The thing that pisses me off most about this movie is the idea that monsters hate humans. In the original, Monster High (the school) was a place of inclusivity for everyone, human or monster. They even had a Jeckyll/Hyde character: Jackson Jeckyll, who was a timid little human guy who didn't feel accepted at MH, and Holt Hyde, who was excited and fun about being there, but they had an arc about accepting themselves and learning that, no matter who they are, Monster High welcomes all into its walls. Nearly every student there was also taught that wheather you're monster or normie (the original MH term for humans), you will be accepted, "Freaky flaws and all" I'm nearly 18 now, but I grew up watching MH. It was the only reason I ever learned to accept myself for who I am, and to never discriminate against others for what they look like or what they can/can't do. This series meant so much to me, taught me so many lessons that are still a deep part of my personality today. These bastards ruined it.

Because typically child stars can only work a certain amount of time each day due to child labor laws. So the production would take a lot longer to shoot and more of a budget because more then half the time would be spent on makeup alone. So that's typically why the makeup is over looked.

My complaint about the movie is the fact that the show was already inclusive from the getgo. I mean, there were all sorts of characters! There were tons of different races. There was a Romanian, a Russian, an Aussie, an Egyptian, a Mexican (the skull girl), and an Asian too! Not to mention they had all sorts of monsters! Tons and tons of werewolves, vampires, goblins, deuce, whatever heath is, Jackson Jekyll, Holt Hyde, a centaur, a zombie pony hybrid boy, a ghost mermaid, a spider chick, a dude with huge ears-. the point is there are an incredibly large amount of people on the school. Monster high was about inclusivity, being who you are, embracing your flaws, and accepting everyone around you despite their differences. This movie went against the entire concept of the original series. Everyone sounds the same. There’s nothing inclusive about the movie anymore except Frankie-who isn’t the new “girl “ ((in the original she went by she/her)) who’s trying to fit in (the whole point of the monster high webisodes)- who now goes by they/them. This movie has such good potential if they could at least keep their designs and backstories remotely similar instead of changing the whole concept of monster high and its lore. Anyway you guys can hate on me back for my commentary if you want to I just needed to complain about my childhood being destructed. I’m gonna watch Monster high: Ghouls rule :)

Why have Clawdeen be the new girl at school? That was quite literally Frankie's story. Freshly created high school student utterly new to pretty much everything around her. Using Hyde, or rather Holt Hyde-Knock Off, as the villain as well is another baffling choice consider Clawdeen's whole "am I human or am I monster" thing was HIS story. He was the great grandson- not son- of Dr. Jekyll/ Hyde and had a more timid human counterpart named Jackson that actually had a full story arc in one of the animated films because he felt so out of place over at Monster High as neither him nor Holt had control over who was out. In fact, Holt and Frankie actually become a couple! Why absolutely butcher a lore thats perfectly laid out, there's more than enough material that you don't need to utterly rearrange the entire universe.

Monster high was a franchise they could have made more mature and adult and people would have loved it. Their target demographic shouldn’t have been the 8 year olds, it should have been the late teens and early 20s who grew up with it. The original movies already dealt with some pretty heavy topics, so it wouldn’t be anything too drastic, but to see the characters brought to life and made into a more serious (but still got the MH vibe) would be awesome. Even though I didn't watch the movies much as a kid and mainly collected the dolls, I remember Ghoulia being my first MH doll. When I first got her, for some reason I decided that she was blind, mute, and the most popular girl in school because disabled people can be cool too. I was estatic when my cousin told me about how, in the show, she's really smart and liked by her peers, but is also disabled. Okay, the “No humans or half-humans” rule makes no sense. First of all, like you said, Frankie is made of human body parts. Second of all, Cleo is a mummy-a human who died and was buried a specific way. Yes, she’s undead now, but if you gave her a DNA test, it would read as human. Draculaura is a vampire-again, she was once human, and many vampires can pass as human rather convincingly-the original Dracula, for example. Clawdeen may be risking discrimination for only being half werewolf, but even a full-blooded werewolf would naturally be human, only transforming into a wolf on the full moon. What makes Frankie, Cleo, and Draculaura-all of whom were once human, or many humans in Frankie’s case-okay, but Clawdeen, who actually does have monstrous DNA, a target? I want to like this movie, but the rules of the setting don’t make sense.

