out. These highly trained fighters are no joke and drunk idiots stand zero chance even in groups of 3 or more. People have no idea…

I would pay for a series of Reacher spoofs where he experiences what would actually happen to him. (Addendum edit): Over the course of the week I've noticed a small but significant percentage of folks who seriously think I was referring to Reacher's odds against the thugs. Perhaps I wasn't being clear. I was referring to what would happen when our Noble Constables arrived to utterly ruin every aspect of his life and not magically cut him loose book after book. I saw both in theatres & absolutely hated them. A few years later, I wound up watching this 1st film again several times for some reason or another, & finally seeing all the nuances in the film & how finely tuned a work of Americana this film actually is...plus, the amazing performance by Werner Herzog...I had to completely flip my former opinion. This is actually a fantastic film; it never gets old. Although, the 2nd film I did not enjoy & am unlikely to change my mind. I think Jack Reacher 2 should have been a prequel giving Werner Herzog the ability to further develop his "Zek" character from this 1st film. It would have been absolutely brilliant... I just don't get the direction they ultimately chose to go with it...(?)

That is the thing, you can spot SAS, special Forces guys a mile away - although great at what they do, they are no good as spies, undercover work - as said they stick out like a saw thumb. Now the 5ft 5-8, kind of guy - muscle, toned but not over the top weight lifting guy - just walks by, with no one paying any attention - that to me is why Tom does so well in this role - and the character should be like Tom - as that kind of guy/spy, is never sussed out until it is too late - he is unassuming, uninteresting, flies under the radar every time - people instantly over look him(no pun there, me and Tom are the same height, so I can't say shit) - you know, things that a spy need to be able to do - not stand out in a crowd, yet with a level of training and ability that would put pretty much special forces world wide to shame. Add to that intelligence and fore planning - a very dangerous adversary. This is what makes this movie brilliant and Tom as Reacher a dam good choice.

I’ve watched this scene around 20 times in the last few weeks. I always liked him but never realized what a great actor he is

Jack Reacher is the man Tom Cruise *wishes* he could be.

Yeah the idea of 51-year old Tom Cruise as this tough intimidating guy who can take on squads of men by himself wasn't very convincing.

@@chadcognac5626 It's not just age. Cruise isn't very physically imposing. They've still been able to make him a serviceable action star when he was younger, but by the 2010s that time had passed, at least when it came to hand-to-hand fighting.

It is criminal that they gave the little man the part of Reacher. His movies of Reacher are fantasy if you read the books first.

Reacher is supposed to be 6'5" and 250 lbs. Tom is a great actor and movie star. But he's no Reacher. Sorry Tom. Even the lifts don't work.

Unbelievable they have such a panty-waste playing Jack reacher. This qualifies as comedy.

In a way it makes more sense. Would even 4 or 5 guys want to take on a 6' 5" muscle bound guy? Likely not.
