Awkwardly standing behind a wall for a cover assassination with no cover system resulting in you getting spotted passed walls and through thresholds. Walking assassinations rarely functioned meaning you’d get the really slow throw over assassination animation which would get you spotted because the guard rotations were basically faster then the assassination animation. This slow animation would also trigger in double assassinations which would just get you killed because the second guard would hit you and scream alerting all the other guards and they’d show up to hit you by the time you finally chained the second guard’s assassination. Stealth was actually so awful.

One thing i noticed in AC Valhalla is that when the wolf bites eivor in her childhood, it triggered the isu memories to resurface. And throughout her life she unconsciously started mumbling odin's quotes (you can hear those during the cairn activities) and in time she somehow suppressed those memories but they resurfaced again after she found her father's axe and remembered the betrayal kjotve did with her father(same how loki betrayed odin) They could've used this idea of how basim started getting those nightmares. We know his father was betrayed by his close friend which lead to his death. This could lead to the djinn's first appearance and also him starting to see nehal. And i wish we could see more nehal's interaction the same way odin's interaction with eivor after her assassinations like during every assassination basim finds nehal lurking nearby and making him question his morals and the creed.

i love your highlighting of expression in the movement system. thats something so few games implement. The spiderman games are probably the best traditional action game examples I can think of where a game does have amazing movement, but I also think of more niche games like the EA Skate series that allows you to use the thumbsticks for precise control and expression. Then games like rollerdrome are an incredible evolution of these ideas. I'm waiting for the day though where an action game has movement expression on the level of an EA Skate. There's a recent parkour game, 'Rooftops and Alleys', and I play a game like that and instantly think 'Imagine if I also had guns how cool this could be'

I think the AC franchise was such a big influence on open world game design at it's core that now there are games that branched out and do something insanely well, while AC is still stuck in the middle not really commiting to everything. Example: the way assasination missions are now built are similar to Hitman games, but are too shallow to compete with those games. The movement systems are struggling with either letting the player climb anything like in the Zelda games VS having a parkour simulator, the issue being that Zelda has the stamina mechanic, while the AC parkour has only gotten worse once the series moved away from the cities. The stealth gameplay just can't reach Ghost recon wildlands because a modern setting just adds much more to the experience like gadgets, different enemy types, vehicles, that AC doesn't have because of it's focus on history. Even the upcoming Japan AC is too late, since it will never be able to match the combat of Sekiro or the masterpice that was Ghost of Tsushima. Arguably, Tsushima is the best AC game because the people behind it didn't need to have the restrictions behind them. We live in the age of sequels and remakes, and I think in case of AC, the franchise only makes it worse for the creators of the game, it doesn't help them. They have so many games, that no matter which direction they go - they can not build on top of the entire foundation, something is going to be worse. I think they should drop the AC franchise, and make a new fantasy or sci-fi franchise instead, with similar gameplay to AC and Far cry, but giving them the creative freedom to really move the formula forward. Currently they are just stuck in the historical thing, which reallly limits them. For that t happen, they need to flop much harder, as the investors don't want to risk a new franchise in 2024.
@TheD4046 ай бұрын
I feel like a problem I have with modern ac is that the game always reminds you it's a game. The enemy level icons, the health bars, and like it was mentioned, the fact that the game is more about the assassins rather than an intriguing story and world that makes you care more.
@LevisH216 ай бұрын
I have no idea what you are talking about. Origins and Odyssey barely had anything to do with the assassins. in Origins everything was about revenge and with Odyssey everything was about being a mercenary and reuniting with your lost family. I am actually surprised by the saving the franchise argument. I guess it exceeded expectations and gave OG fans some serious nostalgia b0ner that ... It was never developed as such, but hey that's always a point in its favor that this discussion ended up taking place after it launched.

For me, the rough story of an AC game that honours the original games, makes progress, and builds on what makes them great-to focus on the assassin's side: One character over at least 3 games. This allows for character development, gameplay mechanics and story progression that makes logical sense. Game 1: Start off as a young adult/teen, in a cohort of students into the assassin's guild. The guild is well-established and large with resources. Here, you progress. This allows character progression with a lack of skills/equipment. In game 1, we have mini time skips, like AC2-the character matures, and is refined. Cities we visit have fully functioning networks of informants, allies, etc, and a bureau leader. The game progresses along logical lines, as you'd expect, as the years progress in game. Different cities, are visited, etc. In this game, we start at age 17, and end at around age 29. Game 2: Starts where the last left-age 29. It'll end in early 40s. In the early-mid 30s, our character, as he rises the ranks-recruits new assassins, establishing asset networks, etc. By the end, he ends up establishing new bureaus in new cities-he arranges resource routes and so on, like black flag. Game 3: early 40s-50s, the character eventually establishes a new assassin's HQ in a new region. He establishes all the bureaus, selects the bureau leaders, etc. He still goes on missions, of course-but it's primarily personal story driven-much like AC revelations. Between game 2 and 3, you buy stores, renovate them, upgrade bureaus via rank, with money and so on. Bring back Assassins to kill groups of enemies, and so on. The finer details aside-but that's the overall Assassin's path I think we'd all like to see. One character, to see a fully fleshed out story, over each individual game, but also an entire set of games. Truly rising the ranks. I thought of, and wrote this out while half asleep-so I'm sorry for the rough read. But yeah, that's how I'd like to see the Assassin's story side progress.

