In Australia, a digger is a war veteran. This came about in reference to world war 1 and 2 war veterans that fought from dug out trenches. But it is now used for all Australian armed service personnel, past and present, with the utmost respect for their service and sacrifice. This track always gives me chills, love it ❤

I love the way the story is told, with each verse from a different party's perspective. You can see the lives of each main character in detail and how everyone else looks to them. Like the woman - who reminds the veteran of his late wife, and is just some stupid bint to the muggers, and to herself she's a single mother who hates her life but is doing what she has to to survive. It's an awesome way to start getting people to think about it.

It’s about hard times colliding. The old man who fought a war, the young lady stripper living on benifits, the young dude who never had a chance in life and they all collide in this tragedy. Here's another fun fact. The artificial voice sampled at the beginning is recorded from a train platform in Adelaide (their home city). You could press a button on the train platform and that voice would tell you when the next train would be arriving and if it was express or would stop at all stations.

Adelaide lad right here and this is my favourite track from the Hilltops. Everything from the way they sampled the voice recordings from the platform information machines, to the sounds of the trains, the tracks used and those lyrics that paint the story from each perspective.... Knowing those actual locations etc, this track not only gives me vivid images of the characters playing out their stories, it also is a track that I'll put on if I'm away from home and want to reconnect with memories from living in this area. The way that they tell a simple snippit of a story, in such detail, then tie them all together. This is what Aussie hip hop is all about. Lyrically expressing the truth and rawness of life while giving people perspectives to ponder. Not sure if you put it all together in the end because I know that I had to listen to it a few times to connect all the nuances of each of the three stories. It's like the movie "fight club" but with a slick beat, woodwind and audible treats for your ear holes. Love your work man. ✌️

I don't usually get real excited about rap, but the Hilltop Hoods pick the best samples, and put them together in the best way. They're great storytellers, and I think there's something about hearing them rap in something close to my own accent too. They have an original style and they're awesome.
@Fluffy-34NEO2 жыл бұрын
1st verse is from the old diggers (veterans) perspective, he smiles at the chick that reminds him of his late wife and she says something he cant hear cause of his hearing aids, he is the "old mug" thats staring at her in verse 2 that she walks past and says "hey wtf you staring at" and verse 3 is the guys that get on the train and rob him. its built so well too because from his older perspective shes just a pretty lady and they are just a group of boys laughing and joking, from her perspective hes a seedy old man and they are a group of thugs and from their perspective hes just an easy way to make money cause they have had a hard life and shes just in the way...

Hilltop Hoods are an Australian hip hop group that formed in 1991 in Blackwood, Adelaide, South Australia. They are regarded as pioneers of the "larrikin-like" style of Australian hip hop.The group was founded by Suffa (Matthew David Lambert) and Pressure (Daniel Howe Smith), who were joined by DJ Debris (Barry John M. Francis) after fellow founder, DJ Next (Ben John Hare), left in 1999. The group released its first extended play, Back Once Again, in 1997 and have subsequently released eight studio albums, two "restrung" albums and three DVDs.Six of their eight albums have peaked at number one on the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Albums Charts, recently setting the record for most No. 1 Albums by an Australian band or group: The Hard Road (2006), State of the Art (2009), Drinking from the Sun (2012), Walking Under Stars (2014), Drinking from the Sun, Walking Under Stars Restrung (2016) and The Great Expanse (2019). Three tracks have reached the top 10 on the ARIA Singles Chart-"Chase That Feeling" (2009), "I Love It", featuring Sia (2011) and "Higher", featuring James Chatburn (2015) - while a further two tracks - "Cosby Sweater" (2014) and "1955" (2016) - reached the top 5. "1955", featuring Montaigne & Tom Thum, peaked at number 2 in the Australian charts. Peace out.

