I come from the time before, the time before. We never got pizza for lunch. Fish sandwiches or something that vaguely resembled hamburger on Friday only. Most of the time our meals involved some sort of meat in red sauce, green beans, some version of potatoes and those little 2² inch dinner rolls. At the time I didn't know they were conditioning me for a 20 year military career.

I found out that the 80's "mystery meat" chuck wagon steak in school that didn't taste like beef, chicken, or pork was actually horse meat. Apparently most of the 80's school lunches in my area of the U.S. were bought cheap from Canada and that is what we got.

In the high school I went to in the 70’s, they had these hamburgers that were steamed with an orange mystery sauce, the top bun looked like a picture of a human brain. They looked like they’d gag a maggot, but in actuality, they weren’t that bad.

I wish I could go back to my elementary school and get the Italian sandwiches they used to serve us back in the 80's. I don't know what kind of sliced meat was on it, but it was my favorite school lunch of all time and I've never been able to recreate it. It was the only times I ever remember seeing a cafeteria full of kids voluntarily eating onions, green peppers, and tomatoes and not complaining about it. I still prefer the taste of milk from a carton instead of a plastic jug, too.

When it was hamburger day I would leave my tray in the middle of the table for my friends who could choke them down. I remember times when they would give warning what culinary torture they were doing that day and I would sneak out through the shop class building and walk to Wendy's, Arby's, or LJS all right across the street from the back of the school. I wasn't the only one because there were usually a few of us that would be there. The cool thing was the principal would yell at the staff to lock the doors but my shop teacher would unlock it just before first lunch and lock it back up when classes were back in session. Even he admitted he couldn't choke down the garbage they served and he was in the Marines

I was so blessed. Our school district made our food from scratch and baked fresh bread and rolls every day. We had fresh vegetables and salads and got to try new foods on things that caught our food services director’s attention. (We had shark in elementary school when he caught one on a trip and had it shipped home). As well as venison in deer season. They still have majority freshly prepared meals and still bake their own breads.

When I started going to school I went to a small country school that had grandmas volunteer as lunch ladies. That food was better than the slop I got at home because my mother couldn't cook to save her life. We then moved to the farm causing me to now go to a city school. The food was horrible even by my standards. I would usually push my tray into the middle of the table for my friends to fight over the garbage. Except on home style days when they let the old lunch ladies make a meal. On that day I had multiple trays in front of me because my friends hated those home style meals. Chicken and biscuits, spaghetti and garlic bread, beef stew on mashed potatoes, or my personal favorite chili. I carried beef jerky, granola bars, and hot sauce in my backpack every day

I remember these hamburgers that were heated and served in these foil paper bags. It was just a thin patty of some kind, with a bun smashed flat from being in the bag. It was served with these tater tot like squares. You got two of them, served in a wax paper bag. The remarkable thing about these hash brown squares was how greasy they were. One could in fact throw them at the ceiling and expect them to stick.

Bearing in mind Regan was president. Yep, I remember chalupas with a few nuggets of ground beef covered by a paper-thin film of cheddar cheese, next to four tater-tots. On weeks where my self employed dad couldn't find work, instead of school lunch, I brought two pieces of bread pasted together with mustard from our empty refrigerator. My dad loved Regan all the same solely on the merits of Regan's cheery personality.

I don't understand kids these days and their unending need to drown their food in some sort of sauce. I remember a time when you could order a burger from McD's, open the wrapper and eat it with one hand while driving down the road and it was tasty. Just enough ketchup and mustard to make the sandwich chewable. I order some burgers the other day only to get them home and find the patties holding their breath. The younglings in the back had put so much ketchup and mustard on that I needed a shower after eating that sandwich soup.

Kids today wouldn’t have survived when we were kids. They’d have been too traumatized to leave the house with the first knee scrape from falling off their bike! The fall would come from a meltdown because they were forced to play outside…there’s bugs and sunlight out there 🙄😂

This kid needs to experience the boiled hamburgers that may or may not have been real meat or the "cooked to death" spaghetti mush.

Anyone know where I can acquire the old school pizza rectangles they served back then? I'm pretty sure if I started a food truck selling only that pizza, and tiny chocolate milks, I'd be able to retire in about 2 weeks....

She is complaining about the chicken sandwich when she has a chocolate milk and what looks like ice cream. Dude I wish I had that when I was in school.
