Thank you for sharing your private projects with us. Your channel is different from the others and I must say I really like it. Concerning the pictures they are both great but after looking for a while I just think that the Fuji one has really a 3-D kind of Popp, maybe as a Fuji medium format user one likes to find reasons why the system is necessary but for sure the Nikon picture looks great too. but I think I really like the colours of the Fuji picture alot better because it has more magenta and foremost pink tones in it. That makes it just more vivid which suits very well to your father and the Nikon picture is more brownish kind of which doesn’t give him too much of a fresh look, I hope that wasn’t too long. Cheers and thanks again. ❤

Wait. When you use 55 mm on MF you have to get closer to the subject to have the same framing than on FF 55 mm. So the MF image should be more distorted.
@melihdihya4 ай бұрын
There will be no distortion difference at all, as long as the distance to the camera is the same. So what matters is the equivalent field of view.

The difference is definitely noticable and the 4:3 aspect ratio just looks better for portraits. Have you tried 35mm or 40mm on full frame? Despite the slight distortion it can get nice results IMHO.

Going to try this with the sigma 65mm f2. I think it's right there between the 85 and 50mm. The Nikon 58mm 1.4 would actually work even better I'm guessing (or the Noct :D )

oh man, thats so nice. Thank you for making this video. Emotional and very helpful. Exactly today i bought the 100s ii with the 20-35 lens and was wondering witch lens will be good for portrait. My question is: Is the 35-70 an option?

@bernios34464 ай бұрын
The way facial features are rendered by a camera has nothing to do with sensor format and even less with the brand. It is a pure function of perspective/ distance between camera and face. The 110 F2 compresses much more than the 55mm which - corresponding to roughly 40mm in FF is normally considered too wide for close- ups. It enlarges features like the nose and distorts the faces. J. Marcus made an excellent comparision here on YT between the 110 and the 80mm GF lens. Shows exactly what's going on.
@412foto4 ай бұрын
pretty much convinced myself to switch from fujifilm to Nikon but then I see this video and it makes me pause again....the GFX system is very tempting. Maybe biggest factor though might be the cost of the lenses

I think it is the negative size. The GFX sensor isn't actually that big. A close range portrait with a 6x7 will look quite a bit different.
@drchtct4 ай бұрын
Shouldn't a fullframe camera deliver the exact same distortion as long as focal lengths are equivalent? The 55mm f1.7 is a 44mm f1.3 equivalent, or in other words, it's a 55mm f1.7 in FF but with a bit more negative space around the edges, creating a slightly wider angle look. Please correct me if I'm wrong, love the image anyway, you made your dad ready for Times magazine cover lol

Due to different aspect ratio pictures will be different and once you would try to crop it into 4:3 you will have to step back and change distance and therefore perspective. I left comment here how to calculate crop factor with account of further crop.
@toeb47123 ай бұрын
If you don’t move, yes. But if you compensate to get the same field of view, then the distortion will be different. Longer focal length=you have to take a step back to get the same vield of view=less distortion These lenses are quite hard to compare since you have to consider the difference in sensor size and the different image ratios as well. So just try what works best. The results you can get with either of those systems are what counts.
@isoawe18884 ай бұрын
Thanks Omar. Still haven’t gotten 55 yet, so I can’t compare… but isn’t closer to 35 on FF rather than a 50? Thanks

Hey Omar, GFX is great, here is math how to get GFX look with FF: TLDR: to replicate GFX 55/1.7 you need 40/1.2 on FF and crop into 4:3. Shot should be made from same spot. Let's start from equivalence - most of us just grabs equivalent lens and ends up with picture is not the same. And at this point starts a myth about some special medium format look or magical compression on medium format. But there is no magick: equivalence calculated via diagonal. On medium format we've got 4:3 aspect ratio where on FF 3:2 and typically to match medium format we had to crop FF picture into 4:3 and therefore to fit same angle you will have to step back. In result you will change distance from subject and perspective and less bokeh. So how to calculate real equivalent to make same shot with account of further crop on FF to match aspect ratio? Just use proportion: GFX sensor size 44*33 FF sensor size 36*24 We need to crop FF into 4:3 so we interested in vertical equivalence, let's calculate vertical crop factor - it's 24/33 ~= 0.727 Now multiply any fuji GFX lens with it: 55/1.7 * 0.727 ~= 40/1.2 lens for FF. That's should work, but I don't yet had a chance to try it!
@icepop4who4 ай бұрын
You forget to mention GFX outputs 16-bit RAW, greater dynamic range, lower base ISO, and Fuji color science. There is a natural gradation to the light and colors that is just a step above what FF can achieve. There is no equivalence here.
@artur.charaev4 ай бұрын
@@icepop4who I think you missed context. All the GFX benefits are clear but pure overkill for the most people, nobody will really notice 14/16 bit or 80/100 iso difference. And yes, I’ve got GFX 100S, but for completely different reasons, i don’t care of pixel peeping, but I care of overall look: with ef glass I can stay wide with very narrow depth of field. This is something that really noticeable and that can’t be replicated with FF.
@icepop4who4 ай бұрын
@@artur.charaev the way you phrased “to get that GFX look” as if the only thing that mattered is depth of field. I’m trying to dispel the myth that DoF is the only thing that made the GFX look. My mistake if you were just comparing DoF, but don’t call it the “GFX look”

Fuji has a long history of making some of best cameras ever, both film and digital. The basic difference between Fuji, Nikon, Canon, and a few others is that the camera portion of their business is a bit smaller. Moreover, Fuji has created some of the best cameras, including medium format cameras, both film and Digital, and they accomplish it at a rather LOW price - Nikon has actually been teetering on bankruptcy for the last several years. Canon? Better color than Nikon. Fuji? Better color than Canon. Fuji JPG quality? By FAR the BEST ever JPG quality. By the way ... Fuji now outsells ALL medium format digital cameras COMBINED - What do you get ... ? You get the BEST of the BEST overall, and for a ridiculously good price when compared to the competition.
