I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: Maids of Honor are slacking on the job nowadays. If anyone shows up in anything REMOTELY resembling a wedding dress, they get doused: ink, shoe polish, hair dye, wine. The bridesmaids should have taken that SIL and dragged her behind the garage and fixed the situation. C’mon bridal parties, step up your game! 😇

I have a close friend with a future MIL who would show up in a wedding dress just to be the centre of attention and gain narcissistic supply. I already plan to recruit our other friends in shaming MIL. The plan: Me [spotting MIL in white dress]: hey friend 1! [pointing to MIL] I think you won the pool! Didn't you have MIL showing up in an inappropriate dress? Friend 1 [option 1]: Yes, I had that guess! I'll buy you a beer with some of the money later. Friend 1 [option 2]: No, I think friend 3 had that guess. [pointing to MIL] Hey friend 3 I think you won the pool! Didn't you have MIL foolishly showing up in a wedding dress? Option 2 is preferred, with the message being passed among several others before someone finally claiming the (entirely fictional) money/prize. (my friend would enjoy the idea of someone spilling ink, etc. on the dress but would hate it if we did it in practice. But my friend would also enjoy the calling it out, and yes, I'd check with her and future husband before enacting the plan).

We had a family member OFFER to photograph our wedding for us as her gift as she knew we were saving up to adopt our oldest child (long story. We already had custody but wanted it to be official). We gratefully agreed and still look at those pictures with gratitude. We could've gotten higher quality by paying somebody, but these have significantly more value to us because of the gift aspect. We have since tried to support her small business whenever we can without ever asking for or expecting any kind of discount.

May you continue to receive many such blessings in your life!

You understand the assignment. She offered so it was her gift to you. And you have been paying her back by supporting her passion. The article was talking about getting freebies. Anyone specifically cutting corners for free or cheap photography better be mindful that they still treat their photographers with respect and at least feed them. Also if you are getting a friend or family member, you better understand that they may want to enjoy your wedding rather than be busy taking photos every few minutes, or we get a repeat of the photographer deleting story from reddit.

That is GREAT! What a cool move from BOTH sides! Honestly, if someone OFFERS to do it, then as long as the ppl are respectful & appreciative there's NOTHING wrong w\that! It's the ungrateful jerks that sour ppl on doing for others! & I KNOW too that sometimes a friend\family can make an offer about doing something for free for a loved 1 early on. Like you know, when you get married whenever, I'll do the catering for free & we can use my property. & They make that offer you know when there's no upcoming plans for a wedding. Then later when it happens whether it's a year or 5 years, you're thinking & you go BACK to that person & ask if they will, I don't think there's anything wrong with that either or that you're disrespecting them or taking advantage by wanting their work for free bc THEY OFFERED 1st. But in the same vein, you can't be mad if their circumstances or situation has changed & they CAN'T do it for free either. Ppl just need to start respecting ppl & being kind! & Entitled ppl are ALWAYS well that's what I'm saying! Why can't they be kind & just do this FOR FREE! Umm no. It's not kind to DEMAND good or services for free! Ppl kill me!

I was the maid of honor at my sister’s wedding. Instead of having specific dresses we had to buy to be in the line, she asked us all to find a black formal dress that we loved. It didn’t matter the style, it just had to be the color black. While I was looking for a black dress, I came across this gorgeous floral dress that was half ivory and half black. My mom absolutely loved the dress too and asked my sister if it was okay if I had a dress that was half ivory. My sister didn’t like the idea, so guess what I did? I kept looking and found a nice dress that was all black. I don’t understand people that purposely show up in clothes that don’t follow the dress code. It’s really not that hard.

My mom wore a white dress but I didn't let that get to me. I new going into this wedding planning that my mom was going to be a pain to deal with. I was right, and she started drama right away, making it all about her. At one point, we had ordered the flowers for the wedding and my parents and in laws both decided to pay for the wedding equally between them. My mom was supposed to pay for the flowers, we got them order and they were ready to pick up, them my mom started throwing a fit. To this day after 23years I still dont know why. She told us that she was not going to pay. Me being 18 at the time was like ok, this was expected so we will not have flowers. But my mother in law told me in private that she will pay if my mom will not. My mom heard about that and she didnt like that so she did end up paying. I kept my cool because this was all to be expected. Living with my mom u just know nothing is done with out drama or trying to make about her. Seriously my mom actually cut herself a piece of the wedding cake at my cousins wedding before they had cut it them selves. She wanted cake so she just went over there and cut herself a piece.😳 Who dose that? There were time I would say, you see that crazy women's creating drama over there, ya I don't know her. I know I might sound heartless, it's more of a mellow acceptance. It is what it is. 🙄 I have a great relationship with my mother in law. She has treated me better then my own mom ever did.

