As much as I've learned about pedals and various effects from watching TPS, the thing I appreciate the most is learning about how to listen and actually hear the differences between them all. Thanks for a superlative show and learning experience.

I had the Blues Breaker back in the mid 90's and like a fool (as most of us) sold it several years ago to fund another pedal. One of the pedals I really wish I never would have sold. Another pedal I sold was a mid 80's Pro Co Rat. The never ending obsession of gear. Not going to add all the guitars and amps I wish I had back. Another outstanding show cats! Always tuning in and loving it!

Love the show! As a drummer in my 52nd year of playing (62 in total), sound is the most important thing I strive to deliver with my drums. That is one of the largest realms out there. But watching your show has been instrumental in further developing my ears and being aware of the most subtle of nuanced elements. The slightest change in frequencies and tonality are easier to hear day after day. For my ears, once Mick plugged in the Stratocaster with the high gain Bluesbreaker, a massive smile came upon my giddy face!! They way your settings interacted with the pickups and Mick's hands, it just exploded with rich, lush and endlessly joyous tones. Ritchie Blackmore's tone (or tones as it changed a lot over the decades) is my favorite Stratocaster sound. While this isn't remotely that sound, it had a similar impact on my senses.

Just wanted to say I've been watching the show from my parent's TV for the last couple of weeks - where I'm not logged in. That means no premium and I wanted to recognise and thank you for not spamming the video with ads. I know I should expect as much from TPS, but I think it bears worth saying. A show idea for you: exploring the tone controls on some traditional overdrive pedals. (Especially now you have an actual Bluesbreaker) - watching the show today I think I rediscovered that I've been wrongfully assuming that the tone circuit on the pedal is the same as a guitar tone circuit. OBVIOUSLY thats not the case, especially where you've got 3 band EQ, but, what about singular tone knobs? And the same for amps! Think theres some serious education to be done there.

An original English Bluesbreaker was my "always on" pedal for years with a Strat into a Mesa Boogie Mk III. Cut a little of the zingy high end, gave a bit more lower mids and just a hair of breakup. Then I got a King of Tone and quickly realized that without the high gain option, setting the KoT to the "boost" setting pretty much matches the tones exactly and with more volume available if desired. Side note for Mick, if you haven't tried a Mk III in a while try to borrow one. I recently picked one up again and it compares very favorably to my TS-1 in a slightly brighter way and with more gain and volume available when needed. Plugged into a Two-Rock 2x12 it sounds even better with SO many sounds available thanks to it's powerful tone knobs and graphic EQ.

The experience you're having with the Marshall BB in the first half is almost exactly what happened for me last night! Messing around with drive sounds between a wampler belle, pantheon, sugar drive, tube screamer, stacking them, etc..... man nothing sounded as good as the 1962 portion of my Keeley Tone Workstation with the tone and gain both at or over 2 o'clock. That simple circuit is magic!

"My sound" for years was a Strat into a BD-2 set to edge of breakup into literally blackface for the occasion. I actually started grabbing my "grab and go" board for rehearsals, a Boss BCB-30 loaded with a JB-2, CE-3, and RV-2. Playing the BD-2 side of the JB has been reminding me what an incredible sounding and FEELING circuit that is.

Great show! Worth noting Mick states he finds the Blues Drives a bit "fizzy" at the high end. And he's right! It does! But on the Wazacraft they addressed this common criticism and added the "Standard v Custom" switch and by selecting the latter it gets rid of that. I do appreciate Mick and Dan clearly made the point they were wanting to do a shoot out of the originals though. It is a - to me and many Waza other BD owners - a HUGE point though and I would have loved it demonstrated somewhere in the vid. Still a great vid though, not whinging too much haha!

A long time ago I decided to go for a Bluesbreakre, but the guy in the guitar shop (the place I always bought my gear from and trusted) said the BD-2 had more balls. He was right and I used it sparingly, with the tone turned down quite a bit. But it is nice to have an in-depth comparison and learn that the BB is well-designed and has a place. I think the best thing to do is to buy them both and stack them.

