It's a bit of an annoying move but, I think retro people got real upset when DKOldies smashed a bunch of "bootleg GBAs" that were not only real but apparently rare. In that case, something was actually being taken away. Working GBAs for one but like- rare and collectable ones- how does a store that claims to be all about retro not do some basic freaking research before not only destroying inventory but proudly recording it? I think they smashed some games that were also real but they thought were bootlegs. Fun times.

@Dreadjaws Жыл бұрын
I think the anger is completely justified. Nobody likes to get enthusiastic about something that piques their interest only to realize they're actually just being sold something. This is why people recoil all the time at these sort of publicity stunts. There are ways to make this fun and interesting while also make it evident that it's not a real thing. He could have, for instance, showed himself buying the bootleg cartdrige from a russian street vendor that turned out to be JonTron in a very obvious fake costume and accent. He could have pretended to browse the merchandise and ignore genuinely valuable stuff being sold for cheap prices and focusing exclusively on the console and cartdrige (complete with a warning from the vendor about the product being "dangerous" or something like that). Then when he got home he could be trying to plug the console in increasingly high-tech devices and instead of "finding" a proper adapter he could conceive a ridiculous contraption that would allow him to adapt the cartdrige to a Nintendo Switch slot to use that console's wi-fi. Something like that. Make it silly and over-the-top. Make it evident from the start that the whole thing is just a stunt and people will have no problem joining in the fun. If you deliberately try to deceive them (and, again, for the purposes of selling them a product) they're only going to get very rightfully upset.

It could hardly be seen it would have faded so significantly by now. Even if it had spent most of its time in a box, away from light. I have booklets that have been stored in boxes or bags and inside drawers for decades, and most of the ink has simply faded into near oblivion.

Oh my. I understand as I too would've been infuriated at a fake NES game that turned out to be a Windows 10 game!! I like watching video essays and documentaries like these as they show me what not to do. In particular, with an idea I had for a graphic novel series, I had the idea to do a prequel that would be serialised as a webcomic with a different comic panel layout (2×2 instead of 2×3 or 3×4 grids) and genre, where I would then hide clues to the first graphic novel in the series. Prior to watching this video, I didn't think anyone would dislike the sudden shift in genre and plot (in particular, the sudden shift from slice of life to sci-fi), and I realised that the comics that led me to come up with the idea of a prequel webcomic were done in a way where the same characters, locations, essence, and genre were all kept but the story arcs were longer. I could still create the prequel if I wanted to, but would have to do it while developing the book series and would have to introduce the book elements gradually. Basically, the prequel webcomic would be planned alongside the main book series.

I've not watched Game Grumps' channel. I prefer watching YT channels like Gaming Historian, Slope's, James Rolfe's channel, and others that educate us.

One of these days, maybe I'll be able to figure out why anyone finds The Game Grumps remotely appealing.

I would've loved to see some behind the scenes stuff for how they constructed the more convincing parts of the fakery; but obviously it'd have to come from them. Might've made the blowback a little less severe.

That Pine Pot neon sign is really badass, was that a custom job or did you buy it somewhere? Would love to hang it in my game room and have to explain the reference to everyone

Looking back on the Soviet Jump Game incident, before watching any of this video, I feel like this was around the time that Game Grumps as a brand was sorta jumping the shark. This game came out at around the time when Game Grumps was really pushing their improv skits into their content and it's a big reason why I turned against Game Grumps eventually. It no longer was just two dudes on a couch enjoying games, or even a group of friends enjoying games. And I think I wouldn't be alone in saying that this was the main appeal of Game Grumps for both myself and a lot of people. If anything, Game Grumps has turned me off from channels that take this direction (Alpharad Deluxe comes to mind. Started as my answer to what I was missing from Game Grumps before Alpharad decided that everything needs to be a bit). I'll edit this comment when I watch the video through.

Wasn't too bothered by it, myself, although I found the whole thing suspect from the start. Figured partway in it'd be some advert for a thing. Lo and behold, 'twas.

The thing with GG but more with Arin in specific, its that he thinks some of this stunts are "cool" and whatever he does is "cool" and interesting and dont get me wrong it is a cool marketing stunt....if you do it right of course, which Arin isnt very known for doing stuff that is particulary "intelligent" enough to loop back to being "cool" The dude is very very obsessed with the NES era of gaming and i get that, there is something about that era that always evokes creativity and innovation, where "games were games and you didnt needed any other added bullcrap or fluff, it was you, the controller and the game ahead" and i really get that mentality i really do, but Arin sometimes forgets that tech evolves overtime, tastes and trends as well, people doesnt stay the same all the time, and even if nostalgia is a powerful thing it can be also one hell of a double edged sword, this game was doomed to fail not just because he false adverticed it but because its not a very strong concept to begin with to gather enough solid foundation to even stand up for itself among the other more succesful games on its genre. Nobody except people around Arin's age and likes were going to play this game for much long, not with more than 20 or 30 years of expossure of any other kind of games, the game its fine but its surfice level fine and that's it, with all that Arin does its always "enough" to be passable but like everything he does also ends up back again into the ether were it came out.

Honestly I thought it was cool marketing for a neat game concept. I never played it but thought it seemed neat.

It's funny that Arin actually trolled the entire retro gamers with this fake and click bait video they've made. I gotta say, that it's actually a genius way to do it. Even if it means manipulating your fans and tricking them into buying their upcoming indie game. Anyways congrats on getting your Blu-Ray on one of your vids you've made on KZbin.

I thought this ARG or marketing or whatever you want to call it was fun, you get to a point when you are like is it real or not, then more towards the not of course, but then they had to put out the announcement that it was just an ad before finishing the arc (from memory) because everyone was having a sook.
