Another great one! I remember renting Mischief Makers from Blockbuster but I didn't play much of it. Mystical Ninja I loved!! It was another rental for me but I got it a lot and eventually I bought my own copy years later. It's probably my favorite N64 platformer besides CBFD, Banjo Kazooie, and Gex 3. Also HOLY MOLY I loved Space Station Silicon Valley! I had so much fun with it as a kid and it was the earliest game I got for my N64 collection. It struggles to work sometimes but it still plays which is the important thing. I'd love a remake or even just a re-release on Switch or something. Custom Robo I mainly played the GameCube version of but with that fan translation I ended up getting a copy for myself and having some fun! Still need to finish it. Quest 64 was my first real RPG and I didn't like it. Couldn't figure out combat. I was a kid at the time so maybe if I played it now I'd understand. Sin and Punishment I played at a friend's house on the Wii. Was short but a nice way to kill some time.

My two choices: Jet Force Gemini (Rare): A surprisingly fun romp. Yes, the fact you have to 100% it makes it drag a bit, the Floyd missions can be a PITA, but the gunplay is surprisingly solid. Body Harvest (DMA Design): Is this game good? Debatable. But you see the beginnings of much greater things; DMA Design would soon rebrand to a more well-known name: Rockstar North.

Such a great list, i played about 80% of them and they are all fantastic in their own right. I truly miss the uniqueness some of these titles had, back when developers didn't have much examples to base their games on in the beginning of the 3D age, they had to work with the tools and ideas they had and make the best of it and the flavors of some games just can't be reproduced today.

Hybrid Heaven was not only one of the few rpgs of the system, but it was truly unique. The scifi atmosphere isn't something totally fresh of course, but the tone and feel of the game is so strange, dark, cold, sometimes surreal. The story is engaging and has several plot twists, gradually finding yourself in the middle of a cosmic conspiracy leading to an alien invasion. I loved it back in the day and I think it's truly criminally underrated.
@tylermabry6881 Жыл бұрын
As far as Quest 64 is concerned, one other game used a very similar combat system, but added in graphics and story. Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage. Give it a go if you like the idea of quest but would enjoy much more depth to the story and characters, party composition similar to Shining Force, and more involved gameplay mechanics. Has a pen and paper DnD vibe to it.

If they remake Quest 64 today, then It'd be called Dark Souls lol Also my must shill pick for this video, When it comes to this 3D era shift console. Is definitely *Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth* . A Shmup I genuinely gave more play time than all my Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time replays. The game had all the tools to create a very satisfying and addicting experience. I think overall it's a great starting point for anyone trying to get into this difficult genre. Currently getting Switch ports of some of the more cult classic and difficult titles made by Cave. Shmups much like 2D Metroidvania tend to always age well from my experience.

Sin and Punishment is a goose egg sized diamond of a game. It's the stuff of legend. That game has you flying around in the sky on a telekinetically controlled piece of scrap metal ripped from a battleship while proceeding to destroy an entire fleet by shooting at it with your handgun and deflecting missiles back at it with said handgun which doubles as a lazer-sword. And while the game is shredding a meanderingly fitting fusion-rock it pushes forward a so increasingly convoluted story, you end up fighting as a mutant colossus standing towering on planet earth, shooting an onslaught of nuclear warheads, tornadoes and meteorites back at the final boss planet that fires them at you. These are only some of the highlights. It's a perfect blend of impressively stylized 5th generation graphics, expertly crafted and demanding gameplay, awesome and over-the-top set pieces, heckish replayability, finely aged cheese-y soundtrack, and a heavy dose of that wonderful arcade feel. It's dated in the best way possible. It's the greatest rail shooting game. It's so obviously the best, I won't even bother to argue about it. I won't.

Quest 64 is definitely better than most people give it credit for. Mind you it's not exactly an amazing RPG especially compared to other more well-known titles, but there are FAR worse games out there. Quest 64 is certainly worth a playthrough if you have an N64.
@TrevinAdams2 жыл бұрын
@@SkyScourgeGod Quest 64 was definitely an interesting experience when it came out. There weren't many, if any, JRPGs with the immersive world that Quest had from a graphical standpoint. The battle system and magic leveling system were also interesting, despite the simplicity of the overall mechanics compared to other games in the genre. That said, I'd be very curious to hear how someone who didn't grow up with an N64 felt about it playing it today.
@SkyScourgeGod2 жыл бұрын
@@TrevinAdams I'm pretty sure a person in that kind of scenario would have nothing but complaints about Quest 64 or even any N64 game in general. The N64 isn't as loved by the retro community as it should be since most people tend to complain about how badly the console has aged. That's honestly a real shame because the N64 is an awesome console even if you take off the nostalgia glasses. These days you have to appreciate the N64 for what it is instead of comparing it to everything else like a lot of people tend to do. 😟

Great video as always! I have a love/hate relationship with Quest 64. On one hand I love it because my mom gifted it to me before I had Zelda OoT and I played it with my brother so it brings a lot of nostalgia. But on the other hand, I tried playing it recently and seriously the insane amount of random battles is too much. There is a "fire" level where you have to cross a tunnel and there´s like 30 battles in a row. It gets annoying and too difficult really quick

To be honest, you could probably put any decent N64 game that wasn't made by Nintendo or Rare on this list; when people think of N64, they to think of those two companies' game output more exclusively. As for your first comment regarding fighting games on the N64, I've actually discovered that there are quite a few fighters on the N64. Some of them of questionable quality, but plenty of fighters for sure. 2:09 - Happy to say I do own Mischief Makers now. Funny enough, almost everyone of these underrated/obscure N64 game videos I see end up mentioning Mischief Makers. 4:01 - Funny enough, Beetle Adventure Racing is the other N64 game I often see pop up in these types of videos, but I'm not managed to stumble upon it. 7:27 - Yeah... Hybrid Heaven is a weird one. I've never played it myself but I remember watching my eldest brother play it and child me could barely comprehend what was going on with it's story. 8:42 - Ah, Mystical Ninja Goemon... easily one of my favourite N64 games. I'd say it's bigger flaw though is needing an N64 memory card. Those things were never easy to get a hold of back in the day and are even harder to find now. With both Custom Robo and Sin & Punishment on here, it interesting to see a couple Japanese exclusive games in this video. Do their cartridges have English language options?