Lets try to write a better plot, here we go: Most monsters are part human in someways, but what makes werewolves special is that they can be human and then transition into monsters and vice versa, despite that they faced descrimination from both humans and monsters, and since most of them see the abilities as a curse they decided to get rid of it either by witch craft, special items and jewelry, shedding their monstrous form, which made them quite a rarity among monsters. By the time clawdeen matured and started to gain monster appearance from her werewolf side, she realized she doesnt fit into human world, where her adventure into the monster high would begin, who learned from her father who also knew about it from her mother, despite neither have ever attended it. After been accepted into said school, she noticed that many student reject her for being a werewolf, which in their Eyes is traitorous species since they rejected their true selves to blend with humans, and them knowing that she is only half monster makes it worse for her, which make her mission to turn people into her side and befriend them, it doesnt help that things are getting weird inside the school which made other student suspicious of her. During her stay there, she learned that there was a werewolf student in the past, 100 years ago to be exact, which made clawdeen curios about how he fit in the school, after digging around, she learned that they were developing a cure for lycanthropy, which made her disappointed, but after finding the lab and discovering a letter that says that he/she couldnt do it and instead they are to proud to reject the monster form. And the rest is still the same for the movie.

ALSO in the show one of the students was human most of the time, Jack Jeckyll only turned into Holt Hyde when he heard music I think? I remember him being bullied or like an outcast, but idk if it was because he was human or because he was a nerd. Also characters like Ghoulia used to be human too since she's a Zombie 🤷 Besides that I really don't understand why they made Clawdeen the protagonist, I used to love her, but it's a weird choice...Frankie is literally made to be the protagonist, it makes much more sense since shes only been alive a few days for them to be excited about everything. They were THE power couple at MH and made sure to make a plot point out of it. The physical pain I was in while watching this is immeasurable. As a lover of the original series, seeing it get rebooted was bad enough. When I found out Nickelodeon was making a live-action version, my hopes weren't high but this was just so disappointing. I have several notes: 1. Why is Clawdeen the main character? It was usually Frankie that the series focused on, or it was Frankie AND all her friends equally. This isn't a big point with me, but it's definitely the first thing I noticed. 2. They switched around lots of the personalities of the characters. Frankie is this clumsy and naive, but kind-hearted girl just trying to figure life out since she's only 16 days old. Clawdeen is sassy and stubborn and will go above and beyond for her friends. Draculaura is excitable and bubbly and a total hopeless romantic. Cleo is snobby and self-indulgent, but she does care for her friends, and especially her boyfriend. In this movie, it feels like they just made everyone so cookie-cutter. No one feels unique. 3. Speaking of Cleo's boyfriend, IT'S DUECE. No ifs, ands, or buts. Frankie did have a thing for him in the first movie, but then she let it go once she realized his relationship with Cleo. They had their problems, of course, they even broke up a couple times throughout the show and movies, but they always got back together because they belonged together. They balanced each other out. And Duece was the ONE person that Cleo loved no matter what. He was the consistent factor in her life. So the fact that Nickelodeon broke them up and made Duece a love interest for Clawdeen really rubbed me the wrong way. CLAWDEEN of all people. 4. And also...WHERE ARE DUECE'S SUNGLASSES? Having him just wear glasses isn't enough to stop him from turning people to stone. You can still see his eyes through glass. That is such a big part of his character. He's the son of Medusa, so he wears sunglasses so he can look at people without turning them to stone. 5. Lagoona was never Cleo's best friend like it was depicted in this movie. Lagoona was never her sidekick. Cleo's sidekick was always Ghoulia, who I think is who Clawdeen talks to when she's looking for her dorm room. Only...well, Ghoulia's a zombie. She can't actually SPEAK. At least, not coherently. She usually just hobbles about, moaning. Others can understand her, of course, but still. I guess I get why they made Ghoulia able to talk in the movie but how she did was not what I was expecting. What was that cackle?! And if they wanted to include Lagoona, why didn't they include her boyfriend Gil? And on that note, if they included Draculaura, why didn't they include her boyfriend Clawd? Both guys are pretty important characters. 6. If they wanted to do a whole plot about humans being bad and making the school act weird because there's not a true monster heart, and this whole thing with Jekyll and Hyde...then WHY ISN'T JACKSON/HOLT HERE? Jackson and Holt were two of my favorite characters because of their dynamic with each other and their personalities (not to mention they were both potential love interests for Frankie). Plus there was a whole thing about Jackson being bullied because he was human and not realizing that he was actually part monster in the form of Holt, and vice versa. The school eventually learned to accept them both because even though they were half human, half monster, they were still good people. I could go on for ages about this so I'll stop here. But yeah, these were just some thoughts I had. I'm disappointed with this movie. It just felt like the creators didn't pay much attention to the actual characters and lore. But that's just me.

