I'm a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt at an MMA and competition Jiu-Jitsu School. You should absolutely never hold guard in the street. Also, due to the fact that Jiu-Jitsu is in fact a business, the belt system in its entirety is very subjective and there is a lot of marketing involved great video coach!

As a 12 year, Bjj Brown belt, Master Army combatives instructor who has trained in MMA kickboxing, etc. I have to wholeheartedly agree with this 💯. I think most of us should forget why we actually started in martial arts and that was to learn how to fight!! The tournaments was just a “legal” way of fighting without getting into trouble if you know what I mean.

Professor you are 💯 SPOT ON. People have become brainwashed, being taught strategies and techniques that will get them killed on the streets and in a real life self defence situation.. what frustrates me, Is that you get these people who train for a few years in Bjj then start “teaching” techniques on social media platforms with no real world experience in street defence.. For me it has become a JOKE.. Thank you for posting this.. I hope more people take heed..

Saw BJJ's limitations years ago when I watched wrestlers neutralize BJJ's takedown attempts in mma and smash them from the top position or use their sprawling skills to keep the fight on the feet. BJJ is only one part of the martial arts world and it's fans need to understand that.

I agree for the most but I would have to say purple belt. Yes I get blue belt is where you really learn most of the functional moves but I think purple is where you really put it together. Unfortunately you’re right BJJ has been ruined by making it more of a sport when it’s designed to be a self defense system. I just wish I could find a school that focuses more on self defense than tournaments.

@thelinealchamp9027: Off the top of my head: 1) The "Gracie measure stance" used to judge distance is good. 2) drilling entries into body locks that can be used to fold the body and trip if needed 3) Lapel chokes (Be careful, you can kill someone or they can suffer irreversible brain damage if put to sleep for long) 4) TRANSITIONS FROM ONE POSITION TO THE OTHER (FROM BOTTOM TO TOP) while being punched (put gloves on a buddy, wife or big enough child to practice). Note: GRAPPLING SHOULD NOT BE THE DEFAULT. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GRAPPLING FOR IF YOU INDULGE.

This is pure facts, on the point you made in the beginning about your height, i think the ego struggle most of these people have is that their gyms are actually decent about drilling in the idea of humility in the streets(to a degree, obviously it becomes unsuccessful as they progress), but this keeps them in controlled environments practicing bjj. I say this because as a boy i took quite a bit of tkd and that was what i was repeastedly told in classes(truthfully, what everyone should be told, which is to avoid fighting) however when life erupted and i was faced with year after year of necessary violence, i found it was impossible to utilize tkd and i believe it would be similar with many bjj practitioners. I hope that ramble made at least a bit of since. Thank you for your time and opinions!

I agree with you! I love BJJ, I am a brown belt but I have to say that American normie culture and overemphasizing of competition vs self defense ruins jujitsu as a self defense discipline! I now realize the I am not a complete grappler and I don't fault my instructor for it but the culture of the sport overall! Even before starting jujitsu I wanted to practice judo but I decided to get a bjj brown or black belt first because it was harder and longer time wise! I still cross trained with judokas and wrestlers from time to time! However I observed the my stand up and takedown gave is lacking! I want to pursue a second degree in martial arts this time in judo and to black belt level! I am more of a guard passer than a guard puller in bjj but even I pull guard too often! This is not a good habit to have in a self defense scenario! Once again I love bjj but the criticism you laid out in this video is very much constructive and your points are valid! Jujitsu guys lake to kiss 💋 each other's asses and pretend the bjj is the best self defense martial art in the world! It's very much like a cult! We bjj guys need to do some introspection, we need a reality check and a dose of healthy self criticism!

This bjj blue belt named Kanna Asakura competes in MMA and grappling only contest and beats everyone with her wrestling. She's been learning western wrestling since she was a small child. Kanna pulls off submissions against people fine and she's not a brown or even a purple belt.

Why do we train, for medals and belts? Or, do we train for self defense? Point scored tournament based training will lose in tournaments to students who train for the streets. I've seen it often.

Never ever ever ever…..EVER pull guard in a combative situation. Guard is a survival transition position. Not a place to hang out and get smashed. You only go into guard if you have no other choice and when forced but you better get your ass up and out of it by sweep or escape. Attempt a sub if one is there but do not get smashed holding it. Throwing a sub is also a good way to get someone to fight hard out of it and use the opportunity to get space and get to your feet.

Greetings brother. I cannot disagree. Im not a professional fighter but i grew uo in the 80s through mid 90s at a time where fights were a weekly event throughout nyc. Sports martial arts and regular martial arts are 2 different animals. Pulling guard is dangerous. What I saw that worked on a regular basis before the ufc had its first match on vhs was the following: guillotine, rear naked chokes and arm bars with guard being used momentarily as a transitional move before sinking the hooks in which had to be done quickly. Besides that, boxing, wrestling, judo, a good understanding of kicks without the fancy stuff or an understanding of kickboxing. All of these mixed together. Everyone is built differently so the tools will not be effective for everyone. The belt system recommendations can be made in just about any art form. The midway point gives you the knowledge of what to do according to the situation. Youve been steady on your beliefs and havent wavered. You stand by your principles amd you should continue to do so. Those that disagree can do so and ifnthey get all emotional about it, they can go eat a 🤫