Was waiting for this reaction lol. Yeah as someone from Adelaide 'stopping all stations' pretty much sums up riding the train system in Adelaide during the 90s. I was a teen in the late 90's and was heavily into graffiti and hip hop. Was from the Western burbs however Adelaide is small so everyone kinda knew or knew of each other back then. Hilltop Hoods knew alot of 73A graffiti artists in the southern burbs. Long story short as a graffiti artist i rode the transit system everyday as it was basically the life. Seen alot of shit happen back then on the lines. These days times have changed, from the few recent years i have caught a train. Security is all revamped, cameras everywhere and even police patrols enter rail cars at any random station.

Early morn, train station Aching from the arthritis This war veteran knows what a hard time is He needs his pension, dementia and half blind is The reason he rides the train with no car licence So he boards with an expired ticket has a swipe Gets a fine 'cause the change he got don't add up right We're taking about a man who never lived a lavish life Caught up in the age of computer chips and satellites A lovely lady boards looking tired and half awake He smiles, she's reminds him of his wife that passed away She says something as she walks right past his way His old hearing aid don't last quite half the day Some young gentlemen alive with their laughter Approach the old timer and put a knife to his heart to Explain that money or blood's the price of their barter To a man whose friends probably died for their fathers [Scratches: DJ Debris] "Taking a train, taking a train" "I-I- I head toward the train-tra-train station" "Riding the caboose to hell" "W-W- We're from a city heroin loves, the devil's in charge" Whatever it takes can justify Whatever ends we make Whatever the price To the end of a life, it's just an observation So take a ride we're stopping all stations It's been a long night the suns lifting on a cold Morning but she's drugged and drunk tripping on her stroll On the way home, she's done with stripping on a pole But she can't pay for her son living on the dole Jumps a train puts on her gloves she's wearing black Being watched by some old mug she's glaring back She's on edge and got the bug from sharing smack So she says, "Hey, what the fuck you staring at?" He smiles, an unsteady hand rubs on his dome She takes a seat, a messy band of ruffs board alone To the digger with a machete at his lungs and he's prone He can barely stand but ready to stand up for his own She tries to help him she doesn't choose to flee the car And catches a blow with enough bruise to leave a scar She starts fainting, the rooms moving and seeing stars Aint it amazing how courageous human beings are? [Scratches: DJ Debris] "Taking a train, taking a train" "I-I- I head toward the train-tra-train station" "Riding the caboose to hell" "W-W- We're from a city heroin loves, the devil's in charge" Whatever it takes can justify Whatever ends we make Whatever the price To the end of a life, it's just an observation So take a ride we're stopping all stations He knows nothing but toil, strife and hard yakka Pissed at the world for playing wife in a slammer This man was never given a life on a damn platter So he jumps a train with knife and bandanna Boys at his back, sleazy, hardened and far From givin' a fuck, an easy target his mark He sees an old man and says "See we'll part with your hard Earned cash or rest in peace we can start with your heart?" Some girl steps not afraid she's gonna cop it sweet And gets decked before she made it even on her feet The old man leaped to her aid and to his horror he'd Thrusted his chest into the blade of his robber's piece He grabbed the wallet, dropped the knife as he fled the car Concerned about the loss of life he'd never went this far What's done is done, he'd got the prize and he'd spent his half Of two dollars in change and a pension card So take a ride, 'cause we're stopping all stations

The story is all about one train ride from the perspective of three different people. the first verse is the old digger (veteran), sees the young girl board and then the hoodlums board and try rob him. The second verse is from the girl who sees the old man looking at her as she boards the train, and then the hoods board and try rob the old guy so she tried to help hi and gets knocked out for her troubles. The third verse is from the point of view of the hoods, who board the train to rob someone and accidentally end up killing the old guy. If you enjoy the hoods songs.. after listening to the studio versions..... go listen to the (restrung) versions of their hit songs. It's different but also just as brilliant

The Aussie “ twang “ makes it easy to lose straight fire bars, when your used to the American hip hop accent. Props for digging in bro. A digger is a war vet, you need to know that to work that verse out