One of the worst things about this reboot is they literally just rotated the main three’s personalities around. Clawdeen became the nerdy new girl, which was Frankie. Frankie became the more naive innocent one which was Draculaura, and then Draculaura is just super super sassy and the more chic one which was Clawdeen. Then the fact that when trying to change clawdeen from being the stereotypical sassy black girl they instead made her made her biracial quite literally LESS black/lighter (Zendaya-like) and less threatening/fierce, like “one of the good black people” it’s insanity.

Personally I don't have the biggest issue with the personality switch. I think that all three of the people who played the leads did a good job. Frankie maintained that kind of new kid/fish out of water vibe. I agree with you that one of the main issues was that instead of making her sassy and no nonsense like she usually is, they made her lighter skinned and kind of timid. I'm not saying that all black girls have to be portrayed the same way on tv, but taking a character who was originally coded as black and is shown to be a nice person in addition to being sassy and no nonsense, then changing her to be more timid and soft and lighter skinned is frustrating.

As a straight female who was into Monster High for a minute, but never had any of the dolls and followed the lore pretty closely, I never liked the idea of this reboot. As (originally) the daughter of Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein, Frankie was originally female and made with female parts. Cleo and Deuce breaking up was a stupid decision since they were once the Jade and Beck of Monster High, but without the toxicity. Deuce wore sunglasses, Lagoona was Australian, and there was a Jekyll and Hyde character already who was a student who had full control over his powers. He dated female Frankie and everything. The whole witchcraft thing doesn't make sense because there was already a character who was a witch and Draculaura had her own problems. There are so many things wrong that others have pointed out already and I don't like it.

This reboot kinda hurts me. I grew up on Monster High. Some people make fun of me and get all like, "Why do you care so much about a kids show?" Because it has a lot of meaning for me. I used to watch Monster High CDs and occasionally buy them when my sister and I were going to my father's house (my parents were separated at the time). Those are really important memories for me. I remember entering at a Lojas Americanas (a brazillian store) in a gas station that is now closed and getting hyped to watch the a new movie. It means a lot to me and it hurts to see how they just fucked what Monster High standed for. It doesn't matter if they are weird, if they are human, if they come from different places. Every life matters. At least in the original Monster High.

EXACTLY like i know its a bit childish of me to go on a whole rant about how soul-crushing this movie was, but Monster High means something to me. I bought all the dolls, remembered the names and plots, had a Monster High DS game, and I can still sing the entire theme song by memory. And to see people undermine the importance of this franchise by calling it "a movie only made to sell dolls" just really sucks. MH had important lessons that I still remember and hold dearly to this day. In every movie, something would be taught to the viewers. And that's how MH eventually became such a classic. It wasn't just a movie made to sell dolls or make kids happy. In the Great Scarrier Reef, Lagoona had to conquer her stage fright and relive traumatizing past memories. In Freaky Fusion, Frankie sacrificed herself for her friends and caused her grandfather to realize his mistakes, showing that family is not who you're born with but who you would sacrifice yourself for. In short, no matter what character the story focused on, there was always something to take from the movies. And with the various reboots, including the weird animated ones that no one talks about, it feels like MH's main factors of its success is shit on by whoever writes them.

It was funny because at some point I started rooting for Hyde Jr throughout the movie because the way they handled his dad was so messed up. That and they had already butchered my beloved characters enough. But the fact that they proudly cheered that they all abandoned and turned their back on Hyde despite him trying to fit in as best as he could and then found out he was working on a way to become a full monster and that still wasn't enough for him, and THEN he's exiled to the human world where human proceed to kill him?! Yeah, I'd want revenge for my father too but then they had Hyde Jr be taken out in such a anti climate way that I burst out laughing. The one interesting thing in the whole movie and they ruined it.

My favourite MH moment in every short or film, is when Cleo has been scolded for being controlling and leaves Duce alone for 20 minutes and it becomes clear that he has no idea how to decide on his own lunch and prefers things when Cleo does his thinking for him. I've met couples exactly like that in real life and this film absolutely guts that moment. Somehow making a show about cartoon monster school, less realistic.

2:50 theres actually interesting lore to draculauras name theres a collectors edition of the doll with a diary and we learn that she's not a natural born vampire, but the adopted daughter of dracula. He saved her mother while she was pregnant and so her mother named her draculaura in his honor. Her mother later died of the plague, and he saved her from the same fate by turning her into a vampire, and he became her gaurdian.

