Fiend Factory was a column in White Dwarf from 1978-1986 that showed off various monsters for Dungeons and Dragons. We thought it was pretty cool so we made a video about it.

We need more of you guys talking old White Dwarf. It was an...interesting period. Not always very good, but definitely...interesting. Especially when you read the letters section discussing those evil "normal people" ruining RPGs, where have we heard that bullshit before?

My personal favourite is a letter from an even older publication bemoaning how wargaming is being ruined by fantasy wargaming and how are people ever going to take the hobby seriously when they come in and see all these "misbegotten creations" that the fantasy wargaming companies are churning out.

I had no idea that the book I was given as a child had its origins in White Dwarf. A friend of my mom's gave me a copy of the Fiend Folio because she figured that I'd like it, given my fondness for monsters. She was right about that and it was one of my favorite books to peruse. I couldn't actually play the game and didn't know where to get the other books needed to play it. But I loved looking at the art and reading the entries. It was my first experience with ttrpgs. And also my first with GW apparently.

This was a fun trip for me back to my youth. The Squonk was the subject of a Genesis song I used to listen to back in the day, and used in some D&D adventures in the 2e era thereafter, but had no idea that WD covered it as an actual monster. Also, use of the C64 Ghosts & Goblins theme hits me in the feels. Keep on keepin' on you two!