Man i love Mirage. It's not what I would have predicted AC would turn into after playing the original games, but it has the spirit and it definitely has the fun factor. I'm not sure why i love it and other ac veterans don't feel as in love with it. Maybe it's because i haven't played Valhalla or even origins, so they can see mirage through the lens of Valhalla's gameplay, where as all i see in Mirage is a game that has more interactivity than the originals, less control of parkour, but more emphasis on traditional stealth. Plus the world and atmosphere are beautiful and intricate. Mirage checked all the boxes for me and I had a lot of doubts after years of rpg after whatever syndicate was.

I think Mirage was exactly what Assassin's Creed needed. It felt like a reset for the series. Yes, it wasn't a full experience and was just an upgraded DLC, but it felt nice after 3 huge RPGs (which i loved personally) and enjoyed very much. We had stealth that actually worked after the Valhalla stealth fumble, Basim was a glass cannon with combat that felt rewarding once you had it down pat, especially on Master Assassin difficulty, and we had an actual assassin's pov of the Hidden Ones and the war they fought. I also just completed the Perma Death mode on Master Assassin difficulty on Mirage, which i think everyone should try. It's so good and really fleshes out the game. This is coming from a guy who's been playing since 2007 and has love for the whole series. I wouldn't mind a pallet cleanser game in between the larger games. Sometimes basim will just stop running because he doesn’t want to but to counter this you need to start an animation because like you said you control your animation instead of your position so having a button to always trigger an animation to cancel out another is useful because it can be used to stop this acceleration period or stop basim from taking a stroll instead of just running

It was a concept that people had been dying to see out of Assassin'ss Creed throughout their long run of mediocre titles. But the biggest problem for AC was that GoT was a better Assassin's Creed game than any of those other games. Assassin's Creed is an incredibly important series, with a lot of great games. But now we're seeing games developed by the people who were inspired by the AC games and are making more interesting and stylistic games than Ubisoft can. Assassin's Creed is held back by the fact that it is an Assassin's Creed game. I think it's time to retire the franchise and move the team on to doing something new and fresh.

The main issue I think AC faces nowadays: Almost NOBODY who worked on the first game is working on AC anymore. The reason AC Mirage feels like a weird copy of AC 1, because the devs had never worked on AC 1 and now had to struggle to figure out what made that game good and tick. And thus, they "rediscovered" what AC was, but ended up just making AC 1 again, with very similar shortcomings. It's fascinating how Ubisoft has ironically lost the DNA of AC and barely understand their ancestors. I bet 99% of the devs don't even remember AC is supposed to have bunch of esoteric conspiracy theories as a major theme. I bet many of them forget the MC has a hidden blade. I bet they have no idea what to do with the series anymore because they don't understand it. That's why AC is basically just going with the incredibly dull and predictable "Mythology = Isu". It's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO uninspired and boring. Why? Because they're just modern retelling of myths with the aesthetics of Godfall. That's one massive part that sucks: Isu and Animus aesthetics suck. They are so generic and boring. I've never liked how the Isu looked with their stupid light lines and concrete, but sure... Gild everything even more in the next one... And the Animus... It has never felt like a simulation, like you're in a computer. The "glitches" are not real computer glitches. The sci-fi visuals just always take me out of the experience. So what should AC do? I think they should first and foremost make the Animus less sci-fi. They should make almost like an "analog" version of it. Some examples: - Instead of having vague walls of some glitchy lines at the edges of the map, have lines of bytecode. - Instead of "desync" just flying the camera up into the air, it should give out error messages and basically re-rerender the entire scene. Basically not hiding the actual re-loading of the game world, just making it looks bit more "fancy". - Any sci-fi magic will pop a small terminal window that quickly runs pseudo-code. It shows that the Animus powers are just manipulations of the simulation. That alone should put the devs on the right track again. But I dunno if they will let go of the "mythology = Isu" so easily, especially that they're probably salivating after God of War right now... So maybe they could still just do some research on any kind of wacky conspiaries that relate to these myths. Instead of doing boring retellings, they could actually do something new when incorporating these crazy "modern" myths.
@thefreshvince8795 ай бұрын
well the mythology actually works, depending on which game. In odyssey, the reasons for the mythological creatures are given being part of an isu project to create genetically modified animals with superpowers and its fine. they are complete side objectives and you only have to do them for the atlantis dlc.