I love this song so much. The Hard Road is my favourite Hoods album of all time! ❤ After seeing ThatSinger struggling to find the correct lyrics, I hope these help. [Intro] The next train to Adelaide will depart from Platform One. Stopping all stations.. [Verse 1: Pressure] Early morn, train station, aching from the arthritis, This war veteran knows what a hard time is. He needs his pension, dementia and half blind is, The reason he rides the train with no car licence. So he boards with an expired ticket has a swipe, Gets a fine 'cause the change he got don't add up right. We're taking 'bout a man who never lived a lavish life, Caught up in the age of computer chips and satellites. A lovely lady boards looking tired and half awake, He smiles, she's reminds him of his wife that passed away. She says something as she walks right past his way, His old hearing aid don't last quite half the day. Some young gentlemen alive with their laughter, Approach the old timer and put a knife to his heart to, Explain that money or blood's the price of their barter, To a man whose friends probably died for their fathers... [Bridge: DJ Debris] "Taking a train, taking a train" "I-I- I head toward the train-tra-train station" "Riding the caboose to hell" "W-W- We're from a city heroin loves, the devil's in charge" [Chorus: Pressure] Whatever it takes can justify, Whatever ends we make , whatever the price. To the end of a life, it's just an observation, So take a ride we' stopping all stations. [Verse 2: Pressure] It's been a long night the suns lifting on a cold, Morning but she's drugged and drunk tripping on her stroll. On the way home, she's done stripping on a pole, But she can't pay for her son living on the dole. Jumps a train puts on her gloves she's wearing black, Being watched by some old mug she's glaring back. She's on edge and got the bug from sharing smack, So she says, "Hey, what the fuck you staring at?" He smiles, an unsteady hand rubs on his dome, She takes a seat, a messy band of ruffs board alone. To the digger with a machete at his lungs and he's prone, He can barely stand but ready to stand up for his own. She tries to help him she doesn't choose to flee the car, And catches a blow with enough bruise to leave a scar. She starts faintin', the rooms movin' and seein' stars Ain't it amazin' how courageous human beings are? [Bridge: DJ Debris] "Taking a train, taking a train" "I-I- I head toward the train-tra-train station" "Riding the caboose to hell" "W-W- We're from a city heroin loves, the devil's in charge" [Chorus: Pressure] Whatever it takes can justify, Whatever ends we make , whatever the price. To the end of a life, it's just an observation, So take a ride we' stopping all stations. [Verse 3: Pressure] He knows nothin' but toil, strife and hard yakka, Pissed at the world for playing wife in a slammer. This man was never given a life or damn platter, So he jumps a train with knife and bandanna. Boys at his back, sleazy, hardened and far, From givin' a fuck, an easy target his mark. Sees an old man and says "See we'll part with your hard, Earned cash or rest in peace we can start with your heart?" Some girl steps not afraid she's gonna cop it sweet, And gets decked before she made it even on her feet. The old man leaped to her aid and to his horror he'd, Thrusted his chest into the blade of his robber's piece. He grabbed the wallet, dropped the knife as he fled the car, Concerned about the loss of life he'd never went this far. What's done is done, he'd got the prize and he'd spent his half, Of two dollars in change and a pension card... [Outro] So take a ride, 'cause we' stoppin' all stations...

RESTRUNG. Is a must. And then I’d insist on listening to “THE THIRST” all parts. It’s a great story

I am pretty sure this is based around Noarlunga train station. I grew up in Hackham and it was rough. These boys are south Adelaide crew. Them and the Funkoars are telling the tales of down south in the 90's.

a digger is an Australian soldier. we call them diggers because in ww1 and ww2 a lot of our soldiers were from the gold fields, and obviously trench warefare, we also call them anzacs (australia new zealand army corps) and our remembrance day is called anzac day. you will hear the word digger in a lot of aussie music referring to the word soldier or warrior

The instrumental versions of their CD's are amazing and one's im precious about keeping safe. If you get a chance, check out Gingerbread man by Tenth Dan. I have no idea if he's still making tunes but that one is a definite banger that i still blast while driving.