Timely episode friends! I appreciated that your feelings on the Blues Breaker and Blues Driver were much like my own at the 14:27 mark lol. When Dan said "except blues" YEP exactly my issue with it. Mick sounds great, testing a new USB DA converter, -132dB signal to noise ratio, jitter 0.9pS... anyway it sounds fantastic! Remember that with LOG pots, using them below noon will be too much loss in the signal! One reason I hate 1M log/audio pots. Dan fixed a SuperFuzz for a friend of mine. Man that thing is wild and crazy in any of the settings. Mick, remember your new pedal options probably have not broken in yet. You need 40 or so hours that will help out on the midrange. I use a DAC into a dual TS and then Signal Scope Pro with the oscillator output with pink noise + 40->10K sine sweep up/down + triangle wave for 24 hours before I ship. Really breaks in those capacitors so the mids come clean. Great show guys, thanks... just got pedals from Fedex dropped off, looks like more on the way!

For me I’ve owned a Blues breaker and works best with a VOX or Marshall amps not fender types x The Blues driver BD2 for me is great with VOX amps as I own an AC30 with blue speakers and recently bought a Blues Driver BD2 and love it you just got to have the tone control at 10 o clock level noon gain 1 to two o clock into a slightly crunchy amp and it’s amazing I think probably the most used pedal out there ……Kelly Jones…Snowy White…the list goes on it’s so much more versatile than the Blues breaker which I always found very sterile sounding a bit like John Mayer who is the Michael Buble of guitar players sorry just my opinion lots like him 😂😂 Great review guys

That's ultimately why I got rid of mine. It's a really versatile pedal and underrated as a distortion actually. That thing has a LOT of gain on tap! But that fizz drove me nuts to be honest. I moved to a blues breaker instead and that became my favorite drive.

I have this Bluesbraker. I love how transparent it is, amazing pedal

I have both of them. I like the Boss more because it's more versatile, it has also more gain. Better suited for different amps in different situations.

Great topic, and timely! My current Bluesbreaker pedal is The Broker by Matthews Effects, and I've been toying with the idea of getting a BD-2 as well. This gives me something to chew on. Thanks, mates!

I am with you on the Blues Breaker being awesome Mick but then I have been for years now! I am thinking of getting a re-issue but right not I have a few different clones that I like! One has that chewyness, that you speak of, in spades and I love it,,,so much fun to play! I think for me, that is almost as much fun as the listening part! Thanks guys!

Bought a BB when they first came out... People bagged it because it didn't have enough gain or volume... I loved it, and it's has never left my rig..... it's had a lot of friends along the way... SD1, Tim, OCD, ODR1, Riverside, and numerous Comps and Fuzz. I felt pretty validated when it made the big come back....

Fellas, I didn’t see you switch to the Mod setting on the Halcyon. This is really a great variation on the theme. All of the Halcyon series offers this switch, and they are killer takes on the original.

Great video guys. Imo bd2 is great as a transparent boost, blues breaker for taking a broken up amp into the rich harmonics and feedback, hence the name, pairs well with an am beano boost, great for soloing. They’re all good, to me it’s all amp dependent. But with the bd2, I’d rather have a am modded tubescreamer or prince of tone and for the transparent boost thing OCD all day long.

Perfectly timed fellas. I’ve been wondering about my blues driver as my main drive. It’s doing light to mid drive for indie classics and simple rock into a deluxe reissue with a Japanese (and mid heavy) Tele. Lately I’ve been feeling it’s got too much top end fizz, gaping empty mids, not much low. Liking that Keely one.

My favorite blues breaker pedal is the J Rockett 45 Caliber. That thing has a snarl and a bite and a glorious crunch sound. It's AC/DC in a box. Totally retains note separation while also rocking hard the entire time.

Yes, those are killer! A bandmate has one, and I'm anyways amazed how good it sounds. Is the Caliber based on the Bluesbreaker topology? I mean the pedal, not the amp...
@GeoffByrdMusic

@@Stikoun Yeah, it's based on JTM 45 Marshall amp. It's a bluesbreaker topology indeed! I got this directly from the mouth of the guys at J Rockett.

Nothing like being on the fence for a while on considering buying a pedal. Buying that pedal and seeing a brand new hour long discussion about it and another pedal you were considering 🤘 bd-2w is on its way

Mick, you are sounding Epic with that Les Paul, Deluxe Reverb and Blues Breaker. Your playing sounds very inspired, ZZ Top tones popping through. Dan, that Tele with the Blues Driver sounds huge!

To me, the dry knob on the Halcyon is a feature that i love because it allows for ''parallel distortion'' ... something i discovered in my teens when i tried my friends Fender Deluxe 85 with the red knobs, or one could also say it's like a blend of your clean amp and dirty amp on two faders 🤟
