Wow sorry I never noticed that! You just cut it off with a pair of wire cutters. Leave six beads or so on the other side just in case for adjustment, but that should do it.

Great detailed how-to on replacing a Kohler flapper. I actually took the old one out and laid it next to the new one and counted the beads on the chain from the flapper to the float, adjusted the float accordingly, then counted the beads (again) from the top of the float to the connection. Reattached the little metal 'bead holder' to the bead then attached the clip to the handle rod. Seems to work OK - having the old one to use as a guide for length and float placement took some guesswork out of the effort. Thanks for all your efforts - this was very helpful.

Thank you so much! Great video!! I was having a problem with my toilet triple flushing and occasionally refilling because it was leaking and realized the replacement flapper that was put in a while back was not the correct one and it did not have a float! Not having the old correct flapper with float as a guide I didn’t quite understand how to install the new one properly from the instructions in the package. Your video was wonderful! I’m so grateful! Excellent Kohler Flapper Install video from "That Fix It Guy"
@richschmitt46212 жыл бұрын
Best video for Kohler Flapper and Floats! Very well done, easy to follow. Thank you! I'd recommend removing the old flapper and float and adjusting the replacement unit BEFORE you install it inside the tank. Match the position of the float and the overall chain length while both are outside of the tank. It's easier to adjust and you don't risk dropping the float retainer disks or the top-of-chain clip down into the tank drain port. After the old and new flapper-float-chain are matched, install the new one and make sure it flushes okay. It should, since it was matched to the old setup. DO NOT cut the chain until it flushes okay and you know it is set correctly. As you said, don't risk making the chain too short. I like your idea of keeping extra chain beads for later adjustments! Taking the old flapper out isn't fun. With either the hard plastic flapper arms with slots, or an old hardened-rubber flapper with holes, you run the risk of snapping the tangs off the flush valve's pipe. But the flexible rubber on the new flapper should let you install and remove it easily, for adjustments. Don't think you really need to install the new flapper and chain and then do all adjustments inside the tank.

I should have been clearer - the "float" is the small one on the flapper chain, not the big float that controls the water shutoff.

I have a tank with what i think is a short tank. When I flush it opens the flapper just enough to let water out but flapper does not fully open. In order to flush i have to hold the handle. Do you think a flapper with a float might help it open all the way?
@afmara2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank you for the video. Is there a gasket that may be placed on the part on which the flapper rests when it's down? The Kohler flapper (GP85160) in my Devonshire tank is only 18 months old. The flapper has been intermittently leaking for many months at this point. The rim of the white plastic pipe onto which the flapper rests when down is angled rather than straight. This angling seems to be contributing to the leaking. As a result, it seems a soft gasket attached to this rim might resolve the leak. Your advice/suggestions would be appreciated. : )
@ThatFixItGuy2 жыл бұрын
If you have replace your flapper and the rim of the flush valve where the flapper sits is smooth then the seal to the flush valve is likely your issue. It is that black runner that set at the bottom of the tank. One more thing it could be the your flush valve is cracked. You have to remove the tank to change the flush valve seal. If you are removing the tank I always tell people to rebuild the whole tank with all new parts. That way you know there will be no issue.
@afmara2 жыл бұрын
@@ThatFixItGuy Thank you for replying. Replacing the flapper didn't resolve the intermittent filling of the tank. The good news is that I found the answer on Fluidmaster's website. The cause of the tank losing water to the bowl was SIPHONING. The refill tube was pushed too far into the flush valve's overflow pipe causing the tube to be well below the water level inside the tank. Hence the siphoning. I learned something new! The problem hasn't occurred since I adjusted the refill tube. Fingers crossed the fix sticks. A happy new year to you! From Fluidmaster's website: "7. Siphoning Siphoning occurs when the refill tube is pushed too far into the flush valves overflow pipe. If the end of the tube is inserted into the overflow pipe and the end of the tube is lower than the water level inside the tank, water will siphon out of the tank and into the bowl. This will cause the water level in the tank to drop and a Ghost Flush will occur. Make sure the refill tube is connected to the top of the flush valves overflow pipe so that it is above the water line at all times."

What is the purpose of the float? And what does bringing it lower do for the flush?
@ThatFixItGuy3 жыл бұрын
The float is to help your flapper stay up longer for a proper flush. Lowering the float just allows you to keep the flapper up just a little bit longer. If it stays up too long it will be a double flush or not long enough is a short flush.

How much water should remain after flushing the toilet and adjusting the flapper and float? Thank you
@ThatFixItGuy3 жыл бұрын
I don’t ever go by how much is left in the tank. That varies so much from toilet to toilet I don’t pay attention. You should look at the water leaving the bowl. You want to make sure there’s enough water to take down solids, but not so much water that it double flushes. Does that make sense?

I replaced the flapper but it is still leaking into the toilet bowl. Any suggestions?
@ThatFixItGuy3 жыл бұрын
If the flapper was replaced and it is still leaking more than likely it is the flush valve gasket. That is the piece that the flapper sits on. You will have to pull the toilet tank off to replace it. I say rebuild it all if your going to pull the tank off
@ThatFixItGuy3 жыл бұрын
Make sure there is nothing stuck where the flapper sits on the flush valve. It should be smooth. Then that is it or the over flow tube on the flush valve is crack. Either way if you are pulling the tank you will be replacing it.
