In short. Use quality oil and stick to the maintenace schedule. Poor lube inside and engine put extra stress on the chain to move all the move able parts. Thanks man

Use to think timing chain was good for life of engine. Probably true for old OHC V8, V6. Most overhead cam engines use long chains where chain stretch less tolerated; plastic chain guides and chain tensioner are maintenance items. Maybe timing belts with 100K changes are not so bad, they are quiet. Hi end motor cycles now use HD drive belt instead of chain.

Cloyes timing chains are garbage. My wife called me today and said her 2013 F-150 EcoBoost quit running while it was sitting there idling in the driveway. I went out and took a look at it, the engine cranked but had no compression. Pulled the valve covers off and found the primary timing chain missing on the driver bank and off the sprocket on the passenger bank. I was able to pull the chain out of the engine through the top because it was broken. One of the links had failed and upon further inspection, I found about half the links had a very concerning amount of play in them, and the other half were tight. I just replaced all the timing components on this engine 16 months / 10,000 miles ago, along with a Melling high volume oil pump. The chain showed no signs of lack of lubrication or damage from a foreign object. That engine ran beautifully and now it is ruined. And of course, Cloyes will not cover the cost of any parts or repairs other than the cost of their garbage chain. I will never, ever buy another Cloyes product.

Well! very nice. Your review is good to read. it sucks for your girl's car. I don't think all of them are bad? And what if they wont't cover your cost. I won't stick them to the wall like that. It's Okay to be pist off and BE NICE... But HEY what do I know. I will just keep it moving. Take Care.

The inverted link chain may be quieter and may look stronger, but the Cloyes True-Roller timing chain is definitely stronger, more reliable and resistant to stretching. I have used both types of timing chain sets in my engines. I have experienced flat-tappet camshaft failures in engines with both designs (the ultimate stressor of a timing chain). The inverted link chain stretched an unbelievable amount (due to the oil pump churning up bits of cam and lifter debris. In both instances, the oil pump housing was "Blue" from the increased drag from the metal ingestion. In the engine with the Cloyes True-Roller timing chain set, the chain did not stretch at all and was still useable. One aspect of the design that is apparent to me is the self-cleaning nature of the roller chain (open areas between the links and centrifugal force allows debris to escape) versus the inverted link chain's tendency to trap debris between the chain and the sprockets, leading to quicker unnecessary wear.

I’ve had the chains and tensioner replaced on my wife’s terrain ecotec 2.4 with a rattle on decel at 1800 rpm, but the noise is still there, if not worse on accel now, should I try another oil change ,and should I use an additive such as stp, or Lucas ? I’m a mechanic myself, but have just had a knee replacement and had a shop I trust do the work ,which was diagnosed by the gm dealer ?my shop guy seems to think he hears the noise lower in number 4 cylinder , which could indicate a rod or possible torque converter /flywheel failure or looseness, any suggestions please ? My wife has the same car with the same issue. They have 2 chains, one is a timing chain and the other one (can’t think of the damn name, i think its called the balance chain?? Idk its really not jogging my memory right now) but that smaller 2 secondary chain seems to be the cause of the rattles. Was that chain and guides also replaced? If not id bet thats your issue. Old soul millennial has a video of just this issue on his wifes 2.4l terrain

there is no such condition as chain stretch - chain wear - yes
@riblets1968

That's true in the strict sense as it would take many times more pulling force to literally stretch a tempered steel chain than the engine is capable of exerting. In the metaphoric sense though, it does make sense to refer to a timing chain's elongation as "stretch." Of course, this is just all semantics. I'm just a nerd, so never mind everything I just said. This is just my roundabout way to acknowledge what you wrote and of course you're quite correct.

@@riblets1968 You wouldn’t happen to know how and why timing chain tensioners and runners have a curve? I often wonder this since it seems to me this curve would create huge forces on the tensioner itself and cause more drag. My thought is that a floating cog or sprocket could make up the tension. Obviously I know my idea isn’t ideal but I just don’t know why, thanks.

Also if you have a lead foot.i had a friend who would put the pedal to the floor every time he Went to work in the morning since he took the interstate he would floor the Cadillac STS until he got up to 75 miles an hour this was not good so in the 3 years he had the car l put in three timing chains I told him this is not good for his car but he would say he had to blow out the carbon every morning well he blew out the timing chain three times in 3 years that Cadillac STS is not made for running like he had it going so now the car sits in his yard backfiring engine missing and it just doesn't run it will start but it runs so rough you can't even put it on the street cuz it won't pick up speed anymore so remember if you have a lead foot you're going to be putting in time and change a lot.

@Joby Fluorine I don't care who put it in it could be a Daytona 500 race car mechanic building engines to do all kinds of stuff this guy would tear the timing chain out of anything every single time he got behind the wheel it was to the floor to the floor to the floor he just doesn't understand you ruin motors like that I'm a mechanic for 55 years and I have never seen anybody do s*** like this so if you think it's the mechanics fault well you're just an a****** too

There are 2 really bad really suspicious reviews about cloyes timing chains on advanced auto for the 2016 gmc terrain that really turn me off about using this brand. In both those reviews they had catastrophic failure less than 10k miles after timing chain job🤦‍♂️ so now what??

The GM HFV6 engine is known for timing system issues, most of which are a result of poor oil system health or oil consumption issues. You must determine the reason why the timing system needs replacement and make sure that a new system will fix the root cause of a failure. A new timing system that isn't receiving sufficient oil supply/pressure is going to fail in a short amount of time.

What about pre-oiling the engine before start up? Hold throttle down on modern car turn key for a few seconds and then let off gas. Engine will then fire and pre-lubing is done.

The quality of the chain material used in the chain itself is a major factor as well, not all chains are created equally. cheap materials used in the chain like chains that are made overseas in an Asian country are well,... cheap ! made of poor quality and thus will not last as long. You get what you pay for.

OHV = OHC: correction

Technically all over head cam engines are over head valve. However, people often refer to pushrod engines as over head valves, because at the time, it was unique to have valves over the head. When you said OHV, you knew that it was a pushrod. Nowadays the naming is a little more complicated.

Not everyone has the money to buy a new or used EV. Nor is in a situation where owning a EV vehicle is actually beneficial compared to gas. There is only one slow charging station within 30 minutes of my house. The closest is fast charger 45 plus minutes away .. Electric won't be the "shit" for a long , long time yet. There just isn't the infrastructure for it in most states. Cool technology, but when cool technology breaks or is used in poor situations, it sucks.