Honestly, this movie painted over many of the characters that I grew to love from the original movie series. The very first movie, Frankie goes to school 16 days after being created. She's not created by the parts of the greatest people in history, just created. Her first struggle is fitting in at the school, finding friends, and since she hasn't been alive for very long, she's figuring out how socializing works. Movies after that show how werewolves and vampires don't get along, sexism in sports, toxic ex-boyfriends, etc. Most if not all the plots are well written where the characters actually learn something at the end and things change from the beginning of the movie to the end of it. The only thing they changed that seems slightly understandable in the long run is Draculaura using witchcraft because it's explained in the original franchise that she has yet to receive her vampire powers (floating, transforming into a bat, etc.). She just never went that far to use witchcraft to have any sort of power beyond what she was unable to conjure up herself. Also, I have to vent that they took away a bunch of important characters and changed things around with others. Deuce (son of Medusa) was never a love interest for Clawdeen. The only other person who ever had any eyes for him was Frankie and it was for one movie before she learned that he was Cleo's boyfriend. They also seem to not have Clawdeen's older brother in this story, which is a shame because he's the long standing love interest for Draculaura. Also, Cleo's best friend was never Lagoona the sea monster but a zombie named Ghoulia Yelps. They also completely got rid of the descendant of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Jackson/Holt) which, considering the message of this movie, is understandable but still disappointing because I actually thought he was an interesting character. I know none of this is important in the grand scheme of things but how they completely changed the movie and characters around is just disappointing to a lifelong fan of the franchise.

@@dantestars7146 Ikr? This is what happens when the old writers leave and let the new ones do whatever they want. Granted though, this isn't the first time they've changed the narrative of Monster High. When I was in middle school, I found there was a Monster High book series and was surprised to find out that in this series, the whole world was different. It had the same characters but it painted a light of if our Monster High crew were monsters hiding among humans in a human school. (Think the premise of Halloweentown 3 but with no bet on if they're able to fit in at a human school.) The characters were slightly different as well. Frankie's father didn't want her going to school but she does (I think she does this dressed as a boy but it's been way too long since I've read the series.) and actually ends up briefly dating Holt, the Hyde side of Jackson. Also, instead of Jackson turning into Holt with loud noise, he's, instead, triggered by hot rooms/spaces. Also, Holt doesn't know that he's one of two people living in the same body which, again, is interesting in its own right. However, all this said, all these things that are different to the story actually make it very interesting and is still really good storytelling. Sure, I'm more used to the movie franchise and how they did things, but it's still good writing and storytelling. Some things do stay the same though. Cleo's dating Deuce, Frankie's just made of normal dead people, Draculaura's not doing witchcraft, Clawd I think actually is part of the story, etc. This movie, on the other hand, is not good storytelling and (pun not intended) has torn apart the characters we grew up with and hastily tried to put them back together to make frankenstein versions of them and their character.

Wasn't the first time I brought myself into a series by starting with a book in the middle of the plot though, lol. It was incredibly interesting. I especially liked the two human kids that were helping them. I thought their part in the plot was very interesting and the friendships and connections they made with the gang were so well written.

Look, I haven’t seen the movie and I don’t have time to watch the vid rn but just WHY Like the original was so amazing. We had great characters, diversity, compelling stories, awesome outfits and they just destroyed all of it. Like we went from having a movie literally about a minority being unfairly discriminated against by the police, to a soulless cut and paste high school movie. The clothes are literally just what teens are wearing now but with brighter colours, there’s nothing of the individuality and personality the originals had. There was tons of diversity in the originals if you were looking. From implied Asian, Mexican, French, black, brown etc. characters, to showing things like ADHD and autism. There was no reason to make Frankie NB when they could have come up with a totally new character who actually had it be part of their story. Also apparently they made Draculaura the stereotypical mean girl? When she was the sweetest girl ever? What? **just want to say (and nobody’s said anything but I just want to clarify), I would love a NB character to be created into the franchise, not that because it’s not “necessary” it shouldn’t happen. I just think they could have actually had a story behind a character and their gender/sexuality, rather than just swapping pronouns. It made it feel like it was just for the diversity points, you know?

The worst part is the original web series actually had some good storylines and character growth and, like, legit problems (Frankie learning who she is as a person, Cleo dealing with family issues, Draculaura struggling with magic, etc). Expanding on any of those storylines would have made for a really great live action movie and seeing those references would have gotten a bigger draw from older viewers wanting the nostalgia. But, no. They have to write a whole new storyline that's anything but good😑