Aw I'm so sorry. I know if I ever got married my mother would cause drama. She's a narcissist and it's always all about her. She starts fights and ruins every single special day (Christmas and anyone's birthday that's not hers, even my child's, every single year). It sounds like your mom may be one too. That's great that you're close with your MIL at least. Sometimes chosen family feels more like family. Sometimes with my mom it helps to fawn over her a bit, give her the attention she wants. For example, at my baby shower we did low cost, so both sides of the family made the food. My mom yelled at me, was giving me attitude, and making me feel bad when it's the only type of special day I've ever had (only had a few birthday parties as a child, no graduation parties, no parties for my 16th, 18th, 21st, etc., nor engagement party). I didn't need any special treatment, I just didn't want any fighting or drama. She made one of the dishes and people loved it, so when I walked around greeting everyone and people said they loved the food, I made sure to loudly exclaim how my mother made it and she makes the best! People complemented her on how good it was, and she was beaming! She stopped being nasty to me that day. So, for any future events mom is at, give her a role that makes her feel important, but that she couldn't ruin, and k*ll her with kindness.

Welp... My first dance at my wedding reception was with my niece, so I'm a pretty terrible guy. My wife was being helped by her sister and mom straighten her dress after someone accidentally stepped on it and my newly minted four-year-old niece wanted to dance with me (by standing on my feet) while we were waiting for my lovely bride. The photos are adorable and my wife's and my favorite. We didn't have any idea that we were being photographed so it was pure happenstance. That's a GREAT memory & cool & adorable story! I bet those are the sweetest photos! But that doesn't make you a terrible guy. Lol! Those rules don't apply for your situation. IF the cousin was an adult, then they know better for 1. But also, your bride wasn't standing right there literally waiting for your 1st dance. So, a bit diff. Idk that I'd be bothered either way. I mean it's family not some "friend" & Idk that it mattered to me if my hubby & I were the FIRST to dance at the wedding. Ya know? Regardless, itll be OUR FIRST dance as husband & wife & that was all that mattered. So🤷 assuming that the bride in the video isn't some lady that gets worked up over stupid stuff, I don't blame her for being upset. It was important to HER & that's what matters. But congrats on your wedding & what I'm hoping is now what a 36+yr marriage. Hope that y'all are having an amazing life! & I wish you could comment w\pics on KZbin bc I'd LOVE to see those photos! I have a couple crafty friends and we do very informal trades (I’ll give them some of a new baked good I made, they’ll make me a funky craft to try out a new technique). And when I say trade I mean like we’ll go up to each other one day and be like “sup? I made you a water bottle, let’s go get some food.” If we’re doing it for free, it’s for fun or for gifts. We have actually paid each other for things too! Point is Friend Discount is silly.

I've photographed around 1500 weddings. I've seen a lot of unfortunate things, e.g., churches on fire, drunken bridal parties, drunken officiants, passed out grooms. Every wedding there is somebody inappropriately dressed. When I first started, in the 70's, it was pretty rare, maybe a tipsy groom. Now, it's often a shitshow, and often impossible to get paid. We, as a race, are devolving rapidly.

The flip side of that Holidappy post was that I hired the photographer that my friend used the year before, the guy turned up at the house, did a load of really cool shots, came to the wedding...more cool pics, hung around for a couple of hours AFTER the wedding took tonnes of photos and cost a fortune that I was happy to pay for as the pics were out of this world; even today, long after the marriage ended I STILL have stunning pics of what WAS the happiest days and all my friends and family, some who are no long with us. SO PAY A PROFESSIONAL DAMMIT

As long as you didn't care, that's all that matters! It's only a problem for some ppl. I mean I understand it. I don't feel that other women are wrong or silly! It's natural to want to stand out on your day & not blend in. But some other women just DON'T care about it. & You knew that your Mom wasn't trying to upstage you. & I'm sure you still stood out & looked BEAUTIFUL! I am sorry for your loss! Glad you have great memories w\her tho. & I may not be that concerned with someone else wearing white on my wedding day (idk for sure bc I got married 16yrs ago at the age of 18yrs old! So, not sure if it would have bothered me back then) but bc I. Completely understand & I'm a nice respectful person, I'd NEVER wear white to a Wedding. Well, that's a partial lie. ID NEVER pick out a white dress to wear. However, my BFF got married years ago & I was a bridesmaid & the dress she chose for all of us, was White! A white strapless dress. & I remember ppl complaining about it & my bff worried she'd done something wrong & didn't know about that rule beforehand. I ASSURED her that she was FINE! That the rule is for the brides sake of being the only 1 on white so thru stand out. But it's HER wedding & if she doesn't care & more importantly if that's what SHE wanted for her dream wedding in her mind, then there's exactly what she'd get! & Nobody had ANY trouble of Corrie not standing out! I'm ALL for less stress when it comes to weddings! 💜💕

My mom wore a flowy chiffon 3-piece pantsuit thing in ivory. I wore a light gold dress with ivory lace, so we practically wore the same color. But we picked hers together, randomly finding it at Goodwill for $12. Saved her $100+, cool. My cousin's girlfriend at the time did wear white. It was a ridiculously short mini dress though, so it didn't like too bridal, except maybe for a Vegas/beach wedding. I don't think it hit me she was wearing white until after either. No one showed up in a wedding dress, so I'm good.

