Honestly the formula of taking a potentially goofy thing and updating it with complete sincerity counts for a lot. Like BruceTimm/Batmite says it's certainly a very different interpretation of Batman, but at some point you just never consider it's NOT Batman.
@JosephCantu-qq1yr Жыл бұрын
This, will you ever be preaching to the choir or right over the heads of anti-Orwellian acolyyes, but here goes ... Born in 72 I remember as a young man being naive enough to have hope and one of the things I hoped for was the continuation and expansion of free speech, and lack of intrusion into our personal lives The works and philosophies of people like George Orwell Hunter s Thompson HL Mencken Gore Vidal, Anthony Burgess, and even writers as old as Walt Whitman are now viewed as passe, unconnected to the personal lives we now live today reveals the true intellectual purgatory we reside within If you're unfamiliar with the death spiral of an ant colony look it up and ask yourself how closely it resembles your everyday life It's why anti-heroes Armageddon fetishes and escapist works like Fight Club The walking Dead, Joker and v for vendetta to name a few have garnered so much cult adootation these days It's why so many people have death fetishes.... eschatology=the theology, oft fetishized, regarding death apocalypse and judgment. That says a whole lot about the current zeitgeist and how we feel about ourselves and others. And yet here we poked around wondering about innuendos the and dirty word's and words get videos demonetized We need to stop being sensitive if someone wants to use offensive words against minority groups of any kind I gladly encourage it. Let them yell it from the digital rooftops. this way we know who they are and where they are and what they think instead of allowing it to Fester inside of them until it comes out in a flurry of murder because it's been so long bottled up in the dark recess of their grey matter. And the minor censorship here in this cartoon is a small example of how the slippery slope keeps Us banning and discouraging word after word and thought afterthought , yet maybe that's the point But maybe I'm wrong and the corporate powers that be all right maybe if we keep people from speaking their minds their minds will suddenly become the clean light well-ordered machines that we want them to be. we'll find out one day . Hell, in actuality, we're finding out day by day in real time

It was amazing for silver age fans. Especially coming off of the 90s and early 2000s where comics at times felt ridiculously dark and serious. At the time editors for some reason decided comics weren't supposed to be fun and their now "adult" audience wanted every comic to copy DCAU animated Batman's darkness and get the grimdark status.

I worked on the show this was my understanding of what happened: CN kept on preempting the show in the U.S. so the original version never aired here, however, CN Australia didn’t get that memo somehow and it aired when it was originally scheduled. Places like i09 and other outlets wrote about the musical number (lyrics by James Tucker and Michael Jelenic) and it went viral. CN America got a nervous about it and made us scramble to change finished animation before it was to be aired in the U.S. No one high up was paying attention to what we were doing on the show and they never promoted the show, so many people didn’t even know about B:TB&tB when it first aired. On one hand, no one saw the show, but on the other hand, we were probably allowed more creative freedom because of it. If it looked like the crew was having fun making that show, it’s because we were.

"Won't someone please think of the children?" First of all- wonderful show and a great reminder that campy doesn't have to mean bad. Second, this is a bit silly and a reminder that even the mildest form of innuendo is somehow worse than decades of violence in cartoons. Then again, this is after the time when a song about repressed urges could get in Hunchback of Notre Dame and the film got a U rating in the UK (definitely wouldn't happen now!)
@Polycomical Жыл бұрын
Also the UK had its fair share of daft censorship- the original Ninja Turtles was called Hero Turtles (for some reason the Conservative government of the time had a problem with ninjas. But then Labour government came in and John Prescott had a sweet right hook so there was no issue there). Also for a time Top Cat was called Boss Cat because there was a product called Top Cat in the UK and for some reason people thought idiots couldn't tell the difference.

I was one of those people that wasn't sold on the art style right away when this show came.out. However after watching a few episodes I grew to appreciate it. Even more than that though it was the writing that won me over. Brave and the Bold was so much fun and borrowed from all over comics history in a way that should delight any long time bat fan. I vaguely remember seeing the version with the finger waggle when I first watched it. To be honest I feel like anyone getting worked up over this bit is engaging in a little pearl clutching. The song is probably going to go over the heads of the majority of the younger audience. Teens and adults though? Its perfect for them. Which isn't unusual for this show. Like many good animated shows this one made sure to appeal to a broader audience. It made sure that even if its target audience, kids, were watching with an older sibling, or parent, or whomever, the odds were that you'd find at least some part of the episode that interested you.

The episode aired unedited in Australia first, and when clips of the song made it onto KZbin in advance of it being shown in the States, CN censors saw the KZbin comments ie "How did this get past censors?" etc and that's what motivated the cut aways and new animation. Ultimately the episode never aired in the States and the first appearance, besides youtube, was the blu-ray as I recall (or maybe as an extra feature on the dvd release).

Here's the power of animation. The most suggestive thing about that clip is Huntress looking at her finger with a smirk before wagging it. That's punctuation. This might be the most infamous episode, but despite it's reputation as being the camp and silly Batman show this series did get way darker than any of the previous animated shows. I especially remember the episode where Batman has gone back in time and has to handle being around his good friend the original Blue Beetle who had died. The episode ends basically with Batman saying goodbye for the last time, knowing he's going off to die. There's also the one time we see him take the mask off, when he confronts Joe Chill, struggling to not kill his parents' killer. And there's an opening short where some judgemental magic hero who's name I forget turns a criminal into cheese. Ha ha! So silly! Except then they fade out on his still aware, terrified eyes as the sounds of rats squeaking is getting louder... 😬