Got the cassettes mixed up and taped over half the wedding. So please don't let family members get involved with the photographing or recording such an important event. Try not to stress yourself out or worry & obsess about EVERYTHING being PERFECT! That makes it SO hard! You're so stressed out that you can't actually just be in the moment & ENJOY this wonderful day & make the best memories! Bc it's a day you've been waiting for! So, revel in that! Revel in the joy & the love & bask in that w\your groom! There's NEVER not 1 wedding that doesn't have SOME mishaps or mistakes! But if you let them overwhelm you, you lose that happy, joyful feeling! & You lose that happy, joyful glow! & It'll be so much better when you look back at pics & it shows how happy you are, that you're in LOVE & glowing beautifully for everyone to see for YEARS to come when they see those pics! So, again sorry about the unsolicited (& wordy) advice! Again congrats & wishing you all kinds of happiness!

Hon, if they want their teenage niece who is "really good with Instagram" to be their wedding photographer, let them have her. Once or twice I was so petty, knowing the people, that I went with someone and took photos 'just for myself' and then posted delicious shots so anyone could see them. (Not just weddings - any event they refused to pay me for, I would just photograph the person I was there with, like a stage play or a concert or something...) With a big fat watermark over it, of course. Which, almost always, people then tried to crop out and steal the stuff they didn't think was worth paying for. Eh, small pleasures in a photographer's life.

For my brother in law's wedding I wore a white petticoat under my knee-lenght, dark blue dress. You can barely see it when I'm wearing it. When the groom and his aunt came into the house we were getting ready, and saw it in my suitcase, they were horrified thinking it was a full on white dress lol. That was funny

Ok the blanket thing is kinda cute idea for like a winter themed wedding as long as seating is actually offered to guests. Like if you gave out blankets as a gift to the guests I think would be kinda cute :) I like the "to have and to hold in case you get cold"

I find the drama over who is invited/ who is left out to be so funny. I recently went to my good friend’s wedding and my partner of 4 years wasn’t invited because we aren’t married and they wanted to keep numbers down. My partner is a groomsmen in an upcoming wedding and I wasn’t even a thought on the invite list because I do not know the bride and groom very well. I don’t see any issue with not inviting someone’s partner to an event, unless you’re all equally friends because that would be pretty rude 😂

It has literally never crossed my mind to were anything close to white to someone else’s wedding, i’m 31 and i’ve known this since i was a child. For someone to claim ignorance is beyond me! It’s not okay ever and anyone who says it was an accident or that they didn’t know, they were lying and wearing that dress on purpose and no one could change my mind ever!

Lynds, I agree with you on that. They wanted drama, and to be talked about whether good way, bad way doesn't matter. One wedding i was a part of, the bride had the bridesmaids in fuscha...I think I spelled that color right, and she wasn't a bridezilla, And the wedding was in my back yard on that day it looked like a botanical garden way back when with a trellis to match. And the grub, was on the grill...it was a very nice day in the summer for June,

I mean, I'd never wear white (except the time my bff got married & I was a bridesmaid & SHE picked out a white dress for us.} Bc I know that it's an etiquette thing & that it bothers ppl. BUT, I don't personally think it's that big of a deal for me or for some ppl. So, I choose not to. But there's MANY MANY ppl who have NEVER heard this rule. & So, they might not know any diff or be from another culture. So, I'm not gonna be hateful & rude if someone TRIES to or asks. BUT if the bride or groom Express to them that they do NOT want them to wear white & explain this wedding etiquette, & they STILL try to anyways, then I'm gonna be rude & call them out & do what needs to be done. But, my point was that some ppl just don't care. & My friend I mentioned above was made to feel bad & like the wedding she had in mind & her preferences were wrong & ugly. So, I explained to her what the rule was & WHY it was a rule, that it's supposed to be the brides day & it's symbolic etc but that this way the bride is who stands out & is noticed & all that. But it was HER wedding & we were HER bridesmaids & if that was what SHE wanted & thought looked good, & she wasn't worried about standing out or someone "outshining"her, then there was NO NEED to worry or be stressed about breaking a "rule". Lol

So the cake is gorgeous, I'll agree. My problem is this whole idea that men don't really want to get married, that they're forced. This heteronormative idea that you have to hate your partner or something. So it's the toxic idea behind him being dragged to getting married against his will that isn't it for me. If it was a birthday cake for an avid hunter or something though, take away the bride and groom, it would be an amazing cake. Bet it tastes delicious though
